Purgatory Golf Club
About
Spread across 218 acres, the Ron Kern-designed Purgatory Golf Club is the longest par-72 course east of the Mississippi River. Nevertheless, the course is set up to be enjoyed by all, with six different sets of tees ranging from more than 7,700 yards all the way down to just under 4,600 yards. Bunkering is one of the club's defining features, with more than 130 coming into play. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the par-3 17th, where eight massive bunkers almost completely surround the putting surface.

Par 3, 17th Hole Photo submitted by TravisCedzidlo19 on 10/09/2014
Beautiful challenge
Loved the staff friendliness. Had 4 guys looking for a shirt to bring home. I had to have that logo, too cool. Greens are so true and cruel at the same time. What a challenge and a blast. Bloody mary fantastics don't skip the 27 ingredient purgatory has to offer. Themed golf shop was really pretty.
Purgatory
This course is a great facility. It was in great condition. A fun and challenging course.
enjoyable
If you fear bunkers, traps, and fescue this is not for you. The layout is great and very challenging. The course condition was a little lacking, tee to green there were some areas that needed love. The par threes were a very nice mix of yardage and design. Many of the holes offer a very links style feel. On the backnine a member drove around us and teed off on the next hole, we then had to wait on him thru the entire backnine. All in all, I found Purgatory very enjoyable.
In the end, it's too tricked out
Got a great rate, played after work, had the course to ourselves, which is always wonderful. Tees, fairways, first cut of rough & greens were all good. I'd say greens were very fair, if large and pretty undulating. 2million bunkers, most of which were in great shape. By most accounts (and if reviews are any indication) this is regarded as one of Indiana's best. I haven't played here in a while, and most of those previous rounds were before I got better at the game. Having made it out today, I was excited to give the course a shot. We ended up getting a 2 club wind and our touch screen GPS unit never worked right (no distance feature).
Here's my thoughts: the course has a few memorable holes (I like #1, 2, a few others) but after about 5-6 holes they all look the same: Tee box points you out to an expanse of bunkers & mounds. There are very few items to gauge distance, pick good sight lines, or see your landing area. I couldn't really use my laser to help off the tee. Because they all look the same, I couldn't remember where to aim from earlier visits. It becomes evident that only those players who get out here frequently are going to know where you should be setting up your shots. All of this effort to make the course "hard" has really just created the same problems, over & over: you flew over the wrong edge of a mound/bunker and guess what...you ended up in a bunker (or a mess of weedy fescue that's sparsely on the mounds). Architecturally it's kinda boring. I get the target-golf idea, believe me. But after 18 holes of always guessing where to frikn aim or where your ball is, I just wanted some fair golf holes.
Maybe the GPS would have helped (or maybe a few more trips would), I'm not sure. I think it's just "hard for hard's sake" and lacks the overall charms of some other courses in the area (I find The Fort G.C. to usually be my favorite year in & out). I would definitely recommend the course to others, but I would prep the uninitiated to be prepared for a barrage of bad breaks posing as course design.
Great course
Challenging links course... pace of play was exceptional.
Beautiful Day
First time playing here, great challenge but fair . Really enjoyed the course would play again many times .
Late Sunday Round
Great day. Weather perfect and course in great shape. Grounds crew has done a marvelous job with this course. Greens were impeccable, fairways in great shape. Rough a little rough because it is still a little patchy, but that is the character of this course. Worth the money at regular rate as well.
Great Option
Purgatory is a very playable golf course, seven sets of tees allow for play at various levels. Excellent condition, great pace of play, and views on the course are excellent. No houses, condo's or other distractions, surrounded by farms and horses.
The course has a large number of traps, but they don't all come into play and you can play out of the traps easily. Don't let that put you off. Greens are great, uniform and roll great. A great value and a great course.
This course is very challenging!
Challenging course, but very well maintained! Gets a lot of play so you may have groups in front and behind! Worth the drive!
One of the best in Indy
Love this course. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in excellent condition. The greens were the fastest I've played. Layout is very fun with many memorable holes. This one is worth the money even when paying peak-time fees. A must play.
Great time
I was healing an injury from work but enjoyed watching my son play from the farthest distance you could play I played the par 3 and short par 4 wished I could have played them all. Definitely a true test to your game.
Great Track
Purgatory remains one of my favorite courses I have ever played. I am a member right down the road at a higher rated course but never miss an opportunity to play @ Purgatory. Played on Easter which was a joy cause the course was near empty so I breezed around the course. The team at Purgatory has done some good things in the last several years to make the course more playable and take the conditions to the next level. Tee boxes were flat and greens were in great shape 2 of the things I really look for in a top notch track.
Purgatory The Great
This course is awesome!
It fits all handicaps and golfing abilities.
Very friendly staff and an amazing clubhouse.
Not a course that can be overpowered.
Always a Fun Test
Great to get out in February again. Course is is decent shape, and for the off-season price right now it's certainly worth a go. Greens will need a little healing come spring time before paying full freight in-season costs.
The wind always blows here, and this is a course where many holes you just go for par and gladly move on. But it can be had if you are on your game as well. Greens are not fast right now, but come summer season they are some of, if not the toughest around. If you also avoid the sand, you probably had a good round.
Great course and staff
The greens were recently aerated but course was still in excellent shape. golf course staff members were very nice and effiencient.
Purgatory from red tees
Nice layout, very good condition, tough greens!
As a twosome we played very fast! Nice pro and accommodating !
