Skungamaug River Golf Club

The weather was perfect but the course was in bad shape, hopefully due to spring conditions. Driving on the fairways was like running an off-road obstacle course. They were full of moguls, lumps, bumps and tree roots. And the dirt/gravel/wood chip cart paths were no better. They were potholed and full of large stones. Our golf cart suspension really got a workout.

As for the course itself, it can be very challenging with quite a few funky holes and others that will test your courage, skills, shot making and club selection.

The staff was very pleasant especially Suzy in the bar who gave me a lesson in beer selection. The pro shop attendant also helped an average golfer play the first hole. A cross fairway stream 200 yards off the white tees is tempting to carry but he advised laying up to 180-190 yards which I did but my partner didn't and ended up wet.

I will be back in a few months to see if they lumps and bumps were just frost heaves and the cart paths were smoothed out.

We had an excellent time. It is so cool that you come back to the clubhouse 4 times....6th/9th/12th/18th.

There is no other course that I know of with that.

I have been playing here for over 20 yrs. The pro is excellent and his staff is welcoming. We ended up playing with a couple from Boston and had a blast with them.

For an early spring day the coarse was in decent condition will definitely play here more

My father, brother and uncle were members here for over 15 years. I just started playing golf and signed up for the all you can play membership and joined the mens club. They advertise buy one get one year of free golf but didnt honor it for me the next year. Super cheap management. I bought drinks and ate food every Saturday and Sunday. I'm young brought them business through my friends and family. Not any more. There are much better courses that would gladly take my money. I suggest who ever reads this think twice about signing up for the "buy one get one" special. Me and my family won't ever play here again. They lost thousands of dollars.

Its is one of the few courses that are open. full length and not bad. only paid 17 so great. the cart are from the 80's , so funny

I played this golf courae a few times in the last couple years. The course conditions were satisfactory and the pace of play was good for a weekend round. The weather was nice and the course was busier than expected. The price per round is great, if you search out a “Hot Deal.” The course layout is somewhat confusing, but playable for all golfers. The fairways were a bit wet, and my golfball plugged on quite a few holes. This is a great course for a practice round or beginner golfer.

Enjoyed a nice chilly day the fairways were clear of leaves the greens were in respectable condition although this golfer wishes ball strikes on greens were repaired by the golfers that did them .

Lots of wet weather made the course heavy in places, some unique holes, greens rolled true, front 9 was slow 2nd 9 no problem.

The course was in very nice condition, the greens were a good pace. Will definitely play here again

Everything about the place is e excellent. From the pro Tick to the waitstaff to the course and everything else.

I have been playing this course for a while. It is always well maintained and staffed with very helpful employees. Rick, the course pro, is very personable and helpful. The course layout is narrow, forcing you to be accurate. The greens roll consistent but with lots of break. The course really rewards well placed shots, if you can hit them. The back nine gets interesting with a few tough holes. Twilight rounds are scenic and relaxing. Love playing the Skunk.

Greens and fairways are in good shape. Not a long course, all holes are challenging. Fun course.

Let's start with the positive. For late morning on a Sunday, $32 is a really good price for 18 and a cart. The greens roll true, the front desk attendant was very nice, and the beer selection on tap at the clubhouse was a nice variety. Pace of play was average at about 4 hrs 15 mins on a busy Sunday morning/afternoon.

As for the negative, the cart was a disaster. No padding in the seat and the handling was awful. Made worse by the cart paths being not just non-sensical, but actually legitimately dangerous. Full of large, jagged rocks. The layout is questionable at best. I hit the ball long, but on #14, hitting driver/7-iron to get on a par five in 2 is a joke. #15 makes no sense at all. Seems like the kind of place that maybe was great in the 60's and 70's.

If you're a good enough player where course condition matters to you, I wouldn't play here. Great place for beginners or people who want a cheap 18.

I gave this place 3 stars because it was a perfect day weather wise and then company I was keeping was great. The front nine is the better nine while the back has a few goofy holes... Very goofy. Also, they stuck a foursome out just as we made the turn and they were so slow, we had to jump over them or I'd still be out there. Poor management to do that. The greens are the best part, but very slow.

I will say this, if you're out for some fresh air and the golf is just part of that, you'll enjoy the course.....

Bizarre course. Had app going and still could not figure where some holes were going. Large trees in the middle of fairways. Fun house greens. Decent tee boxes, soaked fairways during off and on light rain that day.Found myself saying "what a stupid hole" throughout the day and "what a stupid course by the 10th". I would not recommend unless you're getting a hot deal.
