Bay Forest Golf Course
About
Amongst the chemical plants, refinery towers, and wood-lined waterways of La Porte lies the 18-hole Jay Riviere municipal known as Bay Forest. Riviere's design opened in 1988, featuring a tight front nine that opens up on the lake-dominated back side. Water is in play on 16 of 18 holes. Because of La Porte's proximity to the Gulf, the coastal winds make this a long course.
Despite its tight nature, the front nine offers a few nice birdie opportunities, including the short par 3 No. 6. This hole generally only requires a 9 iron to carry the bunker fronting the green.
On the back, the par 5 No. 10 is one of the most birdie-friendly holes on the course. It's followed by the signature No. 11-a great-looking dogleg right that bends around a pond to a well-bunkered green. The play with the approach on 11 is to leave it below the hole.
The par 5 No. 18 is a challenging finisher that requires good golf shots into the wind and the accuracy to avoid the water that sneaks into the fairway in the landing area from the right. The second shot must carry water and a bunker, and the recommended play on the approach is to keep it on the right side of the green.
Getting there : From Hwy. 45 south, take the 610 Loop north. When you come to Hwy. 225 head east and take the Pasadena exit. Turn right, find Hwy. 146 and go south (right). Next, get off at the Fairmont Pkwy. exit and turn left. When you get to South Broadway St., turn right and drive 1 mile to the course. The clubhouse is on the right side of the street.

Still a fun course
I’ve played Bay Forest probably 50 times in my life. I’ve played it during seeding, aeration, drought, and rain. Water come into play on 14 holes or so...and I’ve been in every one of them at some point. It’s a fun course. Arguably not as “cool” or “challenging” as some courses with a similar price point, but it’s fun and challenging...and that extra money goes to fund outstanding course/turf management. Great food at the turn, cold beverages, overall a great time. I’ll continue to play this course for years.
Good Course
I’ve always enjoyed this course, I like the layout, it has some interesting holes. The front 9 is a par 35 and the back is a par 37. This day the greens were below normal, they had recently been punched, so it was difficult to get a smooth roll. I would give it a few weeks to line out, if the greens come back, it’s a great course.
The course bested me!
Will definitely play again NOW that I know where NOT hit some shot since this was my first round here. Truly a shot makers course which is very good! Enjoyed the track and challenge.
When it’s in good shape, it’s great.
In good shape right now but can be a bit rugged at times. They’re punching it next week so let’s hope it comes back strong.
Nice layout, great shape
I’ve played here a few times over the past year so I wasn’t surprised but I was pleased that it hadn’t changed. Very nice coastal layout. Enough water to add some character. Fairways and greens in very good shape. Ftont desk and snack bar staff make you feel welcome. All at a great rate.
greens good shape
the course was in good shape and the greens were running fast. finished in 4 hrs.
NICE FAST GREENS !
Kelly, Greg and team are Great guys! Always welcoming.
Always in Great Shape
This is our go to course in the Houston area for the price. Always in good shape , greens fast and true. Most courses comparable in price seem to struggle with the condition of their greens due to the dry and windy weather this spring. Fairways will only get better with some needed rain. Fun course to play.
Employees suck
The main dude charged me too much for my green fee because I live in Laporte. I told him about his mistake he said no it's right. My friend came in we golf together he was changed the same as I was but he doesn't live in Laporte. I brought it to the rude dude behind the counter he then said he made a mistake yeah right. Then he goes to grab my credit card out of my hand not very smart. I have played here for years but never again because of this one rude dude. Stupid
overbooked
The course was not that impressive but it wasn't the worst I've seen either. The staff bunched all of us GolfNow people together regardless of how we wanted to play. We had to start on the back nine because the 1st tee had a long line because of overbooking tee times. Then we had to be finished on that nine by 2 hours with a packed course. It took way too long to finish the course. Then they closed the front for maintenance so you had to wait on the back nine for slow play. Several people didn't even finish their rounds including myself. Didn't like the overall experience from the pairing's to the speed of play.
Always a good place to play
I’ve been playing here for 20yrs and the course is always in good shape. My only knock is the pace of play. They usually have the whole course packed. I’d like to see the Marshall push some of the slower groups on some occasions so we could finish a round in under 4.5hrs. I plan on coming back many more times. A little far to drive to but at the golfnow hot deal rate it was worth it.
Great Track and Challenge
The golf course layout is pretty solid. There is lots of water here but the fairways are more than wide enough. If you are a long hitter off the tee, beware of a few of the holes that water cuts through them... You'll hit a beautiful drive, right down the middle, right into the dad gum water. The greens were in great shape and were running fast, making putts or missing puts will be up to you. Overall a good course, will definitely play it again.
Not bad
The course is in good shape. The first par 5 was cartpath only, it would of been nice to know that when we tee’d off. Overall not too bad, a couple of the guests in the group behind us could benefit from some golf edict.
Good Muni style track
Fun play out here. Winds can be a challenge off of Galveston Bay. Greens were dry and fast, rolled true. Crowned up green complexes were difficult to chip from at times, as there were many tight lies and to negotiate. Overall lots of fun for the money, and will return.
