Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

Front nine greens very poor

Cart path only made for an exhausting round due to hilly fairways, no reason given since condition was very dry. This was my second visit since last year which was much more enjoyable. As it is I cannot recommend it.

Jurrasic Golf!

This course is so much fun. it is very difficult, but so beautiful and fun - did not mind the difficulty.

Views are stunning. Fairways and tees were great. The greens were not in top shape - which added to the difficulty, but it was so beautiful - I was there to play golf, not get a PGA score!

“Pro” staff completely uneducated and unfriendly

I had the pleasure of driving 1 hour to attempt to play this course. When I checked in 1 hour before my tee time with my family the golf shop attendant told me they were short 10 carts and would not allow my wife and young daughter to sit in the cart with me even though I’ve done this at every golf course I’ve ever played including pebble beach and spyglass. He said you would need 2 carts and I said that’s fine, I even offered to pay for 2 extra tee times. He comes back and says “I’d like to give my carts to golfers only”. I told him that’s fine I’d like to cancel my tee time and he wouldn’t allow me. On my way out I saw a garage filled with golf carts ready to go, clearly this guy is a liar. The best part is I went over to turtle bay played with my family in the same cart and ran into a local that I shared my story with. He was shocked because he sees three people in the cart all the time on that course and the “lovely” pro shop attendant even takes photos of people. My mistake was walking in with my hat backwards, his mistake was thinking he can judge people and put his nose in the air just because Obama played there. Lesson for him, you never know who anybody is - including me.

A great visual challenge

The condition and standard of the greens was very different to the rest of the course. Due to being recently corded and sanded the first nine were very bumpy and slow but got a lot better in the back nine. Amazing views and hole layouts and your score would benefit from a second round. Would love too come back.

Hawaii Birthday Golf

Loved the course overall. Layout was great. Service was wonderful. My only gripe was charging full price when the course had recently aerated the greens. If I'm going to pay this much for golf, which I am a ok doing, the course needs to be in tip top shape. Other than that, it is a must see course when visiting Hawaii. Aloha!

Golf in Jurassic Park

While some of the conditions I’d say are slightly subpar (much of which I’d probably contribute to maintaining a course in the jungle), the experience and the views are amazing here! Completely makes up for any of that, and you won’t experience another course on Oahu like this.

The corse is tired and requires maintenance. There was no beverage or food service and pro shop closed early in the afternoon. I was disappointed with this golf experience.

Must see views

Amazing course layout. Front nine greens were a little rough but the back nine was much better. Difficult layout but overall it’s a must play course and great value for $90 tee time through golf now. My favorite course layout yet and definitely will be back.

Poorly maintained

The greens and tee boxes are atrocious with big patches of dirt/no grass. The fairways are not maintained and very wet and muddy. Pace of play very slow - waited on every shot. The only reason for giving this course 1 star is the views. Players are better off keeping their money, go to the Nuuani Pali lookout for the views, and playing golf at any of the other great golf courses on Oahu. The lack maintenance and ownership changes over the years has been detrimental to what was at one time a nice course. A waste of time and money to play.

Friendly staff

The course was very wet, no drainage and sub par greens, I’m from Vancouver and play wet tracks often and found this worse. The staff were friendly and the snack shack was very affordable. Would recommend in the dry season. Very cool views from all holes.

The most picturesque course you’ll ever play

Incredible course from the drive in and the drive back out. The course is incredibly challenging and you’ll lose golf balls unless you’re dialed in with every club in the bag. On any other course losing the golf balls would be infuriating but the scenery on every hole makes up for it, which I didn’t think was possible. The conditions of the course really depend on the weather, which could be incredible at times and then could be terrible with pouring rain and 30th winds like we had. It’s the epitome of Hawaii golf and would come back time and time again.

It is Jurassic Park

It is Jurassic Park. So much rain it is difficult to keep the fairways in perfect condition and the greens oddly putt fairly true but super super slow and undulating.

Jurassic Park

The views, foliage and terrain were amazing. Was told it would be like playing in Jurassic Park. True!

Any ball off the fairway is easily lost because of the rough. Even if you do find it, it’s hard to hit out. Fairways and greens were soft due to frequent winter rain. Greens a bit patchy, but cut close and smooth. Rolled slow this day. Fairways in great shape.

Staff super friendly and helpful.

Simple food served at snack bar.

Worth every penny.

Bring plenty of balls.

A real jewel

If you are prepared to lose plenty of balls and to be amazed by the beauty of the scenery, then you will have the time of our golfing life. Oahu’s nature‘s at its best.

Too bad the restaurant and the driving range were closed.

Played it yesterday and playing it again today. That says it..
