Avoid Trying to Play Twilight Rounds Here
I played Sammons with my brothers on the afternoon of 8/7. We booked a tee time for 3:40 pm assuming we would have plenty of time to finish before dark. The course is about what you would expect for a cheaper municipal course - playable but a little rough around the edges. The greens on the front 9, which had recently been aerated and were pretty bumpy, but we would have not complained about the round at all had it not been for the lack of customer service we received.
I gave a 1 star rating for 2 reasons:
#1 - there was absolutely no way to get any water or other beverage on the course for the back 9 which is simply inexcusable in Texas in August. There is no water on the course which is indicated by signs in the clubhouse, but they still ask that you not bring personal coolers onto the course. To make matters worse, when we made the turn (at round 5:15 pm), we were told in the clubhouse that they could not sell us any beverages because they had already closed up the grill area so we were left with the decision to play the back 9 with nothing to drink in 95 degree weather or leave early. Even for a slow afternoon, this is unacceptable customer service and golfers should be warned about this and encouraged to bring their own coolers if this is going to happen.
#2 - course employees began collecting flags from the greens at about 7:15 pm, about 1 hour before sunset and a full 30 min before the time carts were required to be returned according to signs in the clubhouse. We were left to play the last 3 holes with no pins for no reason other than that clearly course employees were hoping to go home early. If the course wants to close early, tee times should no be booked after a certain time or there should be warnings issued to those who are unfortunate enough to try to play here in the afternoon / evening.
Nice Course
Tee locations make zero sense and are poorly marked, but the course is fun with good greens and lotd of water to contend with. Great course for the price.
Great Course - Best Greens around
They are doing a great job with this golf course. The greens are in great shape. A few have spots on them, but overall they are nice, fast and roll well.
The pace is really slow because 3 other courses within 30 miles are in terrible shape....one being unplayable. Everyone is coming to Sammons which makes for some slow play.
Rough around the edges, but challenging
Very slow pace for the day, the greens and fairways could use some love. The course is challenging and quite fun. Definitely a decent public course.
Confusing
Course layout is confusing. No signs directing you to the next tee box and no map provided.
Strategy course
Course layout was good. A lot of water. Sand traps not in real good shape. I really like how the course required finesse. Maybe only used my driver 4-5 times on 18 holes. Very reasonably priced.
Water every where/ sand for greens
The water hazard amount for this course is extremely high. The layout of this course is very confusing and difficult to know where to go next. The greens were all sand and couldn’t figure out where my ball marks were. I was disappointed in this course over all.
Fun course but slightly confusing
A short course that has great scenery even in the middle of the city. Layout of the holes was confusing and I got lost a couple of times but everything else was fantastic, will definitely be back.
Great would go again
This course is very good for the money, the greens where a bit on the slow side but it was hard to find a bad spot of fairway, great layout but it is very easy to get lost if it is your first time.
Good Shape - Very Busy
We just got past two solid weeks of rain. The course has finally dried out enough to be good again. The greens have recovered nicely and are in good shape.
I have two complaints: too many beginners were on the course. I realize we want everyone to play, especially on a public course...but it really made it difficult. I counted two groups of six - playing best ball with 3 to a team. If these were solid players it would have been ok playing superball...but they were really slow!
A second complaint I have is the computer-assisted carts. IF a hole is cart path only they should have the screen popup as you approach the tee and beep: Cart Path ONLY. It would allow us to get 20 feet off the cart path, then it would start beeping and going at a snail's pace. Very annoying.
