Good and Bad

Fairways & greens are in good condition. However, we spent a lot of time looking for a ball anytime someone left the fairway. The primary rough is much higher than the ball. Also, there are large mounds (10' high or more) which often block your view so you can't tell where your ball lands. Then, if you are lucky enough to find your ball, your lie may be extreme do to the tall rough & the mounds. Too many blind shots and lost balls made for a less than favorable experience.

An overwhelmed gem

This is a wonderful golf course. Conditions are immaculate - fast, smooth greens; turf-dense fairways; sharply-cut bunkers. Definitely a diamond in the rough, and by "rough," I mean industrial parks and truck-repair facilities. It is an amazing oasis. HOWEVER, the average player here is not good. In fact, the average player is terrible, which means you're looking at 2:30 (at least) to play nine. If you have your own group and accept that it is going to be an all-day event, then you're okay. If you're expecting a "quick 9," you're going to be sorely disappointed. From what I've been told, they cut back the fescue rough to about 3-4 inches, but finding balls in it is still difficult (which is a cause of the slow play). And echoing comments on #8, the necessary carry from the tee is ridiculous.

A Work in Progress - it could be a GREAT place, BUT

I grew up in Jersey City and learned the game over 40 years ago on this property when it was a driving range and pitch and putt. I hit balls under the watchful eye of Milky, the local milk delivery man. Living over an hour away now, I finally found time to get up there to visit my old stomping grounds. I was not disappointed at all, the course is in great shape, almost immaculate, with greens running as fast or faster than some private clubs and the holes are very well designed. The greens are larger than average size with lots of undulations. One concern about course condition would be fairway divots, I used a cart and it was equipped with divot mix, but many people walk this course and I see tons of fairway divots which may become a problem if not addressed by maintenance. So, it has the making of being a GREAT place, BUT there are some potential pitfalls. In a couple spots the holes are too close together so errand shots might appear from other holes. It is definitely not an easy course for beginners, way too tough. Several blind shots, a couple narrow fairways and heavy rough / fescue will kill beginners. Not nearly enough yardage markers in the fairways. Not really sure why they did not invest in getting a good yardage book produced while we await the GPS companies to map the course, depths of greens would be very helpful. I also recommend management pay a visit to Hyatt Hills in Clark (another great 9 hole course) and see how (with their large greens) they have two flags on every green, giving those who play 18 holes a new set of pins to shot for on each hole. One big problem was an employee attitude, the starter Joe. When I asked if the flags were colored (red, white, blue??) for front, back, middle - he said "No, we do not have that stuff here, just eyeball the pin location?". Trust me, a few of these greens are 40 yards from front to back and eyeballing just does not work for the serious golfer. Would it really be too much to ask to use colored flags and help us know where the flags are on these big greens which are sometimes attacked with blind approaches. In summary, this is a MUST play for all serious golfers especially for Hudson County residents (great rates) or if (as a out of county person like myself) you can get a HOT DEAL at golfnow.com. Here are my tips for how to play each hole. (1) fairly easy opening hole, but approach can be a blind shot and green is huge, (2) nice uphill long par 3 with a green about 45 yards deep, (3) be very careful on second shot layup, fairway is very narrow around the 100 yard marker, second shot is blind, and green is very wide but not very deep, (4) short par 3 but very undulating, left to right slope is severe, (5) hardest hole on course and plays into prevailing wind, i might consider playing this from tips as a par 5 and play number 8 from the new special front tees as a par 4, (6) be careful on approach, do not be long, water is very close to back of the green. (7) two tiered green but very little room off back, do not be long here either, (8) also plays into prevailing wind and now has optional tees to play it as a par 4 from about 375 yards, why? because the forced carry into the wind is too much to handle for many golfers, green is very deep here too, (9) nice finishing hole with a great view. I hope 2016 brings improvements to this new course which only opened in June 2015. It has great potential, greens were an outstanding challenge. I played 5 holes from black tees and 4 from gold, I hit 6 greens in regulation and three putt three times. i also want to note that there is no food available but they recently passed the health inspection so food will be coming within next month or so. Will be back soon!

Great design.

Played 7 or 8 times here. Love the layout and views are awesome! The fairways still need to grow in a bit and the greens are cut a little high. The rough is deep and it's tough to advance the ball (if you can find it). Still, I think its great and will certainly play here again.
Lots of fun...

Nice 9 Holes

The course is beautiful. I hope it stays that way as it seems to get a ton of sun and play. Sometimes it's tough to believe there's a course this nice in JC.

If you're a beginner or slice your drives I recommend bringing a ton of balls! A lot of fescue.

The staff is very nice. Overall a nice 9 holes in JC, can't beat that.

Jersey City Gem

Not the best general location for a golf course--but then this oasis. What a pleasant surprise. From the first hello at the sign in everything was just right. The T's, the Greens, The Fairways, close to perfect. Don't know how long it will be this way, but enjoy it now. It took a few mishits to understand the other comments of ball grabbing grass. Yikes!. My fault-not the course. "Will be back with the boys for 18"

My home away from home

Since I am very new to the sport, This is actually the first course I have ever played. Being that I'm a new I hear a lot of experienced golfers say that this course is not easy. I play on this course at least once a week. It gets easier every time I play it. It also has made it very easy for me to play other courses. You will lose a lot of balls if you do not know what you are doing, or if you are unaware of the terrain. Don't kill yourself looking for balls you will not find. Pace of play can be slow. The staff are extremely amazing and cool. If you want to play 18 holes you have to repeat the first 9 being that there is only 9 holes on the course. Hole #1 hit slightly to your left. Hole #2 is a breeze . Hole #3 straight drive, and then you have a nice shot over the edge of some water that can be a challenge. Hole #4 is a fun par 3. Hole #5 Straight drive up the middle and you should be set sail. Hole #6 is very challenging due to the blind spots . Hole #7 is one of my favorites and one of the holes i play best on. Its tricky as well. Hole #8 is what i like to call the MAN SHOT . A nice straight drive over a pond. I have started to gain control of this hole.It can be intimidating. #Hole 9 is another par 3 that is very fun. The pins get changed frequently and the greens bring lots of variety to do so. There is no trees . If you hit off course pray that you don't hit another golfer on another hole lol. Great Course. I have played on several courses since i have caught the fever. This course is good to go.

One of a kind

An experience like no other. Wonderful city views of Newark, The Pulaski Skyway and other bridges, the bay, boats and The World Trade Center. Had a pleasant round with wonderfully kept fairways and greens. A very slow foursome in front of us at 3 but they let us play through and our twosome finished nine in well under 2 hours. I live in VT but this round of city golf was one of my most enjoyable all year.

Challenging new course!

I was able to book this course same day on Golfnow which was very accommodating as I wanted to get out and play. This course was pretty well kept, good amount of divots in the fairways but the greens were nice. Some holes were pretty challenging especially the par 5's. There is a good amount of sand traps and rough/tall grass so you have to be on point! Fun course overall with different scenery as opposed to some of the courses up north or out west.

Beautiful views, not for beginners.

This was my first time playing this course & only my fifth time on a course period. Not very forgiving & you will lose a lot of balls in the rough. You need to be straight with you tee shots. Very hilly, you will lose sight of the flag easily. Fescue everywhere. 8th hole is an absolute nightmare. Good luck out there. Keep them straight & long

Metamorphosis

In the last 10-15 years Hudson County gave birth to two private golf courses, both of which too expensive except for the 1%. Hudson was the only county with no public golf course. This all changed with the opening of the Skyview Gc. This was a flat area with soil infused with toxic waste, so bad that ground underneath was on fire for years. It took the company that puts oil well fires out to kill the fire. What has been built is simply amazing. They must have brought millions of cubic yards of soil to make this course. It was worth it. Though the area is confined it does not feel that way, for the most part when you play the course you see only the hole you are playing. The mounding and the elevation changes make it so. I should mention the course is 9 holes, 3 par 4's, 3 par 5's and 3 par 3's. I played shortly after the course opened and the conditions were superb. There are 5 sets of tees making it playable for most golfers. It is too early for a slope rating but I would suggest it would be in the 120's. The views are terrific the Pulaski Skyview is the dominant view you also see the new WTC and the Empire State Bld. from various holes. Hole # 5 is a longe par 4 I think the toughest hole, the first par 5 dogleg left is treacherous with the second shot, # 8 requires two water carries to green. If you play 18 holes play from different tee to make it more interesting.
