Bad service from the pro shop
My buddy and I showed up for our tee time and the course was closed because of the weather. It was between 35-40 degrees out. We had no heads up via email or phone or anything. Pretty frustrating because we drove in from Chicago to play the course for the first time. The most annoying part though was calling the pro shop and being told "well you should have called ahead of time since the weather wasn't great". This is Chicago, I didn't realize 40 degrees was worth closing a course over. I've never heard of a course not giving a heads up that they will be closed because of weather.

Fix the Greens!
It’s shocking that a course that meanders pleasantly through the affluent neighborhoods of Evanston and Wilmette has such substandard maintenance standards. The majority of the greens are cracked and rife with bare dirt-filled spots. During the coming offseason the pgood burghers in charge should commit to reconstructing all 18 greens. It’s still fun to play, but they’d be better off painting white circles on the green and calling all putts within a five foot radius good.

This Gem Needs Polishing
Canal Shores nestles along the wooded banks of a channel through Wilmette and Evanston, Illinois. They bill themselves as a "gem" on Chicago's North Shore. Unfortunately, the course doesn't live up to the billing. The biggest drawback is a lack of maintenance. Many greens resemble the lunar surface. On the other hand, the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. And the location is terrific. Hopefully, they can get things in better shape next year. Because while it's no gem today, it certainly could become one.

Gem in Your Backyard
The only negative was that the tees and greens are showing lots of wear and tear from the summer drought and heavy traffic. Many greens were in rough shape with brown dead patches. Otherwise the course was well conditioned.
I golfed with someone who had not visited the course in a considerable time and he was impressed with the new hazards added to the Gem.

Fun walking course
I give this course 3 stars because you can’t stick a 5 Star course in the middle of an open neighborhood. It’s a great course for walking 18 holes. The course itself can get a little dingy and the ground a little hard when it doesn’t rain for a while, but that doesn’t make me a worse golfer. All par 3’s and 4, narrow at times. Great for a casual round or working on your game. And the $6.99 Hot Deals are awesome.

The Right Direction
This course continues to improve every time I play it. For the first 20 years we lived in Evanston, I might play it once a year, with sadness accumulating over the round due to obvious gap between the lovely setting and potential of the course setting versus the reality of the conditions. With the change in the Board of Directors and management accompanying this most recent re-naming to Canal Shores, this is now a course that I invite my golf buddies, mostly former caddies, to play, and they enjoy it.

Not the Nicest
Everything about the course was in rough shape. Probably better options out there if your looking for same price point and want to walk, especially with how short of a course this is.

My new home away from home
The mission of Canal Shores 80 some acre facility to improve the ecological value of its land especially to assist in spring and fall migrations has won my heart. I'm a casual golfer but wouldn't want a better place to golf. I'm adopting it as my home away from home!

Par 3 Course
12 par 3’s, great for beginners. Would’ve been fine if the conditions were better. The greens were in horrendous conditions. Open course so you’ll see multiple joggers and people walking their dogs.
