Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Horrible. Would never go back.
On a landfill and smelled awful. Standing sewer water many places on course, and it hadn't rained in over a week. The course was over-ridden by bugs - fruit flies or gnats or something - swarms of them everywhere - could not get away - there would be dozens on every club in your bag every time you stopped, and constantly in your eyes, nose and ears. Course not maintained well at all. Tons of lost balls just off fairway due to horrible conditions. CHEAP round of golf -- yet still wouldn't go back.
Good Bare Bones Golf Experience
Settler's Hill is a no frills golf course. The clubhouse is basic. There is no halfway house. But, it is a good golf value. The course is in good shape with the wet weather we have been experiencing. The fairway run fast and firm ... but unfortunately so do the greens. The drink cart was well stocked and offered hot sandwiches after about 10AM, which was a treat. The problem I had was that the course is not very well marked which lead to penalty strokes on a couple holes after well hit tee shots (#17 in particular).
Challenging but fair layout, beautiful vistas - a hidden gem
Settler's Hill is an interesting course, providing an intriguing combination of Links-style and Woodland holes that will challenge golfers of all skill levels. The course is well-maintained, the greens are fairly fast and consistent, and the overall layout is pleasing to the eye, with several holes with elevated tee boxes or greens that provide beautiful vistas. With exception of the lack of in-cart GPS (which is a sorely needed improvement for casual players, due to the many blind shots required) and a driving range, this course is a real hidden gem.
SLOW
we had a 7:15AM Tee time on a sunday . We teeed off at 7:30 and it took 5 hours to play the course. When teeing off that early it should be under 4 hours.
A good course for the money.
I have been playing this course for some time. I have always enjoyed myself. A good looking course, challenging. I love all the par 5's. Position and club selection is everything. I recommend this course highly.
The course was done nicely
Great use of land and great views. Elevation changes add a lot to the course and views.Shame it doesn't get more play
Great!
Love the course! Pin placement first time we played was ridiculous...on humps, crowns, and the most severe pitch part of the greens. Second time we played pins were reasonable but played from blues which were set way back, literally from the tips. So I wonder if management does this to jack up slope?mnot sure, but a very nice course all the same.
Enough is enough
I've played this course numerous times, but have had my fill. It's nice and well-maintained, but there are NO amenities on the course, the refreshment staff are few and far between, and there are no rangers to be found. Multiple times now, slow or slow and obscenely drunk groups have made the pace of play unbearable. Unfortunately, it will be a long time before I play this course again.
Lost balls...
Haven't played this course in 10 years. Roughs are tough and easy to lose balls. For me, seven to be exact! That is 14 extra strokes. Play time was ok but my son and I played the final nine holes behind a slow foursome who had no one in front of them and they would not let us play through. No ranger to assist. Overall I do like the course, it is just that course doesn't like me!
Big Bang for the Buck
Played on 6/3/13--it was wet on several holes. Other wise condition was excellent, including greens. It is very private and sounded like a bird sanctuary. Gorgeous in the fall. I've played it since it was a 9 hole cow pasture course. It has been developed to be a well above average course. Knowing the course is worth at least 5 strokes e.g. holes 3, 5, 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15. The sloped and undulating greens are subtly difficult. Elevation changes are fantastic. A great value.
Overpriced, slow play, but has a few nice holes
Overpriced and slow play with no rangers. There are a few nice holes, but as it sits on an old dump (and you can tell) I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone. There are plenty of other courses within a half-hour that are a better value and a better golf experience.
S-L-O-W
S-L-O-W and nobody out on the course (Ranger, hello?) to try to move things along
Expect to WAIT
This place's play management is a disgrace.
While course conditions are very good, they absolutely refuse to provide drinking water on the course and there is no place or way to stop at the turn. Also, they NEVER have a ranger.
The starter pushes you to get off on-time and then if there is slow play it log jams.
Today's round SIX-HOURS on a friggin Tuesday. All this thanks to one foursome holding things up. People were hitting up on us and we explained and then showed them. They left, then a course “guy” came around in a cart and when we advised him of the issue he stated, "We know we have spoken to them twice already".
That is just unacceptable. It is highly unacceptable on a weekday especially to spend six-hours and watch as multiple holes are empty! I will NEVER-EVER play this mis-managed course again as this is NOT the first time for this here!
Several very interesting holes, especially if the wind is blowing. Fairways&greens were in good condition.Great value for the Golf Now price.
Elevation changes acoount for several interesting holes. 17 and 18 provide a strong finish, especially if a couple of skins are riding on the outcome.
Highly Recommend this Course
A wide range of challenging holes from very short and simple to extremely challenging. We played in early season but tees and fairways were in very good condition. Greens quite fast but true. We had difficulty adjusting to the greater speed than most of the courses we play. Also most of the greens are highly contoured. If you can putt well here you can probably putt well anywhere. Sand traps generally poor with packed grainy sand. Scenic course of many varied elevations built on a very large restored landfill "mountain". Highly recommend this course.
great course could be a little cheaper
great course could be a little cheaper. different than a lot of other courses in the area. not a bad hole on the course
A Hidden Gem
This course is partially built on an old landfill - but don't let that keep you away. This is one of the only courses in the area with significant elevation changes. Overall, the course is in good condition. The greens are challenging. Par 5 11th is particularly tough. Don't miss this one!!
Lots of FUN!
Elevation changes makes this course very interesting. You will never really notice you are playing on an old dump site. Winds will change as well going in and out of the trees. This is my favorite local course for the $.
Great Value!
Greens were soft and fast. Wind and elevation changes make for a senic challenge. I went on a pretty cold windy day and we were the only ones on the course so I didn't have any problems with the pace of play, which I have heard was very very slow. Overall nice, challenging course for a great price.
sporty course, with challenging and different par 3's.
a fun course, not too long, with a wide variety of different holes and different challenges.
