Pace of Play
The pace of Play was terrible. I understand and respect teaching the game. But there are times and places for it. Group two in front of mine was allowed to turn a beautiful day and my first experience at Cog Hill the longest round of my life. Nearly took six hours!!!!!!
Good experience — RIDICULOUS hole placement on 5th Hole
Course was in good condition, scenic, very fun to play and good experience. Four stars. But I have one major gripe. The hole on the 5th green was placed in a spot where the slope was nearly a 45 degree angle. You either made the putt or it rolled back down the hill 25 feet every single time. I was below the hole putting up hill from 25 feet and it rolled all the way up to the hole, came about an inch from going in, and rolled right back. Over and over and over again. It took me 8 tries to finally make it from that distance, and I didn’t even have to move each time because by the ball rolled right back to me. That is not golf. It’s an unfair hole location that PGA pros don’t even have to deal with and it soured the rest of my round. Other than that, great course.
If your course is flooded from rain 5 days ago maybe think about lowering your prices for a day or 2.
We are sorry that your experience on Cog Hill No. 1 did not meet your expectations. We have now moved to Dynamic Pricing which will take in consideration some of the conditions we experienced this spring.
"Dynamic" Price Increase For Dynamic Dandelions
Played #1 a few days ago. We learned it was "cart path only" due to the wet conditions. The marshals were out there in force to remind you. I don't think I have ever seen #1 look so bad. They literally didn't do anything for the weeds in the rough. Thousands and thousands of dandelions...some a few feet from the pin (off the green) on par three's. Cog just raised their prices as well calling it "dynamic pricing". Doubt prices will ever dip below the advertised rate. Bad experience with a guest who has never played there before.
We are sorry your experience on No. 1 did not meet your expectations. The month of May brought over 15 inches of rain to Cog Hill. This total is well above the average of about 9 inches for the month. 21 separate rain events kept conditions soggy on the golf courses as it was a rare instance to have enough time and proper conditions for drying. The icing on the cake came on Memorial Day as we were hit with 80+ mile per hour winds, a 3” rainfall in a matter of 30 minutes, and tennis ball size hail. Not only were the courses flooded, but we lost over 20 significant large trees and the bunkers on all four courses were destroyed. The property was littered end-to-end with debris . We are now caught up and look forward to a sunny and warm summer!
From the check in process, staff friendliness / attentiveness and pace of play it was all just OK. There is no GPS on the cart and the carts are noisy and old. The driving range / practice facility is great and the condition of the course was better than I had expected. Of the 4 courses at Cog Hill, this one is definitely the least interesting but does have some good holes. With the course as short and relatively easy, it should not have been a 4 hr, 40 minute round. I'll skip this one going forward and play on either course 2 or 4 moving forward.
Relatively Easy, Fun Layout, Slightly Over Priced
For the entry level courses at Cog Hill, I prefer #1 over #3. For some reason there seems to be a little more design and need to be a little more thoughtful with your approach. It has a few fairways with varying elevation and one with a blind approach. It also seems to play longer than #1 even though total yards from tips is less. Only three par 5's that aren't very long but more challenge on Par 3 &4's. 235 yard par 3 seems strange for this course and can slow the pace at times. They lost a lot of trees and it would be great to see them replace some of the lost ones.
Course conditions are always above average. Greens are always slow on this course. It is very scenic and always fun to visit and play here.
Nice course with tree lined fairways and plenty of greenside bunkers. Short course (about 6300 from the tips), accuracy is key off the tee, as you can miss on the wrong side of the fairway and have trees blocking your approach. A few blind shots and doglegs. Greens were running a little slow, but had rained the previous day. If they are usually that slow though, you can be really aggressive with chip shots. Nice practice facility, and great old clubhouse. Western Open used to be played on Number 4, but pretty cool to hit balls on the range where I'd watch the pros when I was a kid. Staff was very friendly.
Only negative was the pace of play. The group in front of us on the front 9 was brutally slow, and when they left, we were stuck behind another slow group on the back. It was Sunday twilight, but still.
Pace of play problems
Played today with my dad ans a friend. 4:45 round. Group in front of us was a hole+ behind for most of the day. Several rangers on the course but none of them say or do anything. Most of the time they sit together under a tree and chat about god knows what. Several greens are also in rough shape
