Used to be a fine track...unfortunately the new owner sees fit to leave it as a wetlands instead.
Country Golf
The staff is very friendly and we felt welcome. The course layout is a bit strange. We got lost at one point but we had fun. We played on a Hot Deal and it was perfect weather so no complaints.
Needs TLC
I've played this course many times in the past. I was able to walk on easily because there was almost no one there. The conditions may be the reason. Very little definition between the fairways and rough. Majority of the greens in poor shape, with bare spots, mowing lines, and fungus growing. This once GREAT layout is hurt by the redesign on the back 9. It needs some help in getting back to, at the very least, the former great conditions it once had.
Great hidden Gem
The course is beautiful, challenging, and very affordable. Definitely worth the longer drive to get to it from Chicagoland.
Lots of trees
This was my first round at this course in over five years. A lot has changed, especially on the back nine. In general, the course is in great shape, with lots of trees, traps, and some water. It helps to use the course guide which is furnished with each cart, especially for first timers.
Nice Layout, Poor Green Conditions
Overall, this is one of the better layouts you will find in the area. It offers plenty of variety. While not overly challenging, it is a good test with mature trees lining most fairways.
The main issue I had with this course was that the greens, especially on the back nine, were in very poor condition. There appeared to be some kind of fungus growing on multiple greens which was not pleasant visually nor did they offer a consistent putting surface. The other thing was inconsistency of the bunker material. Some holes had crushed gravel, others some sand, and the rest were pretty much clay/dirt.
Overall, this is a good course with a fair amount of character. Just keep your expectations low in terms of the course condition. If they can improve the above mentioned, this would be a fantastic course.
Hidden Gem
It had been 10 years since I played here last ... it is just such a long trip to get there. Utilizing a discount voucher it was a "must play" for the cost.
The course layout is really cool - some of the greens are a bit burned out and far from perfect, but generally good. We all had issues using our Garmins on the back nine re:distances - not sure why that happened but it made it tough to figure out what club to use. The sand bunkers had not been treated anytime recently - we did play the day after rain, but the sand is course and full of pebbles - could really use a refilling. All that said - this is a really good course for the money - enjoyed playing there again.
Good Local Golf
Golf Now's $11 rate for this was to good to pass up even with the threat of thunderstorms looming. The greens were soft and receptive, though some had issues with moss. The way the Kishwaukee river moves through the course is nice. The lay out of the back 9 is fantastic. It's a notch above country golf, but a couple notches below courses like Blackstone which is in the area. There is a lot of potential in this course, but unless you are from the Genoa area, this is not a must play.
It' coming back!
First time I have played Oak Club since ownership change. New owners staff is much much better than previous which will in itself bring people back. Challenging course for average weekend warrior. Course needs some work in traps, a few greens and a few fairways. I ended up playing with a local and he said the course conditions are slowly improving every week. New ownership headed in the right direction.
Great value
An older course that could use some maintenance. A couple of the greens were in poor condition but playable. Value and an almost empty course were well with the drive. We will definitely be back!
what's going on???
The condition of the course made me feel as if they're shutting the doors soon! There's more grass in some of the bunkers than sand...the ones with no grass, just had dirt! The rough looked and felt as though it had been cut with a regular, bag-less mower! This used to be a decent course, but I only paid $15 and still felt cheated!!
Not bad for a local gc
A few greens kinda rough. Looks like a lot of tress destined for removal due to insects I guess. Overall in fairly good condition for an out of the way GC.
Terrible greens
This course looks like it was once top notch. It isn't anymore. The clubhouse is dirty and outdated. The mosquitoes were terrible, in the middle of the day. The greens were the worst of it, though. There is literally patches of dried mud on the greens that are completely devoid of grass. Not to mention you might as well be putting on pavement. It's no wonder the prices are discounted so much.
Father's Day Weekend
I took my two kids 9 & 11 yrs. old and we had a blast. They were very friendly in the clubhouse and very helpful. Very enjoyable give it a try.
The Oak Club Genoa. It's off my list...
I should have seen the fine print. Only 10 holes were open due to flooding. The entire course was wet, and unplayable. If I were a bee, I would have been happy. Lotsa clover and weeds in the turf. A fungus has destroyed the greens, making them impossible to putt. Under the current conditions, is a $10 course to take the kids out to learn how to play. Terrible!!
Not At Its Best
Was disappointed when I showed up to play the course. Flooding had closed part of the course, with only a mixture of 10 holes available. This was not listed when I bought the tee time at GolfNow. Fortunately, they refunded my fee later. I had not played this course in years. There are certainly some good holes here, but a redesign of the back 9 took out three holes and replaced them with 3 mediocre holes. Primarily, my criticism is that the holes don't fit. They look carved up and just not that great. The course conditions were not as good either, although with the bad weather I can forgive some of it. This course need some work to get it back to the conditions that once made it a great test. The person staffing the clubhouse was very helpful, friendly, and apologetic that the course was not in prime condition.
Challenging course
Lots of trees.
Years ago, this course used to be in pristine condition.
This course is still in very good condition, but has some major areas that need attention.
For example, the green on Hole #10 looks atrocious. There are multiple (10-20) large patches with no grass. My buddy pointed out an ant colony on the same green that had built about 20-25 ant hills. I joked with him that the ant hills were actually an improvement to the green's bald spots.
If you get a really good price, no more than $20-25 for 18 holes & cart, I would still recommend this course.
Good Shape
Played here often and always a great layout but shape is inconsistent. However, yesterday I found it to be in very good shape with the exception of 2 greens and some of the traps. Agree with the last review that 15 is a little unfair as you can be in the fairway and have no third shot to the green. I will be back.
Yes, the Kishwaukee River runs through the course and it was flooded when you played. Since the flood, the course is back in decent shape except for the 2 greens I noted in my previous review. I played on July 4 and only 2 greens have some dead spots. Your review is not a fair assessment..
