Situated just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, White Pines Golf Club has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The club offers two courses, the East and the West. The West Course is longer than the East by 400 yards and considered slightly more challenging. The layout is relatively tight and there is an abundance of trees, which means you'll need to be accurate to do well. The greens are large and challenging with difficult-to-read breaks. There is also minimal, but strategic bunkering along the greensides. The fairways provide plenty of variety with some that are narrow and heavily tree-lined and others that are wide with no trees in sight. The golf course has several challenging holes but it's forgiving enough for beginners to approach with confidence.

Slow Play

Went to my 5:30 tee time and found out that there was a league playing a shotgun format and a HS tourney. If I would have waited on the 1st tee, I would have tee'd off after 6. Golf carts driving everywhere in no order and kids running around all over following parents watching their kid golfing for HS. I tried to get as many holes in as possible because frustration set in. Will not be back.

Greens

I could not believe the quality of the green this late in the season. Like brand new carpet. Highly impressed. Great job by the superintendent and his staff!!!!

Just Okay

East Course is a fun, very challenging course. Accuracy from the tee is important. From a value/cost level I believe there are much better choices.
When you go to their web site and view the scorecard, it shows a detailed accurate yardage map from tee to green. They should provide this info in a laminated printed booklet inside the cart or get a GPS device
(which many courses of this price range have). Fairways need a heavy dosage of weed -n-feed, cart paths are terrible.

White Pines East

This was my first time playing White Pines East. The course was good/okay... many of the tee boxes were placed in very weird positions, such as behind trees on dog-leg fairways or the yardage was 40-50 yards longer than stated on the scorecard. Also, the cartpaths are gravel, not paved... which is always a big pet peeve of mine. The grass was manicured very well and greens had minimal ball-divots, which is very nice. The food was marginal at best, only hot dogs and ham sandwich at halfway house, even though the menu had 10+ items for sale. The credit card machine was broken so that was a negative. And lastly, the range ball machine ate my token and I was never refunded, another negative.

Overall, great course! But you could tell management was trying to save a few bucks by cutting some corners. I would play here again, as long as the range ball machine works.

Very, Very Slow Moving

Overall condition of the course is decent for the price. No frills, but solid. We played on a Saturday (mid-afternoon), and the starter had let five-somes out. They were insanely slow, and there was no ranger on course to speed things up.

Course needs updating

This course features thousands of trees, many of which are diseased from the emerald ash borer and need to be removed. Visually, all the dead trees makes it unpleasant. Course conditions are average at best. Pace of play slow, but not ridiculous for a Sunday afternoon.

I am not a fan of this course. It's not all that difficult but it could use some bailout areas on some holes and really could use some updating.

Staff was friendly and have no complaints in that area.

This course keeps getting better

Played the east course and torrential rains blew us off at 9. Apart from that I enjoy the mature natural setting.
There is a nice mix of longer holes and challenging par 3's.

Great value close to the city!

The good: wide, generous fairways. Good layout. Decent challenge. Good conditions - greens were speedy as they dried out!

The not so good: cart path only can make for a bumpy ride at times. Some ground under repair.

Overall, a really good value ($25 with a cart at 6:50am on a FRIDAY!), and close to the city.

good course to play

Course was very good but the cart path were so rough it could loosen the fillings right out of your mouth. They want you to stay on the paths but it was way to rough to stay on them for very long

EXCELLENT, BUT I COULDN'T GIVE THEM MORE THAN GOOD

The course is really nice, decently challenging, excellent course for the money, staff was super helpful, the facilities were excellent! My only issue was with my fellow golfers and golf etiquette! No one on this course understands to repair ball marks and divots on the greens!!! If you wanted to hit a truly straight putt, and were 10-15 feet from the pin. Allow yourself some time to fix about 3-4 divots per golfer, per hole!!! This course is really nice, I hope management can get our fellow golfers to show some pride and respect for the course!!!

Sloppy day

The course was very wet due to recent rains and not due to poor management. We were sent off the back 9 and followed a large group outing.

Invest in your course

White Pines truly needs to start investing some money into the course. The carts are gas carts from the early 90's with no GPS. But the main problem with this course is the fact that they don't cut their tee boxes and fairways. Time to scratch another course off my list.

White pines

Greens and fairways were rock hard, but otherwise course was kept up and fun to play. Pace was a little slow. $55 is a little pricey for the course, but worth the discounted rate we paid

Arboretum that's also a golf course

White Pines West is a pleasant golf course to play for being public. The layout gives a good mix of dog legs, bunkers, hazards, and forest. Since White Pines is paired with a local arboretum, there is a significant number of trees lining the fairways. The fairways are generous, but accuracy is key. If you often slice your shots, then this may not be the course for you unless its the late fall/early spring when the trees do not have their leaves. There are a couple of double dog leg par 5's that require accurate, long ball strikes.

The quality of the course was fairly high - low number of marks on the greens, interesting putting reads, lush fairways, low amount of divots. I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a slight challenge while not breaking the bank.

Better than average

A basic golf course with a few interesting holes. Played East course but enjoyed the West course more. Sand traps need work but early in the season. Worth playing if you get a discount from full price.

Course is ok

My cart broke down after 8, had to walk the 9th. No big deal. Got a hot dog at the turn, it was the worst I've ever had. I think they picked the bun out of the garbage, it was so stale. Course is fine, the holes aren't all that different from one another, but it's a nice looking course. Not the worst course by far, but nothing to write home about.
