South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course
About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

Golfer Reviews
This course could offer some better teetimes earlier in the day
I have played the course before my three sons have not. We all enjoyed the course did not like how backed up it was the starter letting people off to early otherwise we had a great day
Very friendly staff
Nice course for the average player. Greens rolled very well and fairways in good shape to hit out of.
Best course in the area
Nice course layout, decent shape, nice greens, nice club house, etc.
Great Course!
Great course when the weather is nice. It had been raining for the past few days, but the course had minimal water on the greens and fairways.
One of the best in the valley
I played this course many times over the years and it is one of the best in the valley. Traps have real sand, greens are smooth and fairways are in good shape. Plus has challenging layout
Good value through GolfNow. People were friendly, course was in really good shape especially now that cart paths have been replaced or repaired. The day we
Played pace of play was good.
Beautiful
I have played this course several times. It is in the best shape in years. Real sand in bunkers and nice greens. Probably the best course for 50 miles.
Afternoon Golf
Great views.
Very nice course with great views in the front 9. Nice greens. Not too long.
Good
I have been playing the course for 10+ years. The course is almost back to 2009 condition. The front nine is done and back nine just needs work on Holes 10, 14, 16, 17, and 18. Bunkers And cart paths throughout are the best ever.
The #1 cheap thing to do is cut down the bushes on Hole 2 and Hole 9 so a player can see a great hole in front of them.
Great course Friendly People
This is a nice course for the money. Not crowded during the week. They even have water on the cart for you.
Summer fun
We had an excellent time. The course was in top shape and the scenery was awesome!!
Great course
Front 9 especially has some scenic signature holes on the water. Great conditions. The white tees are perfect for those who don’t crush drives. Great layout with fairway bunkers.
My Absolute Favorite!
I've played resort golf in Florida, California, and all over, and this course is by far my favorite. I've played here for years, and the course is always in great shape, Because of the coastal breezes, it never truly plays the same. The views are amazing whether you are on the bayfront holes or on a manmade water hazard. I highly recommend South Padre Island Golf Club for anyone coming to the area. It's by far the best course in the entrie Rio Grande Valley!!
BEST RESORT COURSE IN SOUTH TEXAS
Without a doubt, this course is the best layout, most playable, most scenic, and best overall course in south Texas. The only course in this area that has true greens. Waterfront view on several holes. Forced carries for every tee box, but reduce as you go forward. Will be back. Soon.
Surprised at the Beauty
SPI is clearly a diamond in the valley. Worth every penny.
Sunday golf
Had an excellent time with a friend. The staff was very friendly and we truly enjoyed the golf course. Can’t wait to get back to playing this course.
