Royal Manchester Golf Links

About
Situated along the shores of the Susquehanna River, Royal Manchester Golf Club is tucked away in the rolling hills of northern York County. The course is just a few miles outside Harrisburg but the traditional links design will transport you to the seaside courses of the British Isles. Like the Old Course at St. Andrews and Royal Latham, which served as the inspiration, the golf course has an open, windswept landscape with only two bodies of water. The 15th, the longest par 3 on the course, is the only hole set among the few trees that dot the landscape. The most formidable challenge comes from the prevailing winds as well as the strategically placed bunkers. Royal Manchester Golf Club finishes with a memorable view of its signature waterfall that cascades down into a sparkling pond.

Fast and Firm
We'd had a good bit of rain the night before this round and the whole week prior. I figured just as many public course's are this time of year we'd be wading through the water however, it was not to be. The fairways and greens were fast and firm and none of our balls plugged once. The only complaint I can have is that the greens were peppered with ball marks and it looked it none of the regulars feel the need to fix their own. Other than that it's great layout and challenging but score-able. Go play it.
Nice Course
Course was in great shape and challenging from the blues. Greens were slow in the am, fast once dried out in the afternoon. Will definitely play there again. Will be come much more painful on slightly errant shots once again that fescue grows out in 2-3 weeks....
My favorite course in this region of PA to play by far
I would rather play this course than any country club in this region of South Central PA. Incredible shape and the greens roll incredibly true! When rain hits and all the courses have cart path restrictions and the like, this course built over fly ash from Bruner Island drains amazingly well!
The fescue is rounding into form now so plan on staying off the mounds with your ball and your carts. Finished with a par today on 14 before having to cut out a little early due to another obligation. The speed on the greens is fantastic and by May should be very fast in a good way.
Great shape for this time of year
Greens were not punched yet, rolled well and the grass is still low. Very pleasant round of golf.
Nice open course with challenging features.
For my first time playing this course, I really enjoyed the overall experience. The layout is a little strange and crammed, but most of the fairways are pretty wide that allowed room for error. The course catches a lot of wind and the #1 handicap hole really took me by surprise. Would definitely return once they obtain their liquor license for the bar/restaurant. They recently changed management and expect to have the license sometime in May or June. I will definitely become a regular at the course, as I live nearby.
Not closing at all: New Management Company and same owner
This remains my favorite public course in South entrap PA to play as it drains much better than all the rest. The course is in great shape all things considered!
I believe that the higher caliber of management company will improve the operations and draw even more than it was. This is still a gem and all should get out and play it byob for 60 days before the rough grows in again! Love this course!!!!
A beautiful Gem
I drove 77 miles to play this course, I remember playing it with friends in the past and love coming back.
Best public course in south central PA with best drainage and overall conditions
Best public course in Southcentral PA. Pilgrim’s Oak is close to some extent and it does not drain nearly as well as Royal Manchester. Considering the recency of snow, rain and bitterly cold temperatures, the course was extremely playable! My favorite public course in this region of PA! They need to get hot food available back at the turn with no excuses in the afternoon - hot dogs or something. Love the greens!
Always a warm welcome, always a great experience. The course conditions are always superb. Restaurant Serves great food. A five star experience!
Always a great great experience all around for a very reasonable price!
Best public course in our region
This is the best public course in our region. It drains much better than any other course I have seen because of how it sits and what it sits on and how they built it.
I wish other golfers would take better care of ball marks on the greens and their divots in the fairways and that there was seed in the cart for fairway repair. Truly, that issue is everywhere. If everyone fixed their ball mark plus one or two others each time on every green, play would improve significantly at every course.
I love the variation of the holes on this course. It is a challenging and still a fair test. The greens are fast and not ridiculous like at a few of the country clubs that I have played in the region. I played awful by 10 strokes above my average at least and still love this course.
This time of year the rough can be punishing and the fescue is a forget about it almost guaranteed lost ball with penalty and a drop.
I wish it was closer to where I live as I would play it more often. Tremendous chipping greens and practice facilities. Great place to go to work on your game!
Enjoy this gem and take friends! Wish other courses in the region with other styles (non-links) were equally nice as here. Good pace of play even on a Sunday as I also played there, yesterday!
Great Course
Had a little trouble finding the course but really enjoyed the course, very good layout.. It was in good condition and the price was very reasonable.
Second Trip to Royal Manchester this Season...
From the BWI area, it takes about 1.5 hrs., but it's well worth it. I was curious what the conditions would be due to all the rain we've had in the last two weeks. I was pleasantly surprised!! Fairways were dry, green and lush, and the bunkers were also dry. The rough was a little longer than normal, but certainly playable. And, the greens are some of the best in the area. The course was packed--it took 5 hrs to play on a busy Saturday. And, the twosome we were paired with didn't know golf course etiquette--walking in your line, walking behind you during your swing, talking while you're standing over the ball...ugh! But, even that couldn't detract from the great course conditions. Kudos to the Super for a job well done on this course. Great layout (One of my favorites), and some holes a challenge to play. It was about 64-65 degrees and a gentle wind blowing across these links, so was a little cooler than we expected. But, this course is worth the trip!
A Solid Second Experience
Royal Manchester continues to provide a very good golfing experience with a unique links-style layout, good conditions, great amenities and a friendly staff.
This was my second time playing here, the first was back in April before the fescue had grown up. In peak season, the course is even more appealing from the tee with inviting fairways but menacing-looking rough. Despite the open layout, wind wasn’t a factor during my round but it’s nice that most holes play in a variety of directions to give you diverse playing conditions when the wind is blowing.
In terms of conditions, the greens were the highlight when I played back in the spring but that wasn’t so much the case this time around. They were noticeably slower, having be aerated a few weeks before and therefore they are a little bumpy as well. Moreover, the heavy use of the course meant innumerous ball marks on the greens. My playing partners and I were repairing a good half-dozen per hole and that was only a fraction of the imperfections from previous poor self-maintenance.
Bumpy greens aside, the rest of the course was in good shape though not as immaculate as I remember. Still, the bunkers were excellent and the fairways were pretty smooth.
Those who opt to spend the $5 extra on a cart here are treated with the world’s fastest electric carts! A lot of fun to zip around in them even if it didn’t result in faster play. With three- and foursomes playing in front, it was just over 4 hours start to finish but the first 5 holes were on my own.
The staff and practice facilities remain the highlight of this course and I would love to be a member here if I lived closer. Perhaps additional membership would also improve the care of the greens. Even still, the course remains a decent value and I definitely recommend checking it out at least once!

Links Golf at its best outside of the PGA Tour
A challenging, yet fun links course. Greens are firm and sound like a gymnastics spring board when high lifted shots land on them. You can run shots up the fairway and allow them to rollout on to the green. Avoid the fescue!
Great Day on the Links
This was my first trip to Royal Manchester, and I'm anxious to come back. Great course that demanded shot making for scoring without being overly punitive for a less than perfect shot. Very little in the way of repetition from hole to hole. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Had two foursomes in front of us that were rather slow, and is the reason for the fair pace of play rating. Still managed to play 18 in 4 and 1/2 hours.
