Great Course for Price and Location
You cannot beat a round of 18 holes for $35 in this location (or $25 off season and peak hours). It's a public course so there will be some people walking through, but everyone is respectful and friendly to the game. Staff is friendly, and course is really scenic throughout along the north shore channel. Definitely beat up on some fairways, tee boxes, and greens, but great condition elsewhere and always playable and worth it.

Canal Shores - A Walkable 18 Holes
If you are expecting perfectly manicured fairways, greens and tee boxes, Canal Shores is not the course for you. It is a walkable 18 holes that hugs the Canal and requires a bit of accuracy for the small greens.
There are bunkers, but they have not been well maintained. Canal Shores is a great place to work on your iron shots while enjoying the native prairie plants and habitat.

Canal shores
12 par 3 holes, 6 par 4 holes. Interesting layout, tough hazards. In a beautiful location. Good spot, there is currently some work being done on each hole, but still more playable than most places within the city limits (which this is not, but close). IMPORTANT:parking is not included, you must park either on the street or have some sort of permit to park in the golf parking lot (which is ridiculous). Otherwise a great time.

Course looks ignored
I have played this course for a few years, and the course has fallen into dreadful shape. The course looks like it hasn’t been watered in months. The greens are so dry that they have cracked. One tee shot landed on a green and bounced like it had landed on concrete. It is a shame that this great neighborhood course is in such a state of disrepair, especially with all of the improvements to the VFW.

First time at course
This course is a hidden gem. Easy to play. We booked a gas cart which was extremely reasonably priced. Will definitely go again.

In no condition to be played
Irrigation system does not function and greens and fairways are burnt out and not maintained. General maintenance is severely lacking with no defined fairways, majority of tee boxes are not in use due to damage and signage to next holes is weak. They have a few signs on course to indicate intentions to improve course but no evidence of such. At this time this course is not playable and should be advertised as such until improved. Obviously, I feel cheated to have paid and wasted my time ! Should be removed from GOLFNOW

Narrow fairways
Course was dry and extremely narrow. Short 18 holes. Don’t need to use a driver. Good course for beginners.

cheap course
Greens were rock hard and the overall course is in poor shape, but for the price of 11 dollars was about fair

Significantly Improved, Needs Irrigation
My wife and I really enjoyed our round at Canal Shores. The course is significantly improved over it's prior condition. However, with the hot and dry August, the need for irrigation is painfully obvious. Newly expanded greens have deteriorated, getting under a wedge was almost impossible, and teeing the ball was a test of strength. The course was in great condition the last time we played after some significant rains.

Canal Shores Evanston
The condition of Canal Shore was equivalent of golfing on concrete. 16 of the greens were so poor and unsuitable to play. The course was poorly managed, at one point there was a five some holding up pace of play. Another hole there were 5 kids riding their bicycles on the green as we were trying to tee off. On 18th hole , as we were trying to tee off, we encountered a couple walking in the middle of the fairway the entire length. We stood and watch as they had no clue of what they were doing. Throughout the entire course we encountered people walking the course with their dogs like it was a parkway. I would never recommend this course in a million years and it really has no business operating in these conditions.

Good Outing
Canal Shores is a fun course to play. It winds through several north shore neighborhoods and is a great place to work on your game. Having a beer afterword at the American Legion is not a bad thing either.
