The Royal
Course in excellent shape. Fairway to green excellent. Range a cart drive away and up stairs. Hitting from mats. For an older player like me (70), the course doesn’t lend itself to walking. Even with cart, lots of walking up and down hills. Fairways challenging as are the greens, which are very challenging but roll true. Course really makes you think with lots of possibilities for trouble off the tee due to topography and elevation changes. It’s the kind of course one really has to get to know to play it well. So it breaks down to preference but any way you look at it, it’s one of our local jewels.
Meh
The course has potential, but it may not mature, within my lifetime. Terrific staff. I cannot speak to the quality of the restaurant (did not eat there). Overall,
I would say that it's a good place to try.
I prefer Edinburgh for the price/golfing experience, however.
Amazing
Just go play the course and you will not be disappointed.
Not For Novice
Great course if you’ve played here a few times. Big fairways and small rough area. The greens are tricky and you have to know where to approach in order to have a decent chance at par. It will take a few rounds before the lower scores come.
A fair test. Beautiful layout, especially Annika’s nine.
A couple of holes seem out of place but overall a very enjoyable track.
2nd Time
Great design, something for everyone, but greens overused and needs to be aerated from the frequency of play.
The New Tartan
I played the old Tartan Park (previously the 3M company course) for over 1000 times. This is a revamp of the land and the course conditions. The conditions are now near perfect. The fairways, greens and tees are bent grass without a single weed in sight. The bunkers are tour quality and I managed to stay out of all of them. The practice area is ample and first class. There are 5 separate tees. The carts have a built in hill break and are smooth. The carts lack GPS, I have my own range finder so this did not bother me. That is all the good.
Do not expect to always have a perfectly flat lie in the fairway. The fairways have some contours, Most if the sight lines are great. However on the back nine there are a few times when you can not see the group ahead of you and need to wait longer. I agree with other that have commented on the large contours of the greens. The round took about 4 and 1/2 hours to complete teeing off at 1:40 on a Tuesday.
The 15th hole is suppose to be a shortish par 4 of about 280 yards. It appears that many golfers have hit balls in the houses on the left and most tee boxes were closed creating a 165 yard hole, what I consider to be a par 3. Hole 16 is also a par 3, holes 17 and 18 are par 5s. My suggestion would be to move the tee back on the 13th hole and make it into a par 5 to reestablish a par 72.
My one other gripe is the scorecard. It is extremely basic and not of the quality I expected. I would prefer suggestions on which tee to play based on average drive distance. I would prefer to have pictures of each hole with a pro tip about how to play the hole.
All in all a great and memorable round of golf.
Friendly staff and excellent conditions
This course provides a glimpse into excellent design from professional players. Great value and community.
