The catch! Photo submitted by GolfGTA on 08/02/2013
One of my very few regretted rounds
I'm not usually one to write reviews, but braeben was EASILY my least favourite round of the year. Not even because of a poor score, but rather just so many faults by the course itself. To start, I was aware of the blind holes, but when the score card distance doesn't match the tee box sign, you start to feel unsure. And then when I asked for a course map book in preparation for the a dozen blind holes, they said they didn't have one this year. Lovely.
I went down to the range to take advantage of the included small bucket in the $48 green fee, just to walk into a group of 6 or 7 total amateurs taking up half the range, partying it up in street clothes louder then a parade of starting shotguns. Isn't this supposed to be a $60-$70 course? I tried to forget about it and just get some touches in, but when you can't even see your ball land or know what distance the markers are at, I decided to wrap it and just head to the first tee
1/8 of the bunkers were totally out of play (rock hard under construction), and the greens felt almost unreadable and slow. Not to mention a couple holes had patches of the green that were like a rippled bumpy carpet, forcing you to simply move your ball off that region.
Again, I tried to forget about it, still enjoy the round, and grab a beer from the cart girl - oh wait. There wasn't one. From 2 til 6:30 pm.
I read that there was some nice scenery being so elevated, but I felt that it was just an odd, poor atmosphere. Hearing and seeing all the road traffic and the tops of small residential houses, just reminded that the course was literally built on an old garbage dump.
Thankfully you live and learn. I use golf now religiously and have never regretted a round so much. Should of taken note it wasn't going to be a good day when the starting Marshall wouldn't answer your simple "how are you" questions and then cut off your conversation to your playing partner. First and last time you'll see me pay ANYTHING to play this course.
Challenging course
This was my first time playing here and it wont be my last... my only complaint is there was no hole layout at each tee box and the map on the back of the score card wasnt much help. I was hitting blind on some holes as I couldn't tell where the green was. Other then that it was a great course and very well maintained.
Nice course
It's a nice course. Only issue is a lot of players seem to chew up the course and not repair ball marks on the greens. For the condition the course is being left in it is a bit overpriced. For $100 there are better options, but with a good price from golfnow.com it's a good value
tight course
Great condition greens a little rough.
It is windy, even when you might think the wind won't be factor before teeing off. Overall great course, a little short but several the options available. We played a 4hr round so pace wasn't a problem. I would play here again.
Great course layout
Excellent golf course. Challenges your abilities. Very well maintained. Courteous and helpful staff! Had a wonderful time!
Nice for a city course
Short but at times challenging holes.
some tricky holes that you are making blind shots.
Wind comes into play.
BraeBen
Course in great shape and staff very personable, enjoyed playing it
Fun and challenging
Great course with an even better view. Make sure to account for the wind and avoid the fescue.
Braeben is a competent (Missisauga) municipal course...
...which is good value for money if you get a good deal on Golf Now. It's built on an old garbage dump but it doesn't show that way for the most part. The course is fairly tight on a number of holes so could use a few more yardage markers/posts i.e. it's often target golf so you need to play it a few times to realize where are the trouble is.
WHERE ARE THE MARSHALLS WHEN YOU NEED THEM
Took our foursome 5hrs and 10 mins for the round, considering that it was a relatively slow day. The holes were wide open in front of the group that was ahead us and no marshalls in sight to speed up play.
The course plays extremely well, we are regular customers, just wish someone would pay more attention to the pace of play.
Reality Check
I played this course in the early morning on a weekend recently, and I must say that I was vexed. I had played previously at Brae Ben on two occasions, and each time I had made similar mistakes. While it is true that I had a few bright moments on the shorter holes midway throught the course, and had a couple of good drives on the longer, I found this to be a lot tougher than I expected. I commented to the golfer that I was paired with that I felt like an American golfer in Britain. The fairways were narrow, there were no trees, the rough was tough and the putting greens seemed to have holes that rose ever so slightly above grade to defy anything but a straight on putt. While I thought my game had improved, I clearly hadn't played at a truly challenging par 5 lately. Although, (while I was playing the last few in the rain) I thought I would never go back, I am going to golfing there till heck freezes over or till I make and beak par. This is a very challenging course, but if you can, try to add this course as a place with excellent opportunities to improve your game.
We played on 1 SEP 2017(Friday), pace was very slow. Worst is Marshall "Jorge" asked golfer behind us to hit driver while we are still at fairway. Ball land 8 yeards in front of us. Jorge said that's only way to speed up the game!!!
NO NEVER PLAY IN THIS COURSE AGAIN!
Great Course
The course was in great conditions, greens were perfect, fairways good however very tight. The course is very exposed and every hole seems to play into the wind. Rough is deep and normally a wayward ball is lost.
Don't be fooled by the yardage, blue tees may be less than 6000-yards however the wind, narrow fairways and blind tee shots will prove to be a good test of golf.
No complaints about the course and condition.
Only complaint is we were behind a small tournament and couple of foursome who were determined to play from the tips, none of them broke a 100.
Pace of play was well over 5-hours, which is not enjoyable.
Better marshalling would make this a very enjoyable course to play,
Due to all the blind shots, playing this course a second time is a must. I look forward to my next visit,
Course is Interesting to Play
Course needs a power cart considering the hilly terrain, which is a blessing. Every hole is different presenting unique perspective. Excellent views of the lake, city, etc. it is always windy here considering the location. Really enjoyed golfing here.

What happenned to the early bird special
I play this course regularly on a Friday morning. I'm a 9 handicap and this course is not for everyone. It's short, 6400 from the tips, 6000 from the blues, but it can be extremely difficult if the wind is blowing as it is completely exposed. You have to hit the ball straight, and the driver can be left in the bag on many holes. Greens roll great, fairways are in great shape.
BUT, this year, they have done away with the early bird special which drew me to this course originally. In 2014 the early bird special was $48 all in. Great price for a great course. This year, no early bird and $70...I know this is Toronto and that is likely cheap, but if you drive further west towards Hamilton you have so many choices, all for less than $50 and as good as and often better than Braeben for an extra 20-30 minute drive for me as I left east of the Don Valley.
I've played Braeben twice this year so far and we were the first tee off. Had the entire course to ourselves, maybe that's worth $70 on its own! But it's too much. No one teed off until about 8 on both occasions after us. Bring back the early bird and you'll bring back the magic...
FYI, pace of play is a 5 as we are first tee off and dictate the pace ourselves...best way to play.
Challenging. Course
On a windy day it is very difficult to control the balls and the speed and the direction. Accuracy is key on almost every holes. It's a great course.
A true links course that's hard to beat
I've played this course several times and it's always impressive. Every hole offers a new challenge and the course is stunning. You can see the entire city and even the CN tower as the course is raised above street level by about 50 feet in places. They have a fun acadamy par three course too and a driving range. I got a hot deal for 35 dollars with a cart. A crazy value. It's worth paying more.
Course in excellent condition
Course was not crowded at all considering the weather and the price. We paid $54 each on golf now, which was more than I would have paid walking and as a senior. My playing companion wanted the cart however and he is also not eligible for senior rates, so all in all a great deal. Fairways had large aeration dimples holes but were excellent otherwise. Greens were soft rolling smooth with a bit of pace. Lots of unfixed ball marks, but not too beat up yet.
Wind always BLOWS!
A cart is needed not only because of the elevation changes, but there are a lot of blind tee shots, so you need to drive ahead to take a look until you've played it a few times.
This course is NOT for the first timers! Always tons of wind, BIG, DEEP, Bunkers, and BIG, undulating, FAST, greens. Although, being a little early in the season because of the relentless winter, the greens were not quite up to their usual quality through no fault of the course. Overall, it was in excellent condition, as usual. It only plays 5800 yards from the Blues, but don't be fooled - that's more than enough of a challenge for the average weekend golfer with this layout, and the ever present wind
Wow!
The course at Braeben was in unbelievably great shape for this time of year. I've played 6 different courses this year, and Braeben was by far bar non the best course. For conditions and pace of play. Highly recommend this course to everybody.
very tough and tight holes
The course was in good shape, slightly windy day and its definitely a challenging course. You have to place your shot otherwise your ball is gone.
