linksy with an abundance of water Photo submitted by MarkMolyneux on 03/11/2020
St. Anne's Club, Middletown, DE
The young man in the pro shop could not have been any nicer! The fairways and greens were in excellent shape; however the tee boxes were weeds and the rough was unfair - long thick crabgrass and weeds. Did not care for all the blind shots - if you were not in the fairway, your ball was lost, even if it was only a few feet off. The moguls around every tee box were unnecessary - climb up the mogul and then down just to get to the tee box. Lots of long carries; no ratings on the card. Won't be back.
links type enjoyable to play
Greens very good tees are not great but you are using tees no problem the rest of the course is great. For 36.00 dollars you won't find another course for twice the money has good you won't be disappointed.
Hardest green in TriState
Course is still growing and the older it gets the better it will be. Super fast combined with some questionable pin placements You definitely have to play several time to learn where not to be on theses greens if you want to score well. Played with two single digit handicappers and they struggles on greens. Can’t imagine what a weekend warrior does on them. Might explain the slow play.
Admin stubborness
This course and staff is wonderful and a hidden gem. The only problem is a certain stubbornness too accommodate the players. I have played this recently about 20 times and recommended friends to come play. And I am over 70 and NEED at least a small bucket of balls to warm up. To date I have had use of the range 3 TIMES. There is always something that fouls up the range and its pitiful customer service. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!
St Anne’s sweat fest.
1st timer at the links & chose the hottest day of the year to play (95) w/ my son. Many elevated greens and lots of water hazards. Tees were a bit beat up but functional , some fairway burnout in spots but we just got thru July & August. Greens were fine , rolled well , and lots of hand watering was going on during our round but not affecting play. I’ll be back when it gets cooler out .
Slope + Fast Greens = Impossible
I can't complain about the course conditions as they have done a lot to enhance the loop. I played here a few weeks earlier and the challenge level was about right for intermediate golfers like me. And pin positions were pretty much the same both times, more by coincidence than design.
But this round the greens were WAY faster and impossible to gauge. Combined with pin placements (on a Sunday no less!) on steep slopes or often just a couple paces from the very back or front of the green, made approach shots and even little chips to the green virtually impossible to control. And putting was a nightmare; impossible to stop a downhill putt or gauge it correctly for speed (except by accident) and uphillers so much different that those were hopeless as well. I gave up on worrying about score and just concentrated on ball striking.
What makes this even more of an issue is that the practice green, while equally fast, is not nearly as sloped as the course's greens, so that was no help at all to get ready for what you had to face on practically every hole.
A little suggestion to the course: If you insist on fast greens, place pins in fair positions and not on steep slopes. We ain't looking to play Augusta National on a casual Sunday.
Underrated
I played here because I drive by it a lot, and like to play a variety. I wouldn’t have played this based on the reviews, but I’d have to say it’s far better than what they say. Staff was friendly, and the course is challenging. There were only 2 small issues on the greens, that’s why I rated it 4 stars. If you’ve never played here because of the reviews, give them a chance. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
Worst , Golf experience ever
It is a Rough course the greens are rough. The staff are rude. Just a terrible experience all the way around Worst course ever
Great Experience
Enjoyed my time playing at St. Anne’s. Excellent customer service and the course is beautiful. Brought my son with me for the first time and he had a ball. Everyone treated him well and definitely inspired him to play the sport himself. This will be club I will be returning too more often.
Hidden Gem
Got the rundown on course from guy in Pro Shop. Course recently went under ownership. Fairways and Greens were in fantastic shape. Tee boxes are still a work in progress. You can see the changes/upgrades they are making, they were actually paving the cart path on 17 when I was playing it. Course was not very busy, so pace of play was great the day I played. Overall great day of golf.
St Anne's
The management is steadily making improvements to the course but they have a way to go. They have added a few water stations but need more. The bunkers are not up to par. They are mostly packed sand and dirt, which is too common for courses downstate. The fairway/rough is much improved. It's a challenging course that is enjoyable to play.
