Conveniently located near downtown San Antonio not too far from Austin, Vaaler Creek Golf Club has a memorable layout of gently rolling hills dotted with creeks, ponds and lakes. The course begins with a challenging front nine and then eases up a bit on the back nine, but overall it is a formidable test. The greens are tricky and demanding, especially on the front nine where there are some severe slopes and undulations. The back nine greens are a bit flatter but they still require careful attention. The rolling, contoured fairways are lined with trees and there are deep bunkers strategically guarding the greens, but luckily there are only seventeen of them. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are also several doglegs and blind shots if there wasn’t enough to keep you on your toes.

Great experience

Due to county water restrictions, course has been cart path only for nine months or so, but because of that the fairways were spectacular! The greens were perfect and their usual challenging self. Bunkers were good. Almost all tee boxes were in great shape. We played behind a painfully slow group, so had to wait to hit all of our shots - and only had the group behind hit into us only once😐. All in all, a great golf experience despite the cart path only.

Blanco

Recently in San Antonio for a golf trip. Three of us played seven courses and Vaaler was in my top two favorites. Conditions for February were really good in my opinion. Surprises me when people complain about winter golf conditions as it makes me wonder what their expectations are! Grass is dormant of course, but we really liked the course and loved the layout. Many interesting holes and fun, undulating greens. It’s set in a residential area and you have to drive the cart quite a distance to reach the driving range, so be very careful as lots of cars and pickups are sharing the road. Staff was friendly, but I was disappointed that when we said we needed some practice ball’s the guy in the pro shop offered us three individual baskets instead of the better priced large bucket to share, but I should have asked him about the prices. I recommend this course and would definitely play it again.

Course is in great shape

It's been hot and pretty dry in Austin, but the course was in great shape. Tee boxes for par 3's in particular were a bit beaten up but the fairways and greens were in really good condition. Starter was helpful with pulling together a couple of singles and a two-some to help prevent some backups on the course.

I played on a hot deal, so the bang for the buck was great! Just wish I saw the drink cart on the course more than once.
