Nestled at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Oahu, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club enjoys a stunning tropical setting framed by ancient jungle trees that climb to more than 100 feet tall. The father-and-son team of Pete and Perry Dye designed the course. There are many telltale signs that this is a Dye course, from the many elevation changes to the varied bunker styles that are utilized throughout. The round begins with stunning views as you plunge downhill into the Maunawili Valley. There are more trees and narrower fairways on the front nine, contrasting nicely with the wide-open back nine. Royal Hawaiian Golf Club's back plays towards the mouth of the valley, offering a view of the mountains and sparkling blue Pacific waters in the distance. It's not an overly punishing golf course but locals and visitors alike have called it the toughest and most scenic course you'll find on Oahu.

The corse is tired and requires maintenance. There was no beverage or food service and pro shop closed early in the afternoon. I was disappointed with this golf experience.

Must see views

Amazing course layout. Front nine greens were a little rough but the back nine was much better. Difficult layout but overall it’s a must play course and great value for $90 tee time through golf now. My favorite course layout yet and definitely will be back.

Poorly maintained

The greens and tee boxes are atrocious with big patches of dirt/no grass. The fairways are not maintained and very wet and muddy. Pace of play very slow - waited on every shot. The only reason for giving this course 1 star is the views. Players are better off keeping their money, go to the Nuuani Pali lookout for the views, and playing golf at any of the other great golf courses on Oahu. The lack maintenance and ownership changes over the years has been detrimental to what was at one time a nice course. A waste of time and money to play.

Nice layout

They need some seed and drainage, staff was friendly and the food was very affordable at the turn and tasty.

Friendly staff

The course was very wet, no drainage and sub par greens, I’m from Vancouver and play wet tracks often and found this worse. The staff were friendly and the snack shack was very affordable. Would recommend in the dry season. Very cool views from all holes.

The most picturesque course you’ll ever play

Incredible course from the drive in and the drive back out. The course is incredibly challenging and you’ll lose golf balls unless you’re dialed in with every club in the bag. On any other course losing the golf balls would be infuriating but the scenery on every hole makes up for it, which I didn’t think was possible. The conditions of the course really depend on the weather, which could be incredible at times and then could be terrible with pouring rain and 30th winds like we had. It’s the epitome of Hawaii golf and would come back time and time again.

It is Jurassic Park

It is Jurassic Park. So much rain it is difficult to keep the fairways in perfect condition and the greens oddly putt fairly true but super super slow and undulating.

Jurassic Park

The views, foliage and terrain were amazing. Was told it would be like playing in Jurassic Park. True!

Any ball off the fairway is easily lost because of the rough. Even if you do find it, it’s hard to hit out. Fairways and greens were soft due to frequent winter rain. Greens a bit patchy, but cut close and smooth. Rolled slow this day. Fairways in great shape.

Staff super friendly and helpful.

Simple food served at snack bar.

Worth every penny.

Bring plenty of balls.

A real jewel

If you are prepared to lose plenty of balls and to be amazed by the beauty of the scenery, then you will have the time of our golfing life. Oahu’s nature‘s at its best.

Too bad the restaurant and the driving range were closed.

Played it yesterday and playing it again today. That says it..

Rough Shape

The views were awesome. The course was in rough shape. If you missed the fairway on one of the many blind shots you had almost zero chance of finding your ball. The rough was about 7”-10” deep and a ball would just disappear.

Great Views that’s it

Visually this course was amazing. But it was in very rough shape. The rough was about 8-10” of crab grass that sucked in balls, never to be seen again. The blind shots on most holes made it very difficult. Way too rough for the money we payed.

Challenging Golf

Went out in a fourball. We had a good welcoming and getting carts and clubs went smoothly.

The course off the blue tees was vey challenging on the front nine but easier on the back. We were disappointed with the state of the fairways and the greens had many bare patches although still playing well.

What makes this course worth playing are the fantastic views from almost every hole.

Great scenery, bad greens!

The scenery was breathtaking. Probably the most beautiful course I’ve ever played! The only negative for me was the greens.

If there was a golf course at Jurrasic Park....

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this course. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but wish that I had allowed more time in my trip to go back and play it again. Some of the blind approaches were difficult, but having a drop zone on most holes that needed was nice. I would highly recommend the this course, and will definitely play it on my next trip.

Go for the views not the course!

Course is in an amazing place with mountain views, Jurassic Park like surroundings. That being said…took 30 minutes for them to get us organized with carts. They sent a group of 6 with 3 kids playing in front of us, a twosome! The group in back of us got frustrated and were hitting there balls over our heads, as they were frustrated with pace of play. 5 and 1/2 hours for the shortest course par 72 I have ever played??? And the greens were in aweful condition. Glad I played it but will not be returning or recommending to real golfers!
