Knollwood Golf Club - Old
About
Knollwood Golf Club is home to two 18-hole courses, the Old and the New. The golf courses were built nearly 20 years apart. Opened in 1970, the Old Course is spread across beautiful parkland that is covered in trees. The layout is more traditional and less challenging than the other course at Knollwood Golf Club, but it is still an entertaining round. The main priority in creating the golf course was to not only maintain the natural features of the terrain, but also enhance it. Thousands of trees were planted in addition to those already present throughout the golf course. The result is a unique course that players of all skill levels will enjoy.

SHORT BUT CHALLENGING
All good - but -when we went to start we were move to the back 9 for" Foot Golf"
something like golf with soccer balls
Not a very safe thing when we overlapped on the front nine ..Also slows all the golf as we are all pushed to the back nine and of course caught up at 10...Avoid the Foot golf ..at all costs
Wouldn't play here Knowing that was happening again .. Too disruptive and not safe for the foot players
This course is well maintained
Great course. I love playing at Knowlwood. Always a nice experience. Old and new course. Thank you.
Most Important - Needs A Marshall
Pros
Friendly staff. (however only encountered 2 all day, one in pro shop to take money and the starter)
Course conditions were nice as well as the layout.
Price ($34 as a deal on golf now...was a deal until cons below were encountered)
Cons
No marshall. (pace of play was terrible, we left after 13 holes as a 2some in front of us was significantly holding up our 4some for multiple holes...felt rushed and delayed the entire time. Another example; after 9 we went directly to 10 in an effort to create proper space and pace...no drinks or lunch and it was hot...only to have two 2somes appear as we finished teeing off. These are only two of multiple examples I could cite where pace of play was so bad it led us to finally just leave)
No food/beverage cart.
This was my second chance given to this course but unfortunately I do not think I will go back.
Sandy greens
Having greens in good condition is part of golf. All the greens on this course were heavily sanded which affected putting.
Not bad
Course was in ok shape, pace of play was kind of slow but the Marshall was trying to do his job. Staff was friendly and the facilities were nice. Will return.
Logistics issues
We arrived at the course only to find out that our tee time should not have been allowed as there was a shotgun tournament scheduled at the same time. Knollwood's other course also had a tournament going on. We were allowed to play the back nine, but still had to wait for a (pre-oaid) cart to be made available. No consideration for our inconvenience was offered.
Thoughts
Course was good. Not nearly as nice as the new course which I have played several times. Also, got clogged up really badly on the front 9, due to one group. Could have been easily remedied by a marshal on the course so everyone could have enjoyed more (including the group causing the clogging). I have no problem with slow play mid week when the course is no where near full, but someone just needs to manage it a little bit :)
Easy to par course
Not very challenging holes quite short. Greens were sanded so affected game. Good course if you want to practice your wedges. Would not pay full price to play.
Back Nine Closed
Was shocked to arrive only to see a sign at the pro shop that the back nine was "closed today for maintenance". Also, the greens on the front nine had been aerated, and top dressed. No where on Golf Now's posting did it show an "aeration alert", which I know there is a provision to add an icon warning. Quite disappointed. Knollwood is a fine course, and usually in great shape. Obviously, maintenance is required to keep the course in good shape, but they should have issued a warning on Golf Now. As I said, Knollwood is a decent course,
Great Course, Short but Challenging
Knollwood has quickly become one of my favourite courses in Hamilton. It does not play very long (less than 6000 I think). However, the course plays like a full-sized golf course, and is quite challenging in it shot making. There are a few holes where you are driving out of a chute, and the greens seem to have been designed by the devil himself. All in all, it is a great day out. This particular round took nearly 5 hours as my twosome was paired with a twosome who was beginning. It was alright, but I would have appreciated the ability to play just as our twosome.
Ancaster's Little Gem
Great value for the money! Good greens with fantastic scenery as all the holes are tree-lined and set off on their own. Pace of play was great and the overall experience was quite enjoyable.
A well kept, interesting course
I have not played the Old Knollwood course for a few years. I was impressed by how it had matured, and by the great improvement in course condition. Overall, it is a well kept mature course with water hazards on several holes, and many trees. However, the cart paths should be renewed and the greens are somewhat slow. The pace of play was excellent on a Friday at 0850 and was just over 3 hours. The course is quite scenic, the trees mature, the fairways undulating and many of the greens have significant slopes. At the GolfNow price, the value was excellent!
Simply magnificent and only getting better!
After playing the Old last year I was not to happy to hear our teetime was at the Old. Little did I know, this course is in incredible shape! The only thing that needed work was some tee boxes but after speaking to the young man in the proshop and hearing how bad the course was at this time last year I am extremely intrigued to see the conditions of this course next season!
You can't go wrong at Knollwood Old!
Short but interesting
Not a long course but makes you use most of your clubs in your bag
Excellent course
A moderately challenging course. Lovely setting and easy to get to . Great deals available. Will return again.
Great Place for the short game tune up!
I had a friend down from Montreal and took him there one he arrived! Got a terrific rate from golf not and we were off! I had not played there for many years and it is well matured now from what I remembered. A good challenge and don't let the short yardage mess with you! It is still requires some shot shapes or you will be in trouble!
A Beautiful Course
This is the sort of course that makes membership tempting. The course has been around for decades, and ages very well. Aside from being a fun, moderately challenging and well paced 18 holes; the course offers a comfortable and well equipped clubhouse. I will definitely be returning to Knollwood very soon.
Old Knollwood
Overall short course, but enough challenges to make it interesting, greens were in great shape. I questioned some of the posted length of holes especially the short 17th. which read 128yds. played
more like 110yds.
Beautiful facility and course!
As a couple, a course sometimes plays better for one or the other of us. We both enjoyed this course, and had equal opportunity for pars and birdies! Well-kept, with some difficult greens, woods, and water - little to no sand (yay!) we had a spendid round and were also impressed with the hospitality of the staff, beautiful barn that is the clubhouse and banquet facilities, and easy of finding the course from the highway as we were driving across Ontario, on vacation.
Short & Quaint
Overall course conditions were good. Layout is nice through trees but too many short par 4's. Par 5 and 3 are good. Pace of play was great and played in 3 hours.
