Sharpstown Park Golf Course
About
Originally known as the Sharpstown Country Club back in the 1950s and '60s, and former host of the Houston Open, the course shut down amid financial turmoil until the city of Houston scooped it up in the late 1970s and hired Jay Riviere to renovate the layout.
With its generous fairways, the course is primarily known as a hacker-friendly track. Wayward tee shots are recoverable because of the relatively sparse tree-lined fairways. Even though there are some rather long par 4s, you'll be able to fire away with your driver on the straightaway holes.
The final stretch of golf is the best, with a few short par 4s and 3s as well as a birdie-able par 5.
Note that they refer to the net along No. 6 as the Zindler Net-it's a wire contraption installed to protect the home of local newsman Marvin Zindler, who lived near the course in the 1970s and '80s. Houstonites know Zindler for his infamous association with the famed La Grange chicken ranch.
Getting there : From Hwy 59 south take the Bell Aire Blvd. exit and turn right. When you come to Harbor Town Dr., turn right and the course is just down the road on the left side.

paid for 18 only played 9
waited 30 minutes to tee off at the turn after a 3 hour front nine....
Great Greens!
Loved the greens! The fairways are open so swing away. Good place, I will play again.
Sharps-en your game
Played this course on Turkey-day and was pleased that I did. It's a traditional links layout that flows nicely. Fairways are wide and many of the par fours challenge the driver. The greens are large and roll nicely.
Par threes are longer than most but the course is flat so the pace of play isn't too bad.
There is a enclosed Driving range and a decent putting zone.
For an old track it's better than most. I'd play it again!
GM Manager Houston
A nice golf course. Nice course condition. Easy access from community. But club employees were not so friendly.
You Get What You Pay For
The course is average. It's very cheap though. The tee boxes and fairways were not the best. But, the greens were not bad. I don't have any desire to play here again. You can find better even at this price if you shop around.
First Timer
I played the Sharpstown Park course for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Course is in good shape. There are some narrow fairways but most of the holes are fairly open. Greens were in great shape. Very good value for the money!
Course appears to drain weel as we had a storm during our round. Pace of play was a little slow before the rain but after several groups quit, pace was very good.
We will play again.
I like sharpston
It's not a top golf course, but to play in the city it's not bad. The tee boxes are rough, but the fairways, greens and bunkers are in good shape.38 bucks for a Sunday is cheep.
Sharps town
First time there, awkward parking but really nice course. Marshall/starter especially friendly. Course us tight but had an awesome time. Will do it again.
Course is in great shape. Price can't be beat.
I've recently played a couple courses around the Houston area and for the price, Sharpstown can't be beat. The course is in incredible shape right now. Greens are pristine and beautiful. Barely a single weed on the course (if you can stay in the fairway). Maybe it's not the most challenging course (no fairway bunkers, little water), but the fairways can get pretty tight on some holes and you can get into some trouble off the fairways.
I've had people laugh when I tell them I play at Sharpstown, but the laugh is on them. This place is great.
Worth a revisit
Having not played this course in 24 years, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I didn't expect much. I was very pleasantly surprised. It's one of the few courses in Houston that actually overseeds, which means it might be in better condition in the winter than the summer. Nevertheless, the greens were better than they are at Memorial -- much better, and the par-70 layout is much tougher than people give it credit for. Combine that with a green fee of around $30, and you've got great value on a course that'll keep you interested.
Fabulous Greens, Among Best Values For Your Money
In 30 years of playing golf in and around Houston, I had never played at Sharpstown until September. For about $33, this open design proved to be a fair test and an outstanding value for the dollar.
I was told by a friend the greens had been re-done and were in good shape. My assessment is they are in great condition, very smooth and quick. If you hit a quality putt, it will likely find the bottom of the cup. Tees and fairways are challenging, but not painfully so. It is not a 7,400-yard, championship design, but more likely a solid layout suited to a scramble or skins game. It is not a pushover.
If you hit the ball straight and can putt, you will score well. Long hitters may have to throttle down on the 300-yard drivers here at times. The rough and trees are not overwhelming for a tournament player, but they do encourage the fairway-bound golfers among us. I shot in the 80s and holed a number of putts from 6-15 feet due to the smooth putting surfaces that were firm yet receptive to short irons.
I will return to Sharpstown. It made my day to play a course with scoring opportunities and greens good enough and fast enough to test your steady hands.
I love quality!!
HONEST REVIEWER HERE!! Ive been playing for a yr and I usually shot in the mid 90s to 80s. Absolutely worth 30 plus bucks to play!!! Well maintained and a very long and open course (bring your hybrids). I've played at most houston area courses and this is by far the best maintained! Better than blackhorse the so call best course in houston. U wont find too many hazards and its surrounded by an older community which gives off a very relaxing atmosphere. Every single shot I took I didnt find hard pan underneath my ball and all my lies were hittable. Please play this course if u r an out of towner so u can leave houston on a super positive note
