You Get What you Pay For
Cheap course that is about what you expect. Greens are postage stamps that run about a 2 on the stimpmeter. Overgrowth of trees is a big issue. It's so bad on the 11th tee a punch shot is the only real option (not ideal for a 180 yard hole). At least it makes for good tailgating before Northwestern football.
Fun experience / interesting layout / but where's the mower ??
Found this course online at a fantastic price. We were looking for a low price and walkable round, so took the bait to try it out, to also enjoy the beautiful Fall weather .
The gentleman at the desk couldn't have been friendlier, even walking us out to show us where the 1st tee was, and explained the unusual layout. Super service !!
The track was easily walkable , but still was a good hike. All holes had unique features, and the greens on the whole were in a whole lot better shape than a much more expensive Muni we played the day before.
The course is also clearly the neighborhood's exercise playground, as we encountered several dog walking couples, only one of which was dumb/inconsiderate enough to walk down the middle of the fairway ( which however did provide and motivate me with a moving target to try and hit, lol ).
At the "clubhouse", there is a local dude selling used balls . My first thought was "why do I need more balls for a 3-par course?" , so declined his offer to browse his selections. After playing 2 holes though, it was clear that he was offering a public service, as the grass on EVERY hole was "2nd cut rough" length - holy cow , either the mower has been broken for the past month, or the guy driving it has gone AWOL. The net effect was you had to keep an eagle eye on every shot you made , especially the ones you striped down the middle, as your chances of finding your ball were equally tough, no matter where you hit it . Very frustrating, and it'll be literally impossible in 2 weeks when all the leaves come down !
On the whole though , an enjoyable day, and we'd suggest you give the Canal a try ( just be sure and shop the ball dude before you start !)
Interesting way of fitting a course into a urban area
Chick Evans was closed due to heavy rain the night before, so in a pinch we decided to try this one out. The conditions were fair that day because of the rain, but definitely manageable. But man, was it HOT AND HUMID that day.
I have to applaud the architect for managing to fit a full 18-hole course into the area, because it was probably not easy at all. The entire course is built along North Shore Channel (Chicago River) with lots of straight forward holes. You take a tee shot over the river twice which is neat. Pretty good beginner course and good for the value.
they keep trying
Peter Jans has been renamed Canal Shores . . .. which is what we have called it for decades , ,, , it's narrow and OB lurks almost everywhere .. . have always had a blast there even though the conditions have been historically rugged . .. yesterday the terrific surprise was that all the greens had been redone and were in excellent / pristine condition . .. soccer playing kids and local deer had not beaten them up again !! I love Canal Shores but wish they still called it Peter Jans
Challenging narrow course
Since Tom Tulley starting working here the course has improved immensely. The greens and fairways are in excellent condition. The course is short, mostly long par 3's, but difficult because it is narrow and the greens are small. It's a great place to bring your young golfer as the course is rarely crowded. Walking the course takes about 3 hours or a little over.
Canal Shores
Located in middle of the city.
The course requires lots of walking and street crossing but that was actually fun.
The staffs were nice and friendly.
The course however is pretty narrow with long grass, making it hard to find your ball even when it's on fairway. If it's in rough, very hard to find even if you saw where it landed.
I would recommend to kids or beginner level who are scared to go out to actual field.
Disappointing round
I was not expecting much of the course since it was early in the season when I played.
The course was in even worse condition than I would have expected. Certain parts of the course had just been mowed, however the clippings/mulch had not been swept up. I lost numerous balls that were right off the fair way due to this issue. The sections of the course that had not been mowed, were some of the tallest rough I've seen on a course. Once again, lost many balls that were not that far off the fairway/green. Hitting out of the long rough was a challenge at best. I don't expect the grass is normally at this height as it a par 3 course.
Certain tee boxes were like playing of the rough/fairway and had not been manicured.
All in all a disappointing round.
Good value!!
This course was surprisingly fun to play and had a few challenging holes for a short 18 hole course. You can get through it pretty quickly and the staff is very friendly. Great value and the course was very well maintained.
Great Fun. Great Setting. Great Staff.
Great course to 'work on' your game.
A couple challenging Holes 'Over-Water".
The Course is looking Great.
Kudos to the Staff.
I liked the New Tee-Boxes, Signage and Hole-Flags.
I took some great pix...Enjoy!

Gotta love this place
Started raining hard. They gave me a raincheck no questions asked. If you like inexpensive, fun, funky old school courses this is a good one. After your round check out the $4 beers in the VFW bar above the pro shop.
I have played there before and the course is challenging. Great place to work on your long irons.
Good starter course
This course is well suited for someone just starting to take up the game. Took my grandson out for his4first round. Course isn't intimidating and wasn't
too crowded so he he didn't feel pushed
Decent course, bit needs a little work
Decent short course (all par 3s & 4s). Need some work on the greens (several with bald spots) and fairways (balls spots, weed grass, etc). Has some interesting holes over the canal, but need to add sand traps around greens. With just a little work this could be a gem of a little course. Nice views of the Bah'ai temple from the course.
The worst course I have ever seen!
They should have paid me to play there. The course was in the worst condition I have ever seen! Everyone was walking and the pace was horrible! Just getting around and finding the next hole was horrible! No signs directing to the next hole. Worst course I have ever seen in my life!!!!! Stay away!! Cheap but not worth 1 dollar!
Fun and Well worth the $$$$
Found a great deal on line for this course. Took my wife (20 hcp) my 10 year old grand daughter and myself. Upgraded to gas carts at the course and had a great day.
The people that run this course are by far the nicest people I have ever encountered at a park district golf course. Everyone was helpful and contributed to a surprisingly enjoyable summer day for us.
Thank you and we will be back.

Sporty Par Three Plus
Fun and tricky 18 hole par three course. Great views. Hole layouts provide good challenge with tight approaches and crossing the canal. Greens need maintenance but otherwise a fun round.
