Golfer Reviews
Greens
Tee box to green in fine shape. Greens were unacceptable for this fine layout. Disappointed, hopefully greens will be in better shape for prime season.
Course
Some of the fairways were great, the the tee boxes were poorly maintain, sand traps were very bad in worst, the greens. I've never played a round with greens this bad. You had 2 provisional greens that were poorly created. I can't believe you expect to have your Grand Opening with the greens n traps in this bad shape. I wasted a perfect day for a round of golf at this course.
Course conditions...
Past few years course conditions terrible. It appears a material effort is being brought to improving the conditions.
First timer
Enjoyed my1st time here and vwill be returning. Greeted by a very nice gentleman at the bag drop so I anticipated it being a good day. Some repairs ongoing but won't affect your play unless you hit an errant shot. Pace of place was very good. Slowed a little towards the end of our round but that tends to happen when a twosome follows a foursome. Carts in excellent shape. Facilities are in excellent shape as well. Looking forward to playing there again.
Needs work. I can tell they are trying to make it better.
Next spring it should be in great shape. I will return before the end of the year to see how it is progressing.
Getting better
Southern oaks is showing some real potential the course condition is getting better and better. It shows that someone is actually caring! I can't wait to see what it looks like in about a month. Worth the round and trip. A nice challenge from the tips.
Wait until they fix this course
I was looking for a place to play early AM and booked Southern Oaks. I knew that it would be cold and windy, having just played a private club in Ft. Worth the day before. The weather was not good, but the condition of Southern Oaks left much to be desired. In fact, we stopped and walked off the course after just eight holes as the lack of grass on the fairways, numerous GUR spots and greens under repair made it a pointless exercise in futility.
It appears that they have been putting some money into the course, and based on other reviews, the owners are trying to improve. I should have listened to the reviews rather than my friend who told me that Southern Oaks was a good bet. It was not a bad track, but I would not play there again for at least a few years to see if the changes take place and they can whip it into shape. At the price paid ($95 for two players), it was not a bargain at all.
One last note: the dirt bike races going on all morning adjacent to the course made for a constant source of annoyance. Not very conducive to concentration.
Not in great condition
The greens were not very good, one green had no grass and was completely sand. Most bunkers were full of water even though it had not rained in about a week. Very nice practice range.
Under Construction
Several of the holes were under construction. Even though we were able to tee off ahead of schedule, it was a loooong round. It took 5-1/2 hours to play 18.
Excited about improvements
This course was neglected under prior owner and course conditions still reflect that. There were some bare places on fairways, but these should improve when the grass starts growing again. Clearly, the new owner has made substantial improvements showing a commitment to make this a fine golf course. Looking forward to Spring to see how much better the course conditions get.
this course is improving for the better.
really doing a good job at improving the overall feel and look of the course. a great place to spend some time at.
great service -driving at the bag drop , staff was already to great and have the cart ready for you, like those facility that charge a lot.
staff are very nice! club house is moderate in size but very elegant and have that family/home/warm feeling.. even with the texas weather the green are in.great shape. definitely will come back and play this course, again and again.
Back at home.
I have played for over a year now, and I must say that they have come a long way. Continuous improvements are going to make SO one of the better courses to play.
Don't waste your money
I don't understand why this course has some of the most expensive rates on golfnow. I was very disappointed with this course. A lot of the fairways had hazards because of some maintenance that was being done on the course (digging giant holes/muddy spots). This place is expensive for no reason, go play somewhere else.
Major Upgrades and improvements
Has a new owner and many improvements are evident - from the clubhouse (really good food now) to a retainer wall at #17 which will save two humongous trees which would have been left to die and fall if the new owner hadn't got this done pdq. I suspect there will be ongoing improvements - to make this one of the premier courses in DFW. It already boasted a great layout and the area is very nice - high tier homes and forest all around. The improvements to the driving range/practice areas are significant. I look forward to playing this course regularly and will recommend it to all my golf buddies.
Best shape it's been in.
This is the best that southern oaks has looked . Fairways were in great shape and the greens were forgiving . Well worth the money this time . I've played several times in the past few years and whoever managing it has got it back on track ! The cart girls and the bartender were complete sweethearts and made sure we were well equipped with beverages .
Improving conditions
Played the first time in over a year and the fairway conditions are much improved compared to prior experience last year. Greens were in really good shape but pace of putts were slow
Fairways need work
The fairways on most holes were very dry. We played on a Saturday afternoon & had to wait during our round because they were watering on the hole we were about to play. Greens are in good shape.
challenging course
considering how hot and dry its been course was in pretty good shape. if anything the fringe around greens were over watered. i had balls on 6 and 11 that became fried eggs in the fringe just 2 feet off the green.
challenging, but fun.
This course is a hidden treasure. We played on a Saturday morning in four hours, with a very slow foursome in front of us. Greens are in good shape. Good value on golfnow.com.
