Purgatory Golf Club
About
Spread across 218 acres, the Ron Kern-designed Purgatory Golf Club is the longest par-72 course east of the Mississippi River. Nevertheless, the course is set up to be enjoyed by all, with six different sets of tees ranging from more than 7,700 yards all the way down to just under 4,600 yards. Bunkering is one of the club's defining features, with more than 130 coming into play. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the par-3 17th, where eight massive bunkers almost completely surround the putting surface.

Beautiful Day in Purgatory
Beautiful day with unseasonably warm weather for Indiana in October. Course was in very good shape with the exception of some of the sand traps. There was some maintenance going on but it did not affect play. This course is very fun and challenging but if you can stay out of the sand and rough it is very fair. Fairly easy to avoid the water on most holes. GPS in the carts is a nice feature for those who have never played the course before. Facility was great and the staff in the lounge and pro shop were excellent.
A must play
In great shape, greens smooth and quick. The whole course is beautiful
Not worth the trip
Drove 2 hours and spent 65.00 for nothing special. I know it rained hard the day before so many of the bunkers were full of water but the rest were hard asRock and the pin placements were at least two days old. And a little weed kilkiller would not hurt!
Great layout but needs attention
This is a great golf course and challenging but if you play from the correct tees for your ability it can be very playable. The course was in overall good condition but many of the bunkers were UNPLAYABLE, while others were excellent. And we did not see any people working on the bunkers that were bad. The greens were nice and fast but had tons of unrepaired ball marks and were bumpy. I believe it is the responsibility of the course management/employees to make it very clear to all golfers that they expect them to repair ball marks and divots and rake traps. But it is amazing that hardly anyone at most golf course ever mentions this when you check in, and rarely do you see reminders on the course. It is very discouraging to pay good money to play a nice course and have to contend with greens that are full of ball marks.
Great experience
We were in town for a baseball tournament and wanted to find a place to play. Purgatory came highly recommended from a few golf buddies. The staff was wonderful and golf course was challenging but fair. Loved it and can't wait to go next time we are back in the area.
BUNKERS
Great Course lots of Bunkers Links style layout
Me and my son and a Pal of mine really enjoyed it
Really enjoyed playing this Advanced course.... Played from the blacks which is roughly a little over 7200 yards.... Course Can be okay to score on if you put the ball in the right place ?. . As for the greens they were Putting about a 10 or a 11. . . Pin placements was kind of moderate.... As far as the course goes in shape I give it a 9 Green's I give it a 9 andFairways I give it a 9. . . We didn't have a Putt straight all day the greens had a lot of elevation changes to them ?. . . Purgatory has 128 bunkers there's a few holes that if you are not in the Fairway you were in a waste bunker ?. . . Number 17 is a hole surrounded by sand so it's kind of like an island green but instead of water they have 2 acres of Sand. . So all-in-all if you are looking to play a upgraded course I guess you could call Purgatory one of those courses. . . As for the faculty they were all very nice but I went down to the Range ball Overhead door and they were freshly out of range balls so they brought us a unlimited baskets for us to practice with and their practice facility is pretty nice , they have a driving range a chipping area and they have a practice Putting green which I thought was a little small they have a driving range , Chipping area and a practice Putting Green which I thought was a little small and is by no means what the Greens are on the 18-hole layout. . . . Good luck and make sure you hit it straight so you can navigate . .
Great course, SLOW play
Love this course. Such an awesome layout to find in the middle of Indiana. The tall grass was mowed way down this time playing it though and, while that made the course significantly easier (much appreciated), I missed the tall grass because that's how I remember the course and I personally feel that's a defining feature of Purgatory. All that being said, my 2some got stuck behind THE SLOWEST 3some I have EVER seen on any golf course. Each one of the 3 guys in the group ahead of us was playing from a different tee box on every hole and they spent 10+ minutes on every green lining each putt up like they were either playing for $100+ a hole or in the final round of the US Open. Considered calling the clubhouse to say something and we even considered leaving after 9 holes since it was so bad. This was very disappointing and honestly made our round considerably less enjoyable. Great course layout and very hard but can be just as fun. That is of course unless you get stuck behind a group like the one we unfortunately had to stand and watch for 5+ hours.
Great track
Green rolled true and quick but not overly fast. Helpful staff, friendly. Will play again. If your not in the fairway, your in for a long day. Not a track for a beginner.
Purgatory In Name Only
I often play this course. If you really want to challenge yourself you can make it long from the tips. Lots of tee boxes to fit any level golfer. Many of the fairways strategically place bunks more to help guide your aiming on this links style course. Lots of great holes with enough risk vs reward shots to keep you interested throughout.
Thank you for the great review. We appreciate the kind words.
Purgatory is a great description!
Enjoyed playing here! A great challenge that can test your game.
Love the course
The day I played it had rained for about seven days in a row . And the day I played, still the course was in excellent shape . I enjoy the course even when I play bad. Will play it several more times this summer
We appreciate the great rating, glad you enjoyed the course. Look forward to seeing you soon.
Purgatory
Great course layout, challenging with lots of sand traps
Only negative was the driving range was closed?
Glad you enjoyed the layout. Unfortunately the range does not dry out as fast as the course, just too much rain over the past few days.
I wish it were closer
Kudos to the club and staff!
I have played here several times over the years and it never disappoints. I have played here multiple times this spring and it appears to be in the best condition of the upper echelon courses in town.
The staff is glad you came and knowledgeable. The course requires all the shots and provides great shot value. The practice facilities are top notch. The greens are probably the best in town right now......ROLLING FAST AND TRUE.
Right now it is playing a little easier than when the prairie grass is up, which I can appreciate - There is enough resistance to scoring from the traps, water, wind, green speeds, etc. If I were to be critical, the one thing that could be vastly improved is the bunkering....... It is not consistent - extremely thin in places and thick in others. I try to avoid them anyway. :-) One of if not my favorites around town.
Best public play options around Indy:
1. Purgatory
2. Brickyard Crossing ( pricey )
3. The Fort
4. Prairie View ( WHEN it is in good shape )
5. Golf Club of IN ( underrated )
6. Fox Prairie ( underrated )
7. Bearslide
Great courses a good drive from town:
Kampen course at Purdue
Rock Hollow
Otter Creek
Harrison Hills
Mystic Hills
Thank you for your kinds words. We look forward to your next tee time.
Challenging, yet fun layout
This was my second time playing this course. The first time I didn't enjoy myself, as it was very difficult to find my ball many times, and I didn't know my way around. This round, being earlier in the year, the rough was shorter, and more enjoyable. I also played with someone that knew the course. The gps units on the carts weren't working. The course conditions were excellent and challenging.
Purgatory Always Delivers
Purgatory is a great course. Always in good condition and a challenge. No housing on the course and a pleasure to walk.
It's like playing the British Open
The wind was crazy and the greens are challenging with bunkers, well maintained, are everywhere. You must try the 17 ingredient Bloody Mary
Tom T
Several greens were Aerated and some of the traps seemed to be lacking sand, but overall the course was in pretty could shape for this time of year.
Classic golf architecture!
Gorgeous links-style layout with a number of traditionally-designed holes. There are six sets of tees that made it playable for all the players in our group. We loved spending time in the clubhouse, such a warm and relaxing environment! Food and drinks were great!
Very nice challenging course!
This was our first time playing this course. Loves the course and how challenging it was. On a nice day I bet it amazing however it was on in the mid 50s and horrible wind so we gave up a few hole into the back nine. Only downfall was a junior outting played earlier in the day and there were tons of divots on the greens that weren't repaired but greens were still nice despite that. Fairway and tee boxes are some of the best around. Would highly recommend this course and we will definitely be playing again in better weather!
hey pal sorry that was me my son and a great friend of mine that flew in from Arizona... And we was playing for a little money matter of fact we were playing $10 a hole and skins...apologize for that.... You could have said something and we don't let you go in front of us.... But there was a group in front of us that who was playing tight anyway... Just wanted to send you a shout and tell you that I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your round..... Maybe next time if we go at the same time I'll buy ya some range balls and cold beverages. . .
