One of the most unique courses every played
Course was originally designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and intended to be a private golf course for local energy company - unfortunately, they moved their headquarters and the course was sold. Course never got enough play to make it and it closed.
This was in the top 20 to 25 of the most unique courses I have played. You could tell it was intended to be a private course as the maintenance necessary to maintain some of the tee boxes / bunkers would have been exorbitant.
It's come a long way.
I played this course last year and left at the turn. The course had irrigation issues and the greens were completely gone. If I wouldn't have played it on a hot deal, I would've asked for my money back.
The greens now are 100 times better then they were last year. Some still have some browning but a complete turnaround. Tee boxes are high which is expected with the rain recently. They were mowing fairways when I played and leaving streaks of cut grass all over which is kind of expected being how high it was. I got behind one twosome who let me play through. The course layout is great. I really enjoy the challenge of the tight fairways and insane elevation drops on a few par 3s. I believe that if the same effort is put into the course next year as it was this year, the course could be one of the better courses in the area.
I would play here again and I plan to in the future.
Excellent Value on Course that is Coming Back
Played yesterday and had an enjoyable time. Although clearly there is still work to be done, it is also clear that the course is coming back. I look forward to playing again, and encourage others to give it a try.
Greens were in good shape, although a little slow. No matter where you are playing, it is too bad when golfers in front of you are not repairing their ball marks. The greens were very receptive.
The tee boxes could use some attention, they are bare in spots. Also, more golf ball washers at the tees would be appreciated.
The fairways were in quite good shape. The grass was not a typical fairway grass, but it was entirely playable.
Although an hour from our homes, we will find a chance to play here again before long. Oh yeah - the price has got to be about the lowest in the area too.
If you're using GOLFNOW to reserve your tee time, expect them to treat you like garbage. Went there yesterday and the dude working acted mad that I would "dare" use the app to get a better rate. Last time I'll play there.
Nice Layout but lacks drainage.
It was worth the discounted Hot Deal pricing. The course is in a nice layout with LOTS of hills. It could be a nice course but it was early spring and super muddy. Greens were aerated and covered in muddy sand so they were unputtable at that time. Ball plugged every other shot. I understand that they are working on it so will give them another year to improve. If you want to see deer play here.
In need of a makeover
I understand that there has been a lot of rain but when you hit your ball in the fairway and still can't find it something is wrong. The greens were almost all completely burnt. This course has a really good layout and a ton of potential with the right owner. Appearance of greens they will not be able to be in good condition until the earliest next year.
I now live in Lexington, but used to play this golf course 3-4 times a week when I lived here and have always loved the layout. With that said, I cannot really even put into words how bad it has gone down hill. Tee boxes were probably 3" high (understandable because of all the rain), fairways were even longer (again understandable with all the rain), but the greens looked like someone had set fire to them. There was absolutely no grass on 75% of each green and the 1 square foot of green that did have grass on it was covered in crab grass and would probably stimp around 2 feet. It's really sad to see a place just let go like this. I foresee no chance whatsoever for this course to recover. I will never ever go back to this golf course, even if they payed me.
Great layout that is getting better, won't be long
I have played here several times but had not been there this year. The greens are starting to get better and the layout is great. Lots of elevated tees and fairways were relatively good. I personally talked with the owner about the course and I believe if we have a mild winter and good spring this place will again be a good course. Improvements on the driving range and hopefully the practice green will be completed and it will be a full service course again.
The course wasn't even worth $20. There is no fairway, and it's like playing in the rough on the entire course. I've never had putts that were this slow. The greens were in terrible condidtion just like the rest of the course. I'll consider playing this course again when the rates go down to $5....becasuse it's not worth much more than that.
Played early, first out on the course. Fairways are gone but rain has been very limited this year. Greens were basically good. Some work was being done so they are trying to get the course into shape, Very hard to keep a course up in this environment. They were watering the green while we were playing so it was very hard to putt on soaking wet greens. I won't be going back for a while because they need time to get some work done. Course is not easy because of all the hills up and down.
not ready but has potental
Course needs allot of work. Cart path is in bad shape, to much walking up and down to tee box from cart. Greens may be getting better but wasn't that great. Fairways are mainly just regular grass. I reserved through golfnow.com $15 for 18 and cart wouldn't have paid more. On the positive side the country side was beautiful, plenty of deer. The owners are very friendly along with their workers. They recently purchased the course after it was closed so they are trying. Would not recommend seniors to play because of the shape of the cart path and the difficulty getting to most of the tee box's. I only recommend this course to friend if they play cheap, have good balance and strong legs. Plus I hope the owners make it work!
The course is getting better but still has a long way to go, glad someone is taking pride in the course again. Been a long time coming, has the posibility of being a great course.
Very Good Condition
In the past when I played The Oaks I came away disappointed but realized that it had a lot of potential. The condition of the course has improved greatly and today's round was one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf that I have played in a sometime.
A very challenging course.
For this time of the year in Eastern Kentucky, the Oaks Golf Course is in the best condition that I have seen it in years. The new owners have done a lot of work to improve the course.
course in process of repair getting better
its a course that's a ways from being perfect but it has shown signs of improvement. the staff and owners are friendly and seem to care about the course.
Poor Greens and Tee Boxes, Fairway grass like your home lawn
Tee Boxes you could hardly push the tee in the ground. Greens had bumps all over. Fairways had grass that was no better than a normal neighborhood lawn.
The layout is good
I know the course is under new management and will improve over time but the condition of the course was not very good tee boxes where bad, fairway was hard as a rock, and the greens wasn't cut and they where spots that where burned and some deseases I'm pretty sure their called Dollar spots it definintly needs some attention required but for $11 you can't beat that price.
In a couple years this place may be ready, but right now it's still rough
A buddy and I went to play because of an upcoming scramble here, and this place will ruin your day.... It is TIGHT, bring plenty of old balls to hit off the tees.. I play here every year, about 8 years ago it started to go on the decline pretty hard, which I'm guessing was a funding issue, and recently they were bought out and are under new management. They have done a really good job with it, it is going to be in better shape in no time, the biggest issue now are just the greens and the trees, the greens are bumpy, and burnt up, need redone completely in my opinion, and the trees are over hanging in the fairways now.. Shot 75 and played pretty well, 3 doubles killed my card, but it's going to happen on this course
