Stonewolf Golf Club

About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Awesome round
Good outing..course was quite wet n grassy, but it’s a Jack designed course, so it was worth playing!!
Bunkers Are Awful
There is no excuse for bunkers being in this bad of shape. The bunkers are not raked on a regular basis.
The bunker on hole 10 has a sign "ground under repair". Why? Fix that bunker. Bunkers on 15 & 16 had no rakes. The sand was so inconsistent, many muddy areas.
Greens were aerated about a month ago and putt ok. Lot of poa annua grass in the greens.
Pace of play was not very good either. Waited on about every shot.
The course has plenty of dogwoods blooming now, which adds to your view of the course.
Bunkers Not Raked, Strange Warning System
The senior weekend rate of $45 is very competitive with the local market. The greens were aerated the 3rd week of March. They use the smaller aeration plugs and the greens putted fine. Pace of play was excellent also.
However, the bunkers were not in good shape. Not raked, numerous bunkers with no rakes. Instead of sounding a horn that inclement weather is approaching, they send out a text. If you're not looking at your phone, you have no idea the course is closed.
Hard course for first time player
Played this course for the first time. There was no layout of the course or the tablet that shows you wasn’t working. There’s hardly any yardage signs so you guess at the yardage. A few holes you have no idea where the flag is. The bunkers are un-playable. The front nine was fair but the back nine will eat you alive. There’s a lot of different elevations and angulations to this course. Would’ve been more enjoyable if I had yardage and hole layouts
Great course and Value
Great course. Layout is great and the conditions are as expected for this time of the year. Staff was super friendly!
Greens
Best greens on this side of the river so far. Haven’t played some of the other nice courses in IL yet (just getting back into the game) but very nice greens here for STL metro area.
Some Of The Best Greens This Year
Stonewolf has made a turnaround as far as course conditions. They have some of the best greens in the area now. For November golf, the course is worth playing. For miminal rain overnight, the course was extremely wet. The 7th hole is always the hole with the most issues - drainage and green does not get enough air. Place of play was no issue. Never saw the group in front or back of us. The $38 senior weekday rate is exceptional.
With all the rain 20 days ago, a sinkhole developed under the cart path on the par 5, 6th hole. They detour you around the collapsed cart path an dit is not an issue when playing.
This time of year
Cart path only is brutal on this course, all the hills and valleys feels like hiking.Conditions are what’s to be expected for this time of year, the 2 groups ahead were very slow , 25/30 minutes to play a hole, quit after nine
Great course, usually a tad overpriced now
Good spot, well taken care of, prices went up vs last year so don’t get there as much but had a deal this time.
Some Of The Fastest Greens You Will Experience On A Public Golf Course
Stonewolf has made some significant improvements to the course. The number one improvement are the greens. They were in good shape and extremely fast. Numerous three-putts and one four-putt in our group.
The tees are in great shape and they placed sod in the poor drainage areas on hole 1.
The senior weekday rate of $43 is very attractive.
We have not had any significant rain in the area for over a month. Some fairways were extremely dry and others had wet areas where the water drains. Not sure how this can be.
They do have some areas that need improvement...
The 7th green is in rough shape because the green does not get much air flow. The 8th green had a bad section that was nothing but sand. On the 14th hole tee, no water in the cooler and only one rake by the large 14th fairway bunker. The GPS on our cart do not work.
Get out and play Stonewolf, you will love the improvements and the greens.
Great layout!
This course is becoming my favorite in the area. A little pricey for my taste but I caught a decent deal on the GolfNow app.

The course was in good condition and the greens were lightening fast. The only complaint we had was when we made the turn at #10, by #11 we had caught up to a tournament they had booked that day, that no one told us about. The last 8 holes were miserable waiting on every shot. And the cups were set up for the tourney, too challenging to enjoy.
Great Course!
This is a Jack Nicklaus signature designed course, but not overly priced(of course, that’s due to locale). It’s a wonderful Links layout, with many wonderful n exotic holes. I plan to definitely return to play another round!
