Very enjoyable round
The staff was great for a first timer. The course and challenging and is worth the price.
Sussex surprise
Staff very friendly. Fairways a little high probably from all the rain. A real GEM
Has potential BUT falls way short...
Like many other former private clubs that couldn't make it and had to open to the public to survive there is an attitude of "we want our cake and eat it too!" In other words, give us your money and stay out of our way while we look down our noses at you.
When I arrived 30-45 minutes early I was told that I had to wait until the actual tee time before heading out. Although there was only a handful of folks on the course and no one else in sight, this was fine with me. I figured I would hit the driving range and putting green. I was told that the driving range was closed and so I headed to the putting green to kill the time. The ENTIRE time before teeing off NO ONE showed up!! Some locals then strolled over to use the driving range that was supposedly closed?? I didn't rock the boat and headed up to the club house at my scheduled time only to be paired with two others that had booked online. These two were playing out of one golf bag and I was in for a treat. Evidently, all GOLFNOW tee times are grouped together.
As we hit the course for our 5 hour round the course was extremely saturated with water. There were several homes during one stretch of the front nine that had dogs that would either run up to you. On one occasion a very large dog jumped up on a fence only feet from the cart path with a VERY vicious bark. I thought one of my playing partners was going to have a heart attack! 20 minutes before making the turn one of the guys I was playing with called the restaurant and ordered a club sandwich as we arrived we still waited 10 more minutes for the order to be completed.
The back nine was filled with adventure as we had one homeowner come out as my partners veered off the cart path, which was not marked by the way, to give them a lecture about staying on the path. REALLY!? We didn't make it two more holes before we had the pro coming out on the course to ask us to PLEASE stay on the path and he forgot to tell us. He mentioned that he had received several calls from residents. We finished up and I packed my clubs up and came up with two conclusions:
1. There is NO amount of Money for me to be that pro and work in that environment
2. I WILL NEVER GO BACK AGAIN!!
OVERALL: Although I got a tremendous deal online I would've paid full price to be treated as a respected customer. It is a real shame because the course layout was GREAT. In a few years with this type of service it will only be a memory of the past.
Sussex Pines
Course was in good shape for this early in the season. The last 11 holes was very slow pace, they the foursome in front were not playing ready golf to increase pace. They followed good golf etiquette on each and every shot or putt .
Wet!
Nice tune up course to get the golf season started. Not difficult if you hit the ball reasonably straight and an average distance off the tee. Course was very wet from a lot of rain the days before but still played well. Greens were aerated as were the tees and this wasn't mentioned when making the tee times nor before teeing off. This should be mandatory as it affects play substantially at times.
course in good
Nice course I will play again course was in good shape
Flat, but interesting Layout
Although the course is flat and has only a few water holes, there are several holes that are a good challenge for a hacker such as myself. The tree lined holes are generally wide enough to accommodate unintended draws and fades, but hooks and slices will end up in the trees. The water holes have fairway along their sides, so that straight shots will be rewarded by staying dry.
Today the fairways were good and well watered; however the greens were sandy and appeared to have been recently aerated. The rough was a disappointing mix of regular grass and crabgrass.
One of the interesting holes was a par 5 that had many bunkers and a tree guarding the green. It took me awhile to figure out the best approach to use.
Tough rough
Course is great layout. Rough is mostly crabgrass. Problems on fairways on back 9. Some crabgrass in greens
Very good course & reasonably priced. Would Play Again!
My golf buddy and I really enjoyed playing Sussex Pines. It's a very good course & reasonably priced. We don't like links courses where you can't see the flags and there are many blind shots. Sussex Pines is just the opposite - every hole is right in front of you with moderate dog legs, and not many blind shots at all.
We would Play Sussex Pines many times again and I'll be recommending to friends!
Great value. All the course you need.
This is a challenging course of the old school design. Greens and fairways in good to excellent condition. The rough is rough. It's thick and pretty deep.
It's a little off the beaten track, but well worth the effort to find.
this is a very nice course
we played this course a few times. The only thing bad this time were the greens, they were really short and hard not like before when we played them. Could have been the weather taking it's toll but they need to pay more attention to the greens. The rough was really tough to hit out of. We like the course and will play it again.
Nice lay out and good greens...a little downhill after that.
Great speedy greens and a cordial staff. Fairways were sketchy and bunkers inconsistent (ranging from dry/wet concrete to playable). Fairwyas wer generally in good shape, rough was some form of weed and in some cases if you were just off the fairway by a foot, it felt like you were gouging out of some tropical dense weed. Speed of play was slow becaause of some very slow member play ahead of me, but not terrible.
Avg course but a great deal and fairly quick pace of play
Rough needed cut but was being done as we played. Tough rough so stay in fairways. Greens were slow but decent. For the price and not crowded was good for our group.
Lots of Bunkers, Fun course
The staff was very friendly being it the first time I ever played the course, the guy gave me a little run down on what to expect. The tree line fairways make for an interesting round, bunkers all over the place you have to play smart shots. The greens were in excellent conditions along with a majority of the bunkers. The fairways needed a little bit of trimming, along with the ruff. But overall it was an excellent course, especially for the price I paid for on golfnow
very nice course.
course is in very nice shape staff very friendly enjoyed
Great course to play.
This is a nice course, nice people try it you'll like it.
Length makes this course more difficult
Staff was friendly, course was kept in average condition. Made the mistake of playing white tees (6400+ yds), and could not get near the greens in regulation. Next option was yellow at 5600+. Maybe a better choice for my 180 yd drives?
Course is not as interesting as most of the Ocean City area courses.
Very nice course.... A hidden gem!
A hidden gem! Course was in excellent shape. We played after several days of heavy rain, so there was some standing water in some locations. Tall mature pines line the course that create a bit of a challenge for the scratch golfer, but the scenery is nice, including seeing a wild turkey.
wooded with abundance of water
Fast greens with consistant roll- rough a little long for seniors
Course nice, rough is very rough
We love playing here for the money. The rough needs to be trimmed. When it takes 10 minutes for 4 guys to look for a ball that is 5 feet into the first cut of rough that makes for a long day. The fairways and greens are real nice but don't hit it in the rough or its lost or takes forever to find it buried deep. Will play again.
