My new favortie local coarse
Great greens! Very well taken care of coarse nice lay out
Great course but slow
For 39 dollars you can't beat this course. It is extremely challenging and long. I highly recommend coming out and trying big run. Just make sure you have lots of time as they tend to overbook this course.
Know how to adjust your game
After reading many reviews on this course, I wasn't sure what to expect. Knowing how to club up is mandatory on this course in order to adjust for the significant elevation changes. In prior reviews there was negative comments about the sand traps, when I played the grounds crew were in the bunkers. There are some areas of cart path, there were bone jarring, a consequence of mature trees and roots. Although the yardage finder is nice to the flag, A few more yardage markers in the fairways that have trouble would be nice.
OLD AND DECREPIT :(
This course needs to be taken out to the woodshed and put out of its misery Be prepared for a possible SIX HOUR round due to the horrific lack of marshals managing the slow pokes :( Read other reviews, you'll see what I mean. STAY AWAY!!!
Big Run
Fantastic service, fantastic course. Hope they continue to make $23 rates available for high school/college students like myself.
Hidden Gem
Big Run is a hidden gem! Very challenging and it will test your golfing abilities. All this place needs to do is update their clubhouse and utilize their views. This would provide an awesome place to play and dine(after the round).
A couple easy fixes
Two gripes. #1 no yardage markers. They have a laser yard finder attached to the cart but it is a pain to get out every time. Plus, it is attached to a wire which makes it even more inconvenient. How about a blue, white and red wooden post. 200,150 and 100 yards out. Simple and effective. #2 the guy in the club house calls out the next group over a loud speaker. You can hear that throughout the entire course. Put a starter on the payroll guys. Now for the good. It is beautiful. It is in great shape, greens are fast and really challenging. Bring your A game.
Great course; not for beginners; horribly slow round
The course layout is long and challenging. Even the so-called senior tees are 6200 yes. Don't bite off more than you can handle. This course is not for beginners, "party-time" foursomes or those with one too-many beers in them. On this day the beauty, challenge and sportiness of the course was ruined by a 5 1/2 hour round. After two holes it bogged down and never recovered. Brutally slow! Need a ranger or two out there to move things along.
Nice layout
Great shape. Greens a bit slow. Not enough sand in bunkers. Played ok, but will definitely will play here again.
Plays long
Ranger was present on front nine, never seen on
back nine when it took 3 hours to play
Fun Course
- Unique layout
- old school course with tee boxes next to greens
- very good condition
- greens were nice
- good pace of play
- will play again
Slow play, long day
After being sent off early, we waited on every hole. Course was backed up in front and behind our group. Blind tee shot landing areas meant the group behind hit tee shots into us on the fairway a handful of times.
Course layout is challenging with lots of elevation change, and enough mature trees to get you in trouble. Conditions were inconsistent over the course of 18; some bunkers had sand others not so much, greens were extremely slow on the front 9, and a couple on the back seemed to be cut/rolled much tighter and a good bit faster. The course has a lot of potential if conditions were consistent, and pace of play was improved.
Fun but slow
6+ hours. Love the course but waited on every shot. Big run needs to space out tee times in order to speed up pace of play
Great layout that deserves a little TLC
Great layout that now looks rough around the edges. Someone should really put more money into this fantastic old course to upgrade carts, cart paths, repair greens, get a ranger, and beverage cart among other basic improvements. Still love the course though.
Now that's a golf course!
Just a great traditional layout!
Long, steep, not unfair. Just a pleasure !
Don't miss Big Run
I hadn't played Big Run for a few years, but it continues to be a great, fun course, especially at a 18 hole senior rate of less than $40, cart included.
Top 5 Course Ever Played
If I had 4 days left on Earth, Big Run would be one of the courses I'd want to play. Awesome experience! You'll be confronted with shots, lies, and putts that you simply cannot get anyplace else but Augusta. Better bring your "A" game and keep a close watch if you hit it off the fairway. Often challenging to find your ball in the rough because of the usual ricochet off of 100+ year old oak trees.
big run fun
Beautiful course, nicely manicured. Pay attention to tiered greens
Big Run, not a lot of fun
The course has a decent layout but the mature trees can get you into big trouble. I suppose if you played it a couple times you could figure where to lay up and play a little course management for a better score. The greens were SLOW. We had just played Mistwood in the morning prior to playing Big Run in the afternoon. It was a night and day difference with the speed. You couldn't putt the ball hard enough to make it up some of the undulating green contours. It was almost like they had a substance on them to prevent them from rolling. And then there was the pace of play. Our foursome kept up with a twosome the entire round. When the ranger came around on the 5th hole or so and asked how the pace of play was going, we told him slow and that we were keeping up and waiting on the twosome. He said it was the owners son and grandson or something like that and I guess we were supposed to give them a break or it meant there was nothing he could do? Anyhow, the round took over 4.5 hours as we had to wait for these two every hole. We paid $44 for the round and all of us felt we could have played a better course for that price. We golf all over and give each course a chance to win us over but this one will stay in the bottom third of our extensive list of places to play and I probably will never go back. I'm not trying discourage anybody from playing the course but maybe our standards and expectations are a little higher than others, that's all. The course has great potential as it is challenging but concrete bunkers with rocks and greens that played as if they had glue on them did not win our future business.
could be a great course if the ownership really cared...
I don't usually give a course a negative review. And, in the case of Big Run, I wish that I wasn't doing so. However, this course is sitting on a tremendous piece of property and the layout is fantastic. Unfortunately, everthing about the place screams that the owner/ownership is tight with the pocketbook and doesn't invest in the course or the facilities. and that's a shame. (disclosure: I have no idea who the ownership is or what their financial situation is). The clubhouse, restaurant, bar, etc looks like it hasn't been updated since the '60's. The course, itself, does not appear to be maintained very well. fairways are pretty lengthy, slow greens, very very very very poor bunkering, as evidenced by the large stones laying on each green resulting from explosion shots from the greenside bunkers.
lastly, I walked off the course after the 16th hole. reason being - the back 9 was incredibly slow due to one group holding everyone up. Normally not the course's fault however I did not see a ranger anywhere.
Summary: I love the layout of the course and the cost is certainly reasonable and fair. however, i wish that ownership would either take some pride in the facility and give it the attention ($) that the phenomenal property deserves.
