Scott Schreiner Municipal Golf Club
About
John Bredemus stopped off here in the 1920s to open up Kerrville’s first golf course. Originally private when it opened in 1923, the course was acquired by the city in the 1930s and the course remained public ever since.
Situated on gently rolling terrain, the course offers scenic views of the surrounding Texas hill country. R.D. Kizer and Joe Finger have had their hands in molding the layout, which features somewhat generous fairways and an interesting combination of mounded greens.
Bredemus designed the front nine, which is highlighted by the classic 592-yard par 5. This is a mean hole, with water cutting into the fairway twice and an elevated green that requires a perfect approach. The hole has character, with water along the right and an ominous-looking cliff framing the view. Another notable hole on the front is the dogleg-left No. 7, with trees dominating the left side.
The signature hole is No. 17, a 535-yard par 5. Water comes into play on the second shot and then again on the approach to the green, which is surrounded by water on three sides. A waterfall to the left of the green adds a pleasing aesthetic.
The back nine, which opened in 1977, is more forgiving than the front. The best hole is the tough, par 5 No. 17. If you survive the tee shot, water comes into play on both the second and third shots. The last shot is particularly pleasing because of the waterfall on the left side of the green.
Getting there : From I-10 west, take Hwy. 16 south and turn left on Country Club Dr.

Back nine under renovation but for the price, I didn’t mind playing the front twice. Staff always friendly. Easy check in if you book in advance.
Nice Course
The course is getting ready to close for renovations. The fairways were good. Tee boxes and greens were a little rough. The staff were great and very helpful. Nice layout with a pesky little creek running through it. I would go back.
Fun course with character
Scored an early tee time on a cooler day. The course was almost empty on an early Friday. It has something for the beginner and scratch golfers. I have enjoyed this course every time. They do seem to be fighting a wild hog issue recently, as some of the course seems a dug up in a particular area of the course. They are protecting the greens as they battle the issue and it’s not a year round thing from my experience. Definitely recommend!
Nice Course, well worth the cost!!
Drove up from Boerne to play this course for the first time. Check in was easy and folks were friendly. Beats trying to drive into San Antonio!
Needs Course Improvements
The staff here was very pleasant however the course could use some work. Teenboxes and fairways were inconsistent and lacking grass in many places. Ditto for the greens, some were okay but many others had dirt and mixed surfacing. Could be a nice course with work. Decent layout.
Great Value, Great Fun
This course is one of my favorite public courses in the Hill Country. The course is fairly open, but still demands some precision with approaches. #17 is by far one of the best holes in the area, it has the potential to swing a match every time you play it.
Mixed Reviews
Fairways were actually nice and in good shape. Greens held as well. Some of the greens had really bad scabs on them. Additionally, the holes hasn’t been moved in a while and they were rough.
But, for the money, a great value!
Hot!
Wanted to work on my game and needed a course nearby without all the traffic found this one. Price was good and able to make a pit stop at McDonalds in Comfort. Once I arrive was able to tee off. Worked on my game by moving the ball on better lies. Some Greens had missing sod so moved the ball. Tough course due to some lengths and sloping greens. Played real fast in about 3-hours, and was happy with my practiced round then headed to Starbucks!
Truly a nice venue with the coming greens redo will be great
Gives you all you want for options to test yourself. The difference from the white to gold tees is a nice change to give yourself some good scores if you’re entitled due to age. Back nine is great fun.
Front nine is a “you see what you get” except 1 and 8 which have drop offs to water crossings with tiered landing zones.
Continues to shine.
What a great value and fun place to play. Take advantage of it. Efforts being made to get the greens in superb condition. Incredibly receptive to the ball for high shots.
Greens rough
Always enjoy this course bur the greens are toast. I understand a 6+ month remodel is coming…long overdue. Looking forward to trying again next summer.
