really still
this is september 2022, i stopped playing this course back when they reinstated no water on course to drink
or wet a towel. My bad figured water back after almost a year or more, really they still think you might get covid
from water container on course. wont be back till i see in writing water jugs back 93 deg and 45% humidity and know wind not right
Great fun course
Course is pretty short but has some outstanding par 3 holes over water. Fairways in really good shape
Pleasantly Surprised
Overall a very nice course for the price, I would recommend to anyone in the Temple area and would certainly play again. The golf carts have the iPad like screens with hole information which is very helpful, but the geofencing is a little frustrating. I don’t mind the rules, but it would be nice if the screen told you it was a cart path only hole instead of having to find out because your cart gets disabled. The only other less than ideal part of this course is that hole layout is not clear. There is very little (if any) signage between holes, and it many cases you drive past 1-2 tee boxes before you actually get to the next hole. I think 4-5 is exceptionally confusing.
Best and only option in temple
Relatively boring course layout. The routing is extremely confusing.that being said, it’s in good condition now and greens are rolling well. If this wasn’t the only public course in temple I’d probably never play it
A Sunday Round
If you don't mind a slower pace of play and it was a Sunday then you'll enjoy Sammons, I know we did.
Do not play here at twilight!!!
The course layout is really cool, and it was in fairly good conditions for being in a drought. What really rubbed us the wrong way is that by 7:30, probably 45 minutes before the Sun even set, the guy at the club house came out onto the course and removed all of the flag sticks from the holes. We teed off at 4:20, and finished before 8. Ok our last two holes, the flag sticks were removed so we had no idea where to aim. The golf carts had gps, so it was not like they couldn’t see there were still three groups behind us still playing as well.
Not up to par
Greens had been recently airated, plus could nit play 3 holes sue to maintenance watering greens.
Great Course - Details Not So Good
This is the course I play most often. The course is in really great shape. The greens were redone around two years ago and they are really good.
There are some details lacking in playing Sammons. There is very little drinking water on the course. We bring our own water and electrolyte mixture - it is very hot and the course needs to put drinking water out. This is a COVID holdover that must be corrected.
It does not get dark until after 8pm and they sell 18 hole starts up to 5pm. But they remove the flags at around 7pm. NOT GOOD. Why do you even need to remove the flags? I guess locals have stolen some of them in the past. I do not like paying twilight rate and then having no flags for the last 6-7 holes.
Marshall
Before we took the course the Marshall indicated that the 2 some in front of us where new to the course and moving slow, I told him no problem that my group had a couple of slow players also. We where still on the 1st hole when he came out and told me to just start playing best ball and to speed things up. At this point we are waiting for the group ahead of us and the group ahead of them on every shot we could not at all have gone any faster. He did not even bother to look at either group and see what was our hold up. Needless to say it upset me , and ruined our day. Please at least look at the big picture and see what the real hold up was, it sure as heck was not us, it might have been the 2 some in front of us or the 4 some in front of them all and I mean all hitting two balls each.
Potentially very good
I played Simmons for the first time. It was frustrating too say the least. The tee boxes are barely distinguishable, and instead of the traditional tee markers, they have placed a foot long circular stick and painted the end to identify the box your on. Outside of the yardage sign, it is difficult to even determine the direction you are heading. Signage from green to the next tee doesn’t exist. The GPS on your cart will help a bit, but had I not been paired up with someone familiar with the course, I might still be out there trying to find the 13th tee box. The layout is crazy, with a front nine that plays very short and a back nine at more normal length. Back to back par 5’s exist on the back nine, another oddity. As for the course itself, it could be really good. Texas has been in a drought and that has impacted the overall condition, but the course was in pretty good shape. Greens were a bit bumpy, but not bad. Green fees were low, $35 with cart included. If you have never played it before, make sure you are paired up with someone who has. Otherwise, not bad at all.
Average Course
I do like that the City of Temple has a golf course. I do however with it cost less. I would play a lot more if it didn't run me a $50.00 bill every time I play.
With that said the cost of the course does not show in the maintenance. The bridges and cart paths need repair. The course had some areas that could use dirt, grass, drainage and green repair. I also don't think I have ever had a good cart when playing here.
All in all, its a golf course, close to home, and easily accessible.
Need Water Stations
They need to set up water stations when it is middle summer in Texas. Cart lady said she kept running out of water before getting to us, plus we barley seen her driving around. Maybe carry less beer and more water on 108 degree days.
