Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

the only negative I have is "the rough does not need to be US Open Caliber. The pace of play and on-course frustration is effected when a player constantly loses balls that are off line be a very small margin, resulting in Balls being lost that missed a fairway be 10 feet. I know,, if we don't like losing balls, hit em the fairway. That is a fair statement, but the rough is way to penalizing and "is unfair" in of itself. Other than the rough being too deep and thick, the course is really nice.

Vaaler Creek

I enjoyed the layout of the course. Hole # 1 is drivable especially down wind.

The overall conditions are good. The fairways have a nice covering and the ball sits up. The rough is dormant now so easier to get good contact. I found that I hit 3 woods and hybrids on many tee shots from blue tees. I like that a few par 5s are reachable in 2 with the correct angle with a well placed tee shot. I found the par 3s to be challenging. The #9 green slopes severely to the front of the green and Birdies or Pars are much easier from the correct position on tee shot. Super fun #18 finishing hole! It’s a blind (trees) tee shot with a forced water carry (220-240) to the flat landing area for a much shorter approach to the green. Great grass range and practice area. The pace was 3.5 hours on a windy day so that was a big plus! FYI - the greens roll nice however they are slower than they look! Great course overall!

Great Track

Love the layout. Not a long course but a premium on shot selection. I have played it multiple times but this was the first time I’ve played it with a lot of wind. Quite challenging

First Visit

My husband and I were on vacation in San Antonio and decided to drive up to Vaaler Creek near Blanco for a round. The course was in good condition, considering the dry winter. The course layout was comfortably challenging with the water crossings being the prime enemy to a good round. Greens were smooth and moderately fast. Amenities like lunch seemed to be lacking, possibly due to it being a winter Monday, That was not a big issue for us. Would play this course again if we return to the area.

Always Good

We always like to play here. The conditions have always been good. The one thing that is frustrating is the tee boxes. They have no colors to identify the tee boxes so you always have to count from the back tee box what box you are on. Probably not an issue for those who play here every day. Not sure why they can’t dab a bit of blue or white or red paint on the appropriate rocks.

No longer the gem it was

Used to come here and could play in 3 hours tops. Now it seems the secret is out. Course was in great shape for winter and staff was friendly. I might come back if I can figure out when to shorten the round from 5 hours on a wends.
