Hole 18's View from Green Photo submitted by PulsarX on 02/10/2018
First time visitor
While visiting my Son at Ft Hood, I decided to get in a round of golf and found Sammons in Temple, Texas (about 35 mins away) so decided to give it a try. Pace of play might have been an issue as there was four carts full of teenagers getting ready to play. Looked over the course and saw a window in opportunity to start on the 10th with two other singles. That probably saved me from some slow play.
Course conditions were okay, nothing to get excited or hateful about. Greens looked okay and played faster than what I normally see in the San Francisco Bay Area. Takes me a few holes to get use to as I would blow my first putt by the hole … Course layout was nice
I was lucky enough to book through a hot deal special so my green fee was reduced. Clubhouse staff was friendly.
Make that trip to Temple
Austin courses are full and expensive, and this gem is just sitting there wanting to be played!! Still early in the season but really nice fairways. Greens still dealing with minor weeds, but did not impact our play. Lots of water to protect the course, so come prepared. Marshalls kept things moving and food was tasty. Will be back soon!!
Really good golf course. Can be tricky to navigate especially going to hole 12 could be better marked.
Awful pace of play
Marshall did nothing but sit at the tee box, let a foursome cut in line on #10 when we had a group of two which slowed it down even more.
Did not even try to get groups to pick up the pace of play.
Much Improved
A year ago, I would have a much different opinion of Sammons. In the last year, the course has come a long way. It is short so if you are looking for a course to test your mid iron game, you may want to go elsewhere. The back side is odd with 3 par fives, 3 par fours and 3 par threes. The course layout is hard to navigate as there is almost no signage to direct you to the next tee. All of that said, things have improved a lot. The course condition is quite good, especially considering it is late December. Much better than a year ago. The greens have gone dormant and they are as fast as glass, but they putt true. Recently, brand new GPS enabled golf carts were added. There is still a glitch on the GPS system, but they work and it’s a nice add. Sammons is a challenging layout given the short length, with a lot of water to deal with. I would recommend it to anyone. Terrific value for the money.
Can be better
The slowest ace of play course in the area. Where’s the marshal? A few signs would be very helpful - difficult to navigate. Lots of water holes. The snack bar is good though but the range balls were grassy and had dirt all over.
Horrible
Was paired with another person pace of place was painfully slow, after the 9 the other guy left and I got paired with a 5some.. so 6 of us total. Horrible pace of play and couldn’t get a refund. Please don’t go here if you’re slightly good at golf
Signs and car paths
My wife and I started playing golf this year, and Sammons is one of our closest municipal courses. We've probably completed the front nine a solid ten times and the whole 18 twice. We noticed a recurrent problem with people new to the course: a significant lack of signage to direct golfers, especially between holes 4 to 5 and 11 to 12. The path between 4 and 5 is legitimately dangerous due to the steep decline and broken, uneven concrete. Besides these relatively easy fixes, this affordable course is moderately challenging for beginners, but it does tend to be crowded and frequently backed up.
Fairways
I’ve been playing Sammons for decades. PLEASE get the Florida sinkholes repaired.
First time playing since they've done it the greens were in unbelievable shape Fairways for good highly recommend this place
