A day at the Glen
We got a great deal for our golf round. The course was in good shape for early in the year. Because of the wind, it seemed to get colder as the day went on, which made it difficult to find a true golf swing, as each of us were trying to stay warm and not tighten up in between shots. Overall we enjoyed our day, but will wait until things warm up a bit before braving the elements as we did this particular day. Staff was friendly even though they are going through tough times, not knowing what will happen with the course, as the banks are overseeing it's operations. It had been several years since I last played the course, but would recommend playing here, as the prices are good and the course is in nice shape.
Bad bad course conditions
Tee boxes and fairways were brown dead grass, greens were rough and tore up
Disappointment
This course was among the best in the area 10 years ago. The course appeared as if they have given up on it. The greens were the only areas of the course that had been watered. The greens had not been mowed in at least a month. We played on a Sunday and did not see a single person working on the course. So sad. I would not play this course in its current condition again if it was free.
Distressed Golf Course - Stay Away
Ever play an abandoned golf course? Here's your chance. I booked a tee time for my wife and I through one of the online tee time web sites. The fairways were completely burned out. I mean no grass whatsoever. I found out at the turn that the irrigation system had fallen into disrepair prior to the "bank taking over a few months ago" per the the asst pro. The greens are watered, but you have to use your imagination to see what a nice golf course this used to be. All of the bent grass fairways have been reduced to dust. Overall, a very sad experience. We paid $20 each including a cart, which was the only redeeming feature of our trip from Peoria. I hope that a future buyer can be found, but I would wait a couple of years before visiting Piper Glen again. Until then, try some of the other area courses like The Rail.
It's a joke
Poor customer service at the Pro Shop and unfriendly.
I was hoping that the golf course would be at least worth going and playing, because it's my first time, but when I got to the greens the greens was grass clippings from the lawn mower scattered on at least 15 putting greens. The greens feels like brillo pads, but that's OK it's part of the challenge. The only putting greens that's been only well maintained is the 18th hole greens.
I would not recommend this golf course to other golfers, unless it's the only one open in the area and you are a beginner. Avid golfers who played golf on other golf courses would not be happy, and enjoy golfing here.
Piper Glen
fairways and greens in great shape, bunkers horrible from recent heavy rains. If you miss the fairway you will lose some time, and perhaps your ball, searching the thick rough.
GolfNow bargain!
Golf now made this course surprisingly affordable. EXCELLENT VALUE for the money. Challenging!, but not unforgiving. Multiple tee locations for multiple skill levels. Definitely would play again.
Wonderful Experience
Bent grass fairways were a pleasure to play. Water came into play enough to be nice challenge, and the greens were in excellent shape. Cart path only due to rain the day before, but that was no detraction. Yardage book was a plus, and came in handy. Could easily become my "go to course".
great day for golfing
My brother and I chose Piper Glen since was within 2 hours of our home. Second time here first was in drought year 2012. Love the challaging greens. Course layout is very hard for 26 handicapper like me but I still loved it. For a nice club thought they would have restaruant qulity food but was just a snack bar for lunch.
I will proudly play here again.
Review
Well first off I walk into the pro shop and no one is at the counter. The head pro was just walking in and had to mention to one of his employees that someone was at the desk. You would think someone would be there to greet you. Yardage books are free though! Course was in good shape. greens were a little beat up but it is mid summer and we have not had a lot of rain. 3 out of the 4 bunkers I was in were hard as a rock not raked and had no sand in them. That should not happen! Next my golf cart was in bad shape tires, were bald and the roof was ratteling the whole time I drove around, really annoying! So I played the front 9 at the turn I went into the bathroom an employee was at the bar no acknowledgement when I walk in and same when I walked out! Get to the tee and all of a sudden there are 2 groups in front of me out of know where. Now mind you that I am by myself and I just played the front 9 in under 1.5.
I pass 1 group on the 12 and the next group says they won't let me pass because there is nothing they could do. yes there is another group in front of them, but this is just common courtsey on the course! Of course there was no ranger on site! Took me 2.15 hrs to play the back 9, I was not a happy golfer.
So all in all they need to work on some customer service skill and get a ranger on duty and get some sand in the bunkers!!!!
One of th better courses in springfield though!
Great value
The only probably with the course was during our round there where sprinklers going and the yardage marker in number 8 was deceiving. Said 145 from blues, was more like 170
very long course
it was too long of a course and too challenging of a course for me but someone who has played for a few years would love the course. I would definitely say ride, even though I prefer to walk, because it is a very long course.
Doesn't live up to potential
Recently played this course and it really has a lot of potential but does not come close to meeting it. To start the management team of the course is incredibly disrespectful. Repeated scheduling errors and miscommunications and downright harassment by the owner over a miscommunication between customers and employees. The course itself is where the potential lies. The layout is great but the condition leaves a lot to be desired. Crabgrass and dandelions have overtaken the course including fairways and tee boxes. Bunkers have no sand just hard packed dirt and rocks. The greens are the most troubling. Very beat up and many of the pin locations are placed in the middle of the steepest slope on the green. My playing partners and I commented that they needed a clowns face to put through since it took a circus putt to get it in the hole. Overall I would suggest this course if there is a discount but not at the $50 price.
So much potential
This course has so much potential but does not meet it and falls behind other courses in the area. To start the management team at this course is some of the most unfriendly people I have come across. Repeated miscommunications by those scheduling and harassment by the owner. The course has a great lay out that has the makings of a fantastic place to play if it was kept up. Crabgrass and dandelions have overtaken the course including fairways and tee boxes. Bunkers with no sand or just hard packed dirt. The greens are the most troubling though. Many of the greens are not very well kept and at least a quarter of the pin locations were placed on the side of the steepest slope on the green. My playing partners and I felt as if they needed to put a clowns mouth in front of the hole since it took a circus putt to have a prayer at making it. Overall not a great experience would only suggest it at a discount not worth $50. Much better options in the area.
Excellent course
Very nice golf course. It is a highly challenging course so golfers should certainly remember that before teeing off. Conditions and facilities are top notch.
Spring Golf
We drove over a 100 miles south in the spring of the year to play somewhere warm, the course was in good condition for the time of the year and would gladly go back and would really like to play it again in the peak of the season. The only downfall to playing here is that the pace of play was on the slow side there were several Juniors there that were walking.
The course was in good shape. The bunkers need to have sand in them not just a mix of sand and dirt
Overall it was a good experience. The biggest negative was there was no hot food and sandwiches were 5 days old.
Needs work
The course could be very nice. The fairways were in bad shape, especially on the front 9 and the pace of play is pretty slow. Never saw a marshall or drink cart and we played on a weekend. Had a father and 12 yr old in front of us that were waiting for the green to clear from 300 yds out. Greens are very challenging. Very fast and undulating. If they get the course in better shape it would be much better to play.
