Pedestrian course that has many issues
It had been 6 or 7 years since I played OB. Standing on the 3rd tee my playing partner and I remembered why. A ball whizzed right in between us at head level. No fore or even an attempt at any apology from the the idiot that almost killed one of us. Front nine you might as well wear a hard hat....it's packed in so tight there's no room for error....and has water on almost every hole because you're playing on Salt Creek's flood plain. The course attracts a diverse variety of players but results in extremely slow (and extremely stuck up & entitled) play. 4 some directly in front of us.....each one used a different tee box - blue/white/green/red. During the round one them hit at least 3 balls out on to York Road into traffic. Another guy in the group waited and waited to attempt driving the green on all of the short par 4's. He didn't prox any of them. His playing partner - she had no clue on where to drive or park their golf cart...most times right in front of the green.....and then both dilly dallied clearing the green - she then marked the scorecard before eventually driving off to next tee box.
The course itself is in decent shape - greens are fast but the complexes are very similar - almost turtle back with ridges that if you get on the wrong side of you can't keep the ball close if you're above the hole. Several holes were cut right at the apex of ridges. A number of doglegs on this course in both directions. Variety but a short sameness abounds on this course.
They do have a rather ratty driving range in the flood plain and a nice clubhouse/patio. Post round food was extremely marginal at best - despite a thumbs up recommendation from the bartender the reuben sandwich came out burnt/dry very overcooked plus fries were very crunchy & overdone (you really have to work to make bad french fries...it's not easy to do!!). And now suffering morning after from that "meal."
Won't bother returning back to OB for another 6 or 7 years even though the course is 10 minutes away. There are a lot of fine public tracks in Chicagoland that are more cost effective and have better bones .-. OB is course I don't want (or need) to return anytime soon..
I can’t believe I haven’t played here in 20 years
We had a 7:59 AM tee time on a Monday. The starter let us tee off about 30 minutes early. The pace was great, we played in less than four hours with two of us walking. The greens are very challenging and have good speed. The par 5’s played long. There are a number or short par 4’s but water and sand keep you on your toes. The only complaint is the par threes were all seven iron for me from the white tees. Overall a fine experience and we will definitely be back
Great course!
I’m a woman golfer and I loved this course. Nice people. Great location! I was in town for business from Ohio…very happy I brought my clubs! Good golf range too. Highly recommend.
Slow Course & Horrible Staff
Most of the pro shop staff are cranky and not customer focused. I arrived at 5:20pm and was greeted with a man shaking his head no. I said I’m happy to play as many holes as I can and he responded that he would need to charge me for 9 which was more than fine with me. He asked if I was walking and I said I wanted to ride, He started shaking his head no again. Gave an excuse that made no sense. I said fine, I’ll walk and get exercise.
Once on the course, there were people behind me in carts?! Guess it was fine for them to ride. With slow play and walking, I was able to finish 9 holes before sunset.
Overall the course is in very good shape with challenging greens. I’ve played the course many times. A round typically takes 5+ hours. Rangers are non existent. After today, I’m done playing here.
Not a good experience
We went to the Clubhouse and mentioned the weather condition, and the staff members were not nice and gave us lectures about the weather condition and club rules. We requested a rain check since we had to quit the game because of the weather. Sure enough, within 10 minutes, it was pouring around 6:15 PM. We were glad we stopped the game and left the place to have dinner somewhere else, which we originally planned to have at the Clubhouse. They lost the business because of the episode/drama they created.
Not nice staff members and Course policy. I have played there several times and purchased Shorts, Gold balls, and other stuff. Never going back there!!
Good pace, for a Sunday afternnon.
Great pace for a Sunday afternoon round(sub 4 hours). Pro shop dudes were friendly as were the girls working the bar and the cart.
Yes 5 Stars!
Oak Brook Golf does an excellent job of maintaining the course, carts, paths and amenities. Course layout is blended with water on 1/2 the holes, a good balance of both challenging and easy ones. Golfers of all levels will enjoy this course.
Course in a little rough shape
With higher prices higher expectations. The condition of bunkers was poor, needing maintenance and upkeep beyond what they’ve done. A little bit of pollo crowd crossing into the fairway on 16, concern about their safety.
Not so friendly starter
When I arrived at the first tee the starter seemed confused on my tee time. After a little conversation he told me he was moving back my tee time at least one or two slots. When asked why he said because he could. Didn’t apologize or ask if I’d mind moving back, just said he did it because he could. He was accompanying someone that was late for their tee time and I was basically a odd man out because I was a single. Very unprofessional.
Some stupid golf holes...I left after 9
The greens were very challenging. Many holes were on slopes and that served as the defense of the course. Most notably, there were some terrible golf holes that are just poorly designed. #6 is dumb and requires a 200 yard shot and then just turns dead right. #9 is probably the worst hole I've ever played. It is 415 yards and I hit my drive dead straight about 250ish yards...right into a pond. There is about 30 yards of rough and a pond starting 210-220 yards from the tee. It is such a terrible golf hole that should not penalize the golfer for hitting a great shot. After taking a penalty I hit my 3rd shot on the green and three-putted, which was my third three-putt on the front.
Your review sums up OB absolutely PERFECTLY! I live less than 10 minutes from the place, but avoid it at all costs. It's only good for an early April walk to get back to swinging after 5 months off.
