Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

Rough Shape

The views were awesome. The course was in rough shape. If you missed the fairway on one of the many blind shots you had almost zero chance of finding your ball. The rough was about 7”-10” deep and a ball would just disappear.

Great Views that’s it

Visually this course was amazing. But it was in very rough shape. The rough was about 8-10” of crab grass that sucked in balls, never to be seen again. The blind shots on most holes made it very difficult. Way too rough for the money we payed.

Challenging Golf

Went out in a fourball. We had a good welcoming and getting carts and clubs went smoothly.

The course off the blue tees was vey challenging on the front nine but easier on the back. We were disappointed with the state of the fairways and the greens had many bare patches although still playing well.

What makes this course worth playing are the fantastic views from almost every hole.

Great scenery, bad greens!

The scenery was breathtaking. Probably the most beautiful course I’ve ever played! The only negative for me was the greens.

If there was a golf course at Jurrasic Park....

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this course. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but wish that I had allowed more time in my trip to go back and play it again. Some of the blind approaches were difficult, but having a drop zone on most holes that needed was nice. I would highly recommend the this course, and will definitely play it on my next trip.

Go for the views not the course!

Course is in an amazing place with mountain views, Jurassic Park like surroundings. That being said…took 30 minutes for them to get us organized with carts. They sent a group of 6 with 3 kids playing in front of us, a twosome! The group in back of us got frustrated and were hitting there balls over our heads, as they were frustrated with pace of play. 5 and 1/2 hours for the shortest course par 72 I have ever played??? And the greens were in aweful condition. Glad I played it but will not be returning or recommending to real golfers!

Every Serious Golfer Should Play Here Once

The scenery alone is worth every dime.

But bring at least one ball for every stroke of your handicap. There are no good shots at Royal Hawaiian -- only great shots and bad ones. If you miss your target by even 6 inches, you will either lose your ball, have an unplayable lie, or end up with an impossible recovery shot.

Pace of play was atrocious. It took me about 6 hours to play. Some of this is due to the ridiculously tall rough that surrounds every fairway. Most groups spend at 5 mins per hole searching for lost balls.

Four or five greens were in bad shape. They had been aerated 2 weeks prior, but no sand hand been applied, so they were super bumpy.

Finally, don't be afraid to move up to a shorter tee box. This course is full of forced carries and doesn't reward long hitters.

I will play it again the next time I'm on Oahu, but I'll bring lots of shag balls....

Not Worth $165

This course is a short course that was not in great condition and was run like a mini course that had seen better days. I played it on a day that the greens were punched and you had difficulty determining where the fairways end and the rough begins. Patches of grass on the fairway made for uneven texture. You don’t need a driver or a wood to play this course. Keep those in your car! The pro shop had very little inventory. In fact, my local mini 9-hole pro shop had more inventory. It’s worth maybe $75 so play it if you’re a local who can get resident rates. Otherwise, don’t pay $165. No wonder there were tons of tee times available. Lesson learned.

Very tough course.

It was a beautiful course and difficult terrain, and even tougher when playing with cart path only. With the way this course layout, cart path only rule make it very hard to play, they need to announce it in advance.

Must play!

Jurassic Park is an apt nickname for this course. Around every corner is a spectacular view. Rough is very thick, then it is jungle. Staff and pro shop are great. Target golf at finest with several tee box choices. Can’t wit to play it again.

Strange Environment, Unique Course

This may have been a great course at one time, but the overall facility is run down and seems to be barely surviving. It is truly playing golf in a jungle on a mountainside. As such it is very unique and probably worth playing once for the novelty. The advice was bring one extra ball for each of your handicap points is about accurate, you are going to lose a lot of balls! It seems to rain everyday there because of its location, expect mud. Fairways in poor condition, greens slow. Bag "drop off" process is bizarre, facilities are run down. We checked the box but will not go back.
