ShadowGlen Golf Club
About
Located just 15 minutes northeast of downtown Austin, ShadowGlen Golf Course is considered by locals to be one of the area's hidden gems. At 7,174 yards from the back tees, it is a long, tough course that will test even the most seasoned players. Some consider it to be the most difficult public golf course in Texas. The layout has a links design that is mostly flat but there are a few hilly spots that can cause some trouble, especially the holes that were designed with steep drops. The narrow fairways require accuracy and the well manicured greens play fast and are often bordered by strategically placed bunkers or contoured mounding. There are also water hazards coming into play throughout, including the wandering creek that cuts across the golf course.

Fun course for all levels
The course had a good pace of play and it was a great layout with some fun holes. I played the tips and my wife played the whites. We were able to “play together” because of the large difference in tee box lengths. Most of the tee boxes need work and the greens were a bit fluffy. Also there are quite a few weeds growing in the course/fairway, but there was a worker spraying the weeds as we played. I think they were letting the greens grow in after aeration. It was my first time playing this course. It seemed like a long course with quite a few longer par 4s. There were iguanas and other wildlife throughout the course. The squirrels are eating well and living their best life. There were a few blind greens which was nice and overall the bunkers were in decent shape. There was no cart service and food in the clubhouse was sparse. You had a typical choice of hamburger and hotdog that were already cooked and sitting in a food warmer. There was also no marshal, so I could see how pace of play could be affected, but we have a single play through and it was all working out well. I got a good hot deal price and for that it was worth the money. Lots of fun.
Greens condition
It would have been nice to know ahead of time that the greens where aerated and near impossible to have a smooth straight putt.
Decent course, too many people
The course was overall decent but greens were super slow. Definitely not worth the price we paid. Also course was way overbooked. We didn’t even get to finish because it took so long and as we drove past the other holes when leaving there were groups on the tee box, fairway, and green of every hole.
What time was your tee time?
We did have about a 5-10 minute delay off the first tee, however every group that teed off in the morning made the turn in 2:15 or less, and we only did 75 rounds after 1PM so we weren't even close to being fully booked.
Good value for the money
Good conditions, great pace of play. Awful smell the entire front 9
Challenging course, yet rewarding
Had a good time playing course. First time. Friendly staff. Nice layout. Convenient driving range and putting green. Since carts don’t have screens and course yardage markers were hard to find, was impossible to know distance and layout (water, bunkers, OB, etc. Have a better idea for next time, but would have been helpful to have info provided.
Dear teretejana,
We are glad that you enjoyed your first time out here. We realize that the course can be difficult to navigate for first timers, but we are working on a solution to this... Hope to see you out again soon
Nice course
Nice layout and it's in good condition. Not sure why so many bad reviews lately. A few t boxes need more time for the grass to fill up but not a big deal since you hit off the t anyways. All 4 of us enjoyed the round.
Dear huynguyen1, thank you for your review. We are glad that you enjoyed the course, and we appreciate you understanding that the condition of the tee boxes is only temporary. Hope to see you back again soon!
Good Layout
Greens are a little bumpy. Tee Boxes are bad. Great Layout though.
Great value
Course in good shape. Lots of variety in length and look. Several tees to accommodate various skill levels.
Great quality for the price!
ShadowGlen is a great course if you're looking for something on the east side of Austin. The staff does a great job keeping the course well maintained and it has a really nice layout, especially for the price.
Thanks for your great review. We appreciate your honest feedback and hope to see you out again soon!
Niiiice
Amazing what they've done with the place. I've always loved the layout but now that the course is in great condition, and they've made a lot of other improvements as well its a regular in my groups rotation
Word of advice: book as far in advance as possible. Its mid afternoon on Monday and they are already booked up until 11AM on Saturday
Dear BIGRANDYXXL,
Thanks for your review, and for noticing all of the improvements that we have made. And yes, weekend morning do fill up absurdly fast, but even if we're full early in the week and you can't find a tee time, give us a call; because we do get groups that cancel
Too slow
No Marshall to be found all day on a Saturday. Teed off with an open hole in front of us. By 6, 3 groups on every hole, long waits between shots. Not fun.
Fun, but kicked my butt
This course was definitely more of a challenge than I expected teeing off the first hole. Moisture on the grass and greens for the first few holes made it more difficult. The rough is moderately tall grass, but it was irons only getting out of it. Shot placement is very important on this course with all of the water, OB, and a few long shots to reach the fairway off the tee.
The tee boxes were pretty terrible across the course, with one barely having any grass at all. Other than that, the course was in pretty good shape maintenance-wise.
u314161805215, due to the strange weather we have had this year, the winter ryegrass died out almost overnight, before the bermuda could grow in. The teeboxes look the way they do because we are significantly increasing the size of them so that in the future there is never any shortage of grass to tee off from
Not worth $48 fee
We had an inkling of the bad conditions on the first tee. Whew. What a cow pasture it was. I’m sorry but I’ve never had a worse experience paying $45 plus tax for a round. They should warn players beforehand that the tee boxes do not have grass, there’s mud and a lot of bare spots on the fairway, and a lot of bald spots on the green. If the green fee was $25 and below, I would’ve been more forgiving.
If they really took care of the grass - tee box, fairway and edges of the greens this would be a great track
Excellent
What can I say, the course speaks for itself. Great layout, beautiful views: even Giordano liked it. Staff was professional and courteous, a huge plus
$80 green fee for what?
Every tee box was a mud puddle, casual water on every hole. I kept wondering why I paid $80 to play this course. Never coming back.
Solid track
Really nice course, honestly had no idea this place existed. Great twilight rates too, well worth the slightly longer drive out when the greens roll this well. Tough but fair. We had group hit into us on back 9 which was annoying because they never asked to play through but we saw them after the round loading their clubs into a Dodge charger so can’t be too surprised at their antics.
Dear ATX30under30, thank you for your great review, we are glad you enjoyed the course and managed to stay safe from the group behind you's ball. Come back again soon, and if anyone ever hits into you again, call the pro shop and we'll be happy to run that person off
Dear Omar9594065,
Who did you book through? There is an aerification alert that pops up when booking through either our website or GolfNow, and we currently have 8 signs up in the clubhouse informing golfers of recent aerification and the discounted rates for this week.
We are sorry that you were not notified, and we hope you give us another shot in a few weeks when the course has recovered
