Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Golf Club
About
Thankfully Fredericksburg offers this facility as a respite from incessant turista shopping along the main drag. While not overly fancy, this little Hill Country course gets the job done while the shoppers in the family spend their days in town.
The Jeffery D. Blume-designed track plays around 6,700 yards from the tips and includes plenty of trees and water hazards that get in the way.
You’ll notice the two par 5s on the front. No. 3 is the signature, playing 523 yards and forcing a shot over a creek, and another over a bluff. No. 5 is longer, a testy 578 yards from the back.
The most difficult rated hole is the No. 9, a 425-yard par 4, but the regulars complain more about the challenging 18th, an even longer par 4 that plays 450 yards from the tips.
Getting there : The course is just south of town on the west side of the highway.

Hidden gem
This is a hidden gem ! Fun to play, a great layout and very reasonable green fee. Very nice municipal course.
A hidden gem? That's the best compliment we've ever received! Thanks so much for the great review, and feel free to come back whenever you're in the mood to play!
Good day/weekend trippin' location.
This is a nice little course on the edge of one of the bigger day trippin’ destinations in Texas. While we simply drove over and back from Austin, I can certainly see working this into a weekend of relaxation in the area. The course is situated next to a small RV park and the Gillespie County Airport. I think most folks actually enjoy the sound of the smaller aircraft that fly in and out on occasion; we certainly do. The airport has the 1940’s style Hanger Hotel and Airport Diner. And if you’re up to it, you might work in a wine tour or two in the Fredericksburg area. Make a weekend of it and stay at a local bed & breakfast and cruise around the shops in town.
The course is full of big Texas oak trees. Past that, there’s little to no rough with regard to cedar trees, bushes, etc. that you often find in hill country courses. This allows you to scramble pretty easily. In some spots, the course has a little up/down rolling elevation to make things a little more interesting. I was truly expecting more of a flat links style course but thoroughly enjoyed the small challenges.
The tees and greens were a little close to one another on a few holes. Of course, that’s more common on some of the tracks that were designed years back. It’s just something to take note of so that you’re aware of others around you. There are times when you need to cut the chatter to avoid disturbing the player putting nearby. On the same note, you need to be aware of wayward balls being hit near your tee. Fore!
Some of the tee boxes had either seen quite a bit of play or hadn’t been moved in a day or three. Some of them simply had excessive divots while other holes had plenty of nice grass from which to hit. It happens. But as courses know, they need to move the boxes and replace grass more often on those par 3’s where everyone’s taking a divot. All of the fairways appeared to be in fine shape. I found that many of the green skirt areas had a couple different grasses. But that’s something that can be hard to maintain – especially for a smaller staffed course unlike some of the big dollar country clubs. Of course if I’d just hit the green in regulation then these grasses would be of no concern to me. All in all the greens were quite nice, well cut, and with only a few bad spots here and there. For the most part, those spots were due to us golfers. We need to teach some of you to fix your ball marks; saw way too many from the past week or three that had damaged the greens. It makes a huge difference in the recovery of the grass.
Seems like most of the holes had a fairway and/or greenside bunker or two – all nicely done and well maintained. Personally, I do prefer a bigger bunker as opposed to those little pot bunker variety. Sounds odd, huh!? Nothing like hitting a good shot into a bunker that’s only a few yards wide. I find that low percentage probability even more cruel than if I found a larger beach.
There’s plenty of H2O on the course to help water the course and keep wildlife such as large ducks and geese around. FYI, geese = unpleasant noise. Along with three ponds there’s a nice creek that runs through a good portion of the layout. These make for a few forced carries which I think every golf course needs to keep us humble.
A couple extra course observations:
I believe I saw two water cooler stations – one on each nine. Personally, I’d like to see two per nine because I tend to play in the heat and certainly take advantage of these being available at every opportunity. The gas carts were newer and certainly did the job. This course would also be very walk-able for anyone so inclined.
The pro shop, banquet room (seating for 100 or so with scoreboards, PA, etc), Red Bird Grill, etc. were all very well done, clean/kept, and with ample space to move around. I can’t speak for the Grill’s full menu but we did get some of their big ‘stadium style’ hot dogs and fountain drinks (which I prefer). One suggestion -- add a few ceiling fans. While the vaulted ceiling will help pull up some of the heat, fan movement would’ve been nice to have; it’s Texas after all. And finally, the entire staff was 100% Texas friendly – courteous and accommodating.
Thanks so much for your thorough review of our course, GordonATX! We appreciate your suggestions and mindful observations of the course's merits and drawbacks. We don't often get reviews that are this in-depth, but when these do come along, it's a chance to really hear from our guests. We've made a note of your suggestions and will be mulling them over in the coming months. In the meantime, please feel free to come back -- we're always happy to have you!
Interesting layout
To bad it was windy and rainy it would have made the experience more enjoyable. The greens were great and fairways ample. This would be a course I would like to play again.
So sorry to hear about the weather during your visit! We agree that you'd have had a much better time if it'd been cooperating. Regardless, we'd love to have you back as well, so we look forward to your next visit!
It's a shame to hear the weather wasn't cooperating! We agree you'd have had a much better experience if that weren't the case. We'd love to have you come by and play again, so reach out to us whenever! Looking forward to hearing from you.
Came to Fredericksburg just to play this course again.
We played 9 holes on our way thru to Arizona for the winter. Liked the course so we made a point of returning to play it again on our way home. The fact that it is so close to the campground is a bonus!
Thanks so much for stopping by on your trip! Knowing it was a notable stop for you is awesome, so we're glad you had a good time. We hope to see you again sometime soon!
Nice Course
Lady Bird Golf Course in a park near Fredericksburg, TX. The layout has some elevation changes that make for interesting holes. The fairways and greens were in good condition, although the greens were slower than I am used to in Austin. The course was crowded on a Wed. afternoon, with a number of buses that brought in kids from nearby schools to practice and play. Front nine played very slow, but the crowd dwindled and we made good time on the back. We look forward to playing here again.
Despite it being a bit busier than a typical Wednesday, all-in-all it sounds like you had a nice visit! Thanks so much for picking our course. We look forward to you playing with us again, too, so stop by whenever you're looking to play. Cheers!
Great tract
The staff is great, the greens where awesome, rolled true and soft.
Hill Country Treat

F'burg City Council - get out of their way.
Golf course personnel doing a good job of getting this course in shape after the recent re-work. In particular, the greens are great. The food grill is transitioning to private management and we are optimistic about them being able to continue the good food/beverage offerings. Bottom line - if the F'burg City Gov't will get out of the way, this can become one of the premier municiple courses in Texas.
Thank you for offering all of this insightful feedback about our course! We are excited to continue maintaining and improving it to be the best golf course it can be. Looking forward to having you back in the future!
Course has improved since last time
Both the greens & fairways have improved since playing here approx. 3 years ago. I previously played within 5 days of the reopening after the makeover. Although many of the greens do not appear difficult they have subtle variations that must be learned to be conquered. I loved the tees that required clearing a hazard before the fairway continued. They force you to play golf rather than smash & hope.
Great German Garden
Very nice for a county or city course. Greens and fairways were excellent. Great place to let the wife go shop in town while you play golf if she doesn't play. Played here a long time ago when it was a 9 hole golf course. Sure has changed since then but then so has that whole community. It is not a punishing course and will reward you with a low score if you are capable. Really enjoyed my play and would recommend this course no matter what age or level you are at.
In good shape for a public course
Holes are confusing since they weave back and forth through each other. Need map of holes on back of score card and/or map showing layout of holes at the tees.
Great course
No issues on the condition of the course, very nice. All holes look and play different. Greens in great shape and the staff is very friendly.
Sandy greens
Overall course was in good shape. Greens had just been sanded. Other than that no complaints. Its definitely not a $60 golf course, sand on the greens or not.
First Time
I would go back. Course conditions and scenery made for an enjoyable day.
A pleasant surprise
A nice hidden gem, well laid out, quick greens that looked sluggish, but weren't. Only complain, no markers for 200, 150, and 100 yards out. Great otherwise.
nice layout with lots of variety
enjoyed course thoroughly and all the different challenges including blind tee shots ,elevation changes,
thick rough with lots of trees.
Greens were not in great shape but still playable.
Bitter sweet
Course in good shape except greens they were dead spots
VERY difficult to find some greens and tee boxes
Not enough signs
Actually had to guess where one of the pin was guessed wrong :(
Couldn't find 6 and 7 tee box
Short but good
Nice course for the money
I came up to visit the in-laws and play a close course would like to play boot Ranch but it's private so we enjoyed the course it was in great shape
Thanks for your review! Come on back and see us again soon!
