Great pace, even for a holiday!
Staff was friendly but still kept the pace moving. Played a Sunday over Labor Day weekend and finished in 4 hours.. with a foursome! Great course, great layout, great conditions. One of my favorites in the area!
Not Worth It
This course used to be worth the drive in the St. Louis area. Not anymore. Fairways and tee boxes are in horrible shape. Multiple times in our round we moved to a different tee marker because the tee box was all dirt. Fairways aren’t much better. You better pick your spots accurately because you’re ball has a good chance ending up in grown out clover or weeds.
Greens roll fine for the most part but are always soft and slow. Divots are all over so good luck dodging those.
Pace of play wasn’t great but that’s expected on a Saturday afternoon round. (5 hour round)
$55. Might as well buck up and pay for some of the really good courses in the area that are better in every area mentioned above.
Sad to see this place get to where it is. Truly enjoyed this place for a long time. Won’t be back any time soon.
This Course Has Really Slipped
I last played Aberdeen in August 2019. In about 2 years, the course is going in the wrong direction.
Let's first talk about the good things the course has to offer. It's a short list - just the greens and the bunkers. The bunkers were nicely raked.
Let's start talkng about all the issues with the course:
The tees are in rough shape. The fairways have been overtaken by patches of clover in the zoysia fairways. Some of the fairways had sections which had limited grass (hole 17). Some of the grass bunkers had an assortment of weeds, clover and high patches of green grass. The pace of play was awful. Waited 5-10 minutes on each tee. Again, no course ranger to correct this.
A couple of other notes. There is no dress code. I saw jeans and gym shorts being worn. The cart paths are really in bad shape too. The other unusual thing was when you folded over the back nine scorecard, the lines do not line up with the front nine. There is no water on the course due to Covid. Therefore, they need to have a beverage cart on the course on warm days.
For the condition of this course, the green fees of $67 is grossly too high. You can play the #1 course in the St. Louis Metro area (Annbriar) for $70.
Wide open but watch out for shots from other holes
The course was in excellent shape. The fairways were good and especially the greens were rolling true. The greens were quite soft, probably due to water being poured on them, and one of my playing partners hit a really high pitching wedge that plugged all the way below the putting surface. A lot of marks that were not completely fixed but balls still putted great.
The fairways are wide and there are not a lot of trees, so you can hit one way left or right onto an adjoining fairway and still play your next shot. However, the downside to this is that a lot of balls can bounce to where you are playing. During our round, we had FIVE shots from other groups ahead/behind us bounce pretty close to us.
The green on the fourth hole has about three different tiers. Make sure you hit it the right distance on your approach or you will have a crazy uphill or downhill putt. The first par-5 is No. 6 and is a slightly odd hole. Unless you can hit a high draw, the fairway is pretty narrow and a good chance you will hit it into the far rough. Holes No. 9 and No. 18 are on opposite sides of a lake that can provide some big challenges if you cannot hit it to a pretty specific spot on the fairway.
A great place to play but a little expensive on Saturdays. Try and book earlier to save some bucks.
Favorable Conditions - Yardage Markers On Par 3's Now
Overall, the conditioning of the course is good. Greens are a little wet, soft and slower. Many ball marks on the greens, especially the par 3"s. The fairways and grass around the greens were very good. Only fairway (#9) had some crabgrass growing. For some reason the tee boxes were dry and you had a hard time putting a tee in the ground.
Finally, the course has put yardage markers on all par 3's. Yeah! They have also painted lines on the cart paths too (yellow, blue, white and red).
Still No Yardage Markers on Par 3's
I wrote a review last year, not understanding why they do not have yardage markers on the par 3's. Nothing has changed. This helps speed up play. Pace of play was not good.
Course conditions were fine. Struggling with some of the fringes.
Nice Course But Lacks Yardage Markers
This a fun, playable golf course that we enjoy playing several times a year. It is a flat, links style course with two difficult holes to finish each nine. You can have a great score but you have to get through these two holes. From the white tees, if you hit a good drive, you can reach all the par 5's, which makes it fun. The course was in great shape too. The pace of play was a little slow, a foursome had to wait on a threesome all day. They have a small clubhouse with a fine selection of beers on tap and in the cooler.
Here is my biggest problem with this course. They have no yardage markers on any of the par 3's. I can't understand this! You can speed up the pace of play just by doing this. It can get a little confusing in the fairways too. They use green as their 200 yard color (most courses use blue). They also have black markers too, which I think are 175 or 125. Nothing is mentioned on the scorecard about this.
Love this course!
The course is great shape, well maintained and the staff is very friendly. I am surprised that the course is in a great a shape as it is because of two floods in the last 18 months. I love playing here.
Great links course
I love this place. Unlike the overpriced Landings, Aberdeen is a true links course in every way. It is all out there in front of you - no blind shots or trickery. If the wind is down, you can score very well here. But just like a true Scottish links, when the wind blows, Aberdeen becomes a beast. But it is one of the fairest layouts in the area - you're rewarded for great shots, and penalized for poor ones.
The greens are smooth and reasonably fast, and in the 5 times I've played here, it was in good condition every time. The US Kids Golf tour held an event out here and my son loved it. Everyone was friendly and the course was perfect for kids -- it can play as short as under 5000, or over 7200 - a true test for all skills levels.
I prefer walking, and while they obviously offer carts, this is simply a great track to walk. No severe elevation changes, and most green-to-tee walks are less than 30 seconds.
My only criticism of the place is their Pro Shop and food/amenities is severely lacking. It has a construction trailer feel to it. But the staff is friendly, and it's one of my favorite places to play. Prices are better than most courses of equal stature.
Everyone but me should hate this course
Terrible, Terrible golf course. Please do not play it.
If you do, it will be harder for me to get on and I love the course.
As advertised, a Scottish Links experience. Always windy as there are few trees to break the wind coming off the nearby river valley, gorse type rough, lots of sand traps, and a fun, fun layout that is always nicely maintained. Additionally, dependent upon how the seriously evil management sets it up with pin placements, it can be incredibly challenging once you reach the green.....if you ever do.
Really not worth your time. If, however, you need to round out a foursome there, please contact me. I love this golf course
Definitely worth playing
I had not played this course in the past but always like to try those billed as "links" style. Wind was blowing hard when we played and that added to the challenge. Course was in nice condition. Fairways are zoysia and in very good shape. Greens were mostly fast and in good condition although there were a decent number of unrepaired ball marks or poorly repaired ball marks. You need to play this course a couple of times to get a good feel. Will definitely be back. Gender is male.
good fairways average greens
course is in good condition for this time of year. a little pricey
Fun course, great condition
I have not played this course in about 8 years. I am sorry I did not return sooner. Pace of play was excellent! Greens and fairways were in perfect condition. I also forgot how fun this links course is to play. A+
I like the link style course
Enjoyable layout if you like the link style course this is a good one! We'll maintained and fall is a pretty time to view the hills surrounding the course
beautiful day
Absolutely beautiful weather and a great way to spend the day. Course was in good condition and the greens were cut and rolled, so they had a little speed to them. My first time playing the course, so it helped that we were partnered up with a couple of people familiar with the course. Tee times were a little behind because of the morning dew. Will certainly go back and try again.
Top notch condition
Good: Course condition is excellent. The staff are aces
Bad: none at all
The only true links course in St Louis
This place is great. the clubhouse staff is on top of things. the course is perfect. Spectacular views of the valley. Way to go guys.
LOOOOONNNNGGGG Waits
Course was in decent condition after heavy rain a couple days before. Staff was nice and it was a nice Saturday afternoon so we expected it to be busy....but this was ridiculous. ONE group was holding up the ENTIRE course leading to 5.5 or 6 hour rounds and there was NO marshal to be found. The group was totally oblivious and the staff evidently did not care. Surprising for such a good course normally.
