River Bend Resort & Country Club
About
Set along the Rio Grande River, this is a scenic course with spectacular views. The front nine was built in 1987, and the back nine followed in 1992. The highlight of the course is what is perhaps the longest water hazard in Texas, the Rio Grande River, which flows along holes 5 through 13 on the left side of the fairway.
Narrow fairways and grass bunkers make the course tough, especially when the wind is howling, as it is tough to hit the small, firm greens. Water is everywhere. No. 14 is the only hole without water. The par 3 17th hole, with its island greens, headlines a series of demanding par 3 holes. The last hole plays 434 yards into the wind and has out-of-bounds on either side of the fairway.
Getting there : From Harlingen take Hwy. 77 south. When you come to Hwy. 802 turn right, then continue until you reach Hwy 281. Turn right again and drive approximately 2.5 miles to the course

Greens are getting better but need to be punched which I understand has already been scheduled for middle of next month. Fairways are playable but more water on them result in a tremendous benefit. Course is in an over 55 age neighborhood so wishing for fewer “older couples” being out there is a wasted wish however a more active Ranger program would help. Too many times I see entire 4-somes all go to one ball together then after that player hits they all go to the second ball and so on....really slows down play. I know it a social game but...
Probably the best in the area
Even after just getting through the worse of the area’s winter ( this is south Texas after all) the course was in decent shape and the greens rolled true even if they did look a little rough. Good layout with some challenging holes mixed in with some shortish birdieable ones. Pace was enjoyable and walking was allowed although I didn’t see many people doing so. Situated among an age restricted (over 55) RV, park model and garden home community that caters primarily to the “Winter Texans” there a very nice mix of short, tight holes with longer holes doglegging both left and right. Greens were relatively flat but had some subtle movement. Several holes played right next to the Rio Grande.
Beautiful course
Golf Now coupon applied. Greens were in much better condition considering we had a freeze the week before.
Fun time during the Texas freeze
Course was in good shape inspite of the coldest weather in 40 years. Greens were fast and true. Fairways wet.
Love Riverbend
Great. Place to play and 18 holes are well laid out
Golf day
A very windy day on the course. Fast round on the front nine. Back nine super slow. Group of four came out after lunch. We had a group of two ahead of us. ,
Great First Time
The course is one of the best I played in the area in terms of its condition. It is very playable but presents some challenges because of the layout. We did get behind a 5-some that slowed us down for 4 holes on the front but they let us play through at the turn. The slightly uneven tee boxes did present a challenge on a couple of holes. Now that I have played the course once, I look forward to going back and playing it again.
