Vaaler Creek Golf Club
About
Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Thumbs up
Fairways were in great shape. Greens were beautiful, but too slow. Tee boxes were in good shape, but the crowning is very unhelpful. The pro shop staff was great, and the starter was great! Overall, a good experience.
Amazing Experience
Had wanted to play this course since moving to San Antonio, but either didn’t want to travel that far or cost was an issue. They had 1 spot left for a 12:10 tee time at a great price so I bit.
I am kicking myself for waiting so long. Even given the extreme heat and the tough times other courses are having the conditions are superb! From checkin I was treated with a welcome and explanation of the course layout. Small bucket of balls was $3 on top of my $32 round. Unheard of for a course in such shape. The carts are new, GPS equipped and even stocked with towels. Ball washers and trash cans on every box. Water jugs all over as well. No bev cart, but a cooler on each cart if you buy drinks before the round.
The other 3 that booked never showed so I played alone. I caught up to one group of 4 on #8 and they waited on the next box to allow me through. Entire round was 2:30 long. I can’t say enough good things about my experience. Don’t waste your money at the other tracks in town. It was well worth the extra distance.
Hidden Gem
Great value. The layout is a little quirky at times, but fits in well with the terrain. Very well maintained even in drought conditions, greens roll true and was a bit challenging. Target golf, you have to hit irons off the tee and be in the right spots to be successful.
Will definitely play again.
JMG
Love this tract. Always good and challenging. Course is in great condition.
Playing thru
Course layout lacking. Too many irons off tee on par fours. Too much cart time between holes . Felt lost most of time due to road travel between holes. Had 8:30 tee time booked, arrived at first tee 8:20 as threesome was leaving box. Starter said there was a mistake because the group had 4 players not three and he would work me in somewhere. I said it looks like one of the carts had a ride along because only one set of clubs on cart. Starter said wait on box and he would go check. Sure enough one was a rider only and he said tee off and join the group. Awkward way to start the round to say the least. If I book an 8:30 time a week in advance, check in at 8:00 arrive at first tee 8:20 and this occurs there must be communication problem between pro shop and starter.
Fun Course
Really fun track. Overall fairly short, but enough hazards to get your attention. Greens were fun with a ton of undulation. You need to know where to leave your approach shots.
One suggestion if you are playing for the first time. The driving range and first tee are not close to the clubhouse and directional signage is lacking, so be sure you inquire where things are. Unfortunately, even if you have a general idea of where you think you are headed, there needs to be more signage.
Now that we know the ropes, we will definately be back!
Great course near Austin
Tough course, but beautiful scenery, well maintained with kind and welcoming Texas players. Really enjoyed the course, even with bad result. Will come back with my own clubs.
Nice place
Nice course. Fairly tough. Good value with GolfNow
Pleasant Day
Vaaler Creek's two nines were built at different times and appear to have been designed two by different designers. The front is tighter. The back is more expansive. Both sides feature a nice variety of holes. The course conditions were very good, with lush fairways, good bunkering and healthy greens that held well-struck shots and were moderately fast and true. The staff was pleasant and professional. The carts were new and had plenty of juice. Concession prices were reasonable. What more can a golfer ask?
Hard to pass up
Vaaler golf course is a nice little gem outside of Banco. It has a little bit of everything. It has some challenging holes, very good quick greens, and some open holes as well. I’m looking forward to playing it again soon.
