Par 3 17th Photo submitted by Golfermom94 on 10/28/2013
A walk well deserved
This golf course is a beautiful course to walk. It is a great course to walk. The fairways are tight, so be prepared.
Good Greens Brown Fairways
Course is short but challenging. Greens were in excellent (and slow) shape, but many fairways had browned-out spots. Took 5 hours to finish on a Saturday. If you are not a Columbia resident, wait for GolfNow deal.
I hate to say this, but...
I've played Fairway Hills countless times and used to work in Columbia, where I'd hit balls at the range about three times a week. I've never really had a bad experience there, but my last two vists have proved me wrong.
Let's see...
- They double charged us (my playing partner and myself) for fees.
- They teamed us with a single, when they told us we could go as a twosome.
- The foursome in front of us drove their carts on the green (yes, on the GREEN) and were only given a warning. Their pace of play was also incredibly slow.
- Greens were amazingly slow, looks like they hadn't been mowed in a week.
- Fairways were burnt out and not looking their best.
Add it all up and I'm not sure if I'll go back this year. What's sad is that this can be an amazing course, but what's the sense in having a Marshall if he does nothing to people who disrespect the course? There are plenty of other options out there, but I feel recommending Fairway Hills after the round I played yesterday wouldn't really be right.
I would give it another shot
The course layout was interesting and had personality. The greens and tee boxes were in ok shape considering. The fairways were brown and not in the best shape. This is not a long course playing from the white tee's, but the personality of the course kept me interested. I would not play this course without a golfnow discount. I would have been very disappointed playing at the regular non-columbia resident rate.
First time @ Fairway Hills
It was a nice experience for my fist time at this course.
It was particularly crowded at this time (4:10 PM Tee time) and had to wait to tee for at least the first 9 holes. It was woirthy the wait though, I am definetively coming back to this course.
you get what you pay for
Course was not ready for season yet. Grass on fairways was dead and with no sign of green anywhere, but for $27 with cart can't expect much.
Good irons track
Great fora tune up of your irons. tee shots are supertight. not much from for shot shaping. guess thats why its caled fairway hills.
Nice Track
1st time on this course, couldn't beat the deal $29.00. The fairways are still dormant and the greens aerated & slow so it took some time to get use to them. Played from the tips and found the course a bit challenging especially when your playing partners were new to the course as well. Staff were very friendly and the practice areas were decent (small) but usable. I hope to see more deals when the course is in better shape, not sure if it would be worth the asking price much better courses out there for the same price but time will tell. Highly recommend if your looking for a nice track with some difficulty, you have to be on your game for this par 70. Most important, I had a great time playing there!
Staff Friendliness
Staff: GOOD!! (Newer face)
Green: Bad!!(Too Slow)
Fairway: Good!! (Well cared)
Tee Box: Average!!(...)
Good
Staff was exceptional and very welcoming. A bit expensive for a municipal course but it was in good shape
Like hitting off a mat in the fairways!
Having played at some courses with bare spots in the fairways, or very inconsistent maintenance, this course was well maintained! The fairways were beautiful....not grass-like, almost turf-ish (easy to hit a fairway wood off of....and I am not a good golfer.)
The greens were also good (except the unfixed ball marks). A little challenging (almost no straight forward putts), but good.
The starter called it a target golf course, but not being a great golfer, I still found it OK -- not horribly hard! =) But maybe I was having a good day.
Fun but quirky layout
Fairway Hills has a mixture of challenging and less difficult holes. Familiarity is a benefit since there are some blind shots, and even finding the first tee is not self-evident (hint, it's through a tunnel, across the road). Hazards cross some fairways, so an otherwise straight shot might end up unplayable. Slow play may be a problem on some days. Some tee shots require a considerable bend, or less than a driver. The layout is fun, but quirky.
Course in good shape
Staff was exceptional and very welcoming. A bit expensive for a municipal course but it was in good shape
Great layout with challenging holes
I found the conditions to be good although the rough around the greens were clumpy due to plugs from recent aeration.Overall I enjoy the layout and the changes in elevation on numerous holes. I ill play this course again.
Great Value
We played this course on a Friday afternoon and the course was in great condition. This course is a little short but still challenging. This is a hidden gem in Howard County along with Hobbit's Glen. Fun layout and the last 3 holes will make or break your round.
fun course to play; nice mix/variety of holes
the course is in good shape. aeration three weeks earlier meant the greens were a little slow and some were slightly beat up, but overall putting was fine.
the variety of holes -- some challenging, some easy -- is good, as is the mix of par 4s, 5s, and 3s. pace of play was excellent: i was a single and larger groups readily let me play through. finished in just two and a half hours, even after joining up with a twosome on the back nine.
not for walkers, as there are very long distances between green and tee on several holes. a shame, as i prefer to walk.
no hitting of woods at the practice facility -- a minor minus.
i'll definitely play it again at the great price i had this time.
Decent Course for Good Price
Relatively shorter course but some challenging holes. Nice staff.
On a scale of 1-10, 10 being awesome:
Tee Box: 7-8
Fairways: 8
Roughs: 7-8
Greens: 7-8
Overall - good course and good conditions.
Fun course. Tight. Interesting layout.
Very interesting layout here. Lots of forced carries and tight driving holes. Course is short but makes up in difficulty by requiring well placed shots. Played here on a hot deal, would not pay more than $35 to play here really. Staff here was great, driving range w mats but extremely downhill so hard to determine distances. Carts were newer and very nice, no GPS though.
This is a shotmaking course!
This is my home course, I play here at least once a week. I always enjoy my rounds. Each hole offers you an adequate challenge and overall the course requires you to make shots. You will use/ need every club in the bag at this course. I recommend to all my friends to come play there with me! Staff are great always offering helpful advice as to playing the course. Pace of play is usually pretty good. I really enjoy playing this course!
Great find for the weekend warrior..... a real find.
