Not the best
We booked this last minute to play with my son and his friend at college. I didn’t have any of my clubs / equipment but called and they said the had house clubs we could use. They were all vintage! Half were lefty, and the other half were things my grandfather donated. I ended up playing with a 3 wood, 7, 3, 68 wedge, and a putter that was donated from the local putt putt course (but they were free so I digress).
The first hole the starter pairs 3 of us up with a 2 some…. Yes he started us with 5. Half way down the fairway he came and told us to pick up our balls because people were waiting?? Dude there’s 5 of us and the tee box in front of us was having a cart party anyway.
The course itself was ok / average. Although the signage from hole to hole was non existent and more like playing in a maze to get to the next tee box. How hard is it to spray paint some arrows on the cart path or but some signage up? The front 9 was poorly designed and multiple times golfers from other tee boxes were hitting in our general direction…. Scary. The back 9 was nice, wide open, picturesque, but we only were able to play 4 of the holes (our time restraints).
The cart girl and the pro shop staff were really friendly, and most of the golfers we ran into were great.
I’d say that this is a good course if you’re out drinking with buddies, don’t care about keeping score, or want to teach your young child. Other than that, I wouldn’t recommend. (Maybe I’m spoiled from AZ golf courses though)
Confusing layout and hole markers
I lost more balls on this course than any other course I have played on. Suggest making it slightly easier for the average player.
My biggest problem was getting lost when trying to find the next hole, especially the chaotic mess of unmarked pathways that converge around Hole #5. This can be solved by adding hole direction signs and markers. Suggest painting direction arrows on the path, and sign posts pointing the way to each hole at the Hole #5 convergence area.
Great course! Need better tee time management!
I love playing at Sammons, however almost every time I got I pair up with someone just to keep a pace of play since they don’t really enforce a foursome rule. I think if they grouped more people together the. Everything would Be great!
Nice course
You have some challenging holes over water but overall a nice course to play
No water or ball cleaners on course.
Greens were in pretty good shape, but fairways were mainly weeds and dirt. Also, there was no water on the course or ball cleaners.
signage
it was often hard to find the next hole due to cart paths crossing each other etc. Needs some basic signs pointing the way to the next hole.
Poor Quality Course
The course is very congested. Trash all over. The tee boxes were unkept. The greens had very many imperfections all over. The course was very muddy. The worst of it was the pace of play. Tee time was at 0930, but didn’t get to tee off until about 0945. Took about five hours to play 15 holes. I was so frustrated that I left without playing the last three holes. They were letting groups of five play that was slowing everyone down. Marshalls need to do a better job of enforcing pace of play. The group behind mine left without finishing as well. Would not recommended this course. The only positive is that the staff was very friendly.
Off season
The flow of the course is very difficult to follow with NO signs to direct you. Cart path crossed through other holes point of aim. Greens were in bad shape (off season) fairways were dead grass (off season). Carts were geo-tracked and kept going dead when you were in a restricted area even when you were still on the cart path.
Yardage not very well marked. No stakes in the fairway for 200/150/100 markers. Only seen a few markers at all,
Tee box markers were little pieces of logs about 3” diameter and hard to tell what color they were. Course gets heavy play and with the holes so close together the pace of play is SLOW!
Par 3 #17 was nice over the water,
Disappointed
The overall condition of the course was good, especially for a municipal course. We teed off at 3:00 pm. Play was extremely slow. All carts have GPS but the course is cart path only. The carts will shut down if you venture 10 yards off the cart path. It would have been quicker to walk. Staff removed the flags from the greens at 5:40 pm then instructed us that we have to turn our carts in by 5:45. There was still an hour of daylight left. This was frustrating as we only got to play 11 holes (we finally skipped ahead of the group in front of us). Doubt we will go back and definitely can’t recommend the course for afternoon tee times.
The Good, Bad and Ugly... HEAVY on the Ugly
I have not played this course in years. My Daughter needed to play this course prior to her tournament, that is the only reason I stayed.
Good - Greens rolled true and were receptive. They had a few none plugs growing up, but nothing to worry about.
Bad - Tee boxes had sticks for tee markers and they were not on boxes. The fairways are rutted and they need attention.
Ugly - STAFF - if I had not prepaid and my daughter needed to play, I would have left. They double-booked two tee times, the pro-shop attendant was in a bad mood and was an unpleasant person to talk to. The grill was closed and they had no drink cart.
Course marking - YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THE NEXT HOLE IS... simple signs would have made it easier... but signage on the course is non-existant.
The carts had a nice display system on them and had geofences, THEY DID NOT ANNOUNCE which holes were cart path only, there were no signs on the course and the starter did not tell us which holes were cart path only. I had to push a cart off of a fairway because it would not move.
This course can be great... but right now... it is nowhere near a pleasant place to play.
Terrible, Terrible pace of play
I have played Sammons many times and 2/22 was by far the worst experience I have ever had at this course. I had a 10:50am tee time which I arrived at 10:40 and was at the first tee in time. As I was driving up there was a group of 4 already on the tee. A group of 4 behind them and another group of 4 behind them. Then it was me. I waited 15 minutes before asking the starter if I could just go off the back since I was a single and no one was on 9 or 10. She promptly said no, that I would have to wait. I waited another 10 minutes and I looked behind me and 2 more groups of 2 showed up waiting. It was 11:15 at this point and still have 2 groups of 4 infront of me. I returned to the club house and got a refund. The guy in the club house said they were really busy. I never saw anyone on 9 or 10 the entire time I was there. I dont run the course so I just asked for a refund and left. Love the course because I live in Temple, but it has seriously gone down hill lately. Hope someone actually reads this from sammons and realizes there needs to be a change. Also sally or whatever her name is that is the normal starter could be alittle nicer and smoke alittle less. I know its public but not everyone wants to smell smoke while waiting.
Things need attention
One thing that would be pretty easy and low cost but provide a massive improvement is to improve the tee box markers. I’ve only played here twice and it’s very confusing and easy to get lost and many of the tee box markers have paint that has warn away so you often cannot tell which tee box it is. It feels like they assume everyone that plays there is a regular.
