Great staff!!
Great course and even better staff that really take seriously the charge to provide a great experience to those that choose to play here. I highly recommend checking this course out.
A Couple of Surprises...
First trip to Clustered Spires this year, although I generally make the hour drive several times a year. I was aware it was two carts per foursome--you could have a cart with a plastic divider or not (your choice); however, I was with family, so not a big deal for me. What did surprise me was that the clubhouse is completely closed...the Pro Shop and Snack Bar had window openings to the outside, and no access to clubhouse restrooms. They had porta potties set up with hand washing stations. The porta potties were clean, which was a good thing; but all the restrooms on the course were taped off...I guess they don't want to clean them. You do have to sign a waiver absolving the course of any liability. Good luck with that one in court...you can't sign away your health obligations. In any event, the course was in good shape...there was some thinning in some of the fairways, and the tee boxes were long. The greens were in excellent condition and a little on the fast side, but a nice change from playing on aerated greens. The rough was long, thick, and brutal, so stay in the fairways. It was cart path only when we started, but on the turn we were able to drive 90 degrees. Pace of play was not bad, although lots of errant shots which came across buffer zones (like #11 onto #10). There was a huge backup on the last par 3, with four groups! Don't know what happened there. Nice course layout, good conditions, but it's bare bones service levels right now.
Nice course
Great Day with a childhood friend. Great staff, friendly golfers and a beautiful day.
Holes were blocked
I don't like putting to a styrofoam plug. Try using a small plug but let the ball fall in the hole
cups were blocked
Most courses under the virus restrictions still allow the ball to fall in the cup, although only partly. The full "plastic plug" at Clustered Spires alters your putting stroke almost forcing you to hit the ball more firmly to hold the line if you want to hit the plug, but not really knowing if the ball would go in the hole or spin out. Thats not golf..
Enjoyable Course
Visited this course for the first time and enjoyed it. Its an open course and very well kept.
Interaction with Course Starter
Once my playing partner and I got to the starter in separate carts, the starter told us that in order for us to play, we must share a cart. This happened to be the first time I had ever met my playing partner. Upon hearing this, my partner and I shared concerns about the policy due to COVID-19 , at a time when the course was not busy. Before I knew it, the starter became outraged, and said that he had heard enough, that we should follow him to the clubhouse for a refund, because we would not be playing today. As I’m thinking about it, I don’t understand from a business prospective why it is acceptable for employees to threaten customers After I had driven 50 miles for the round. . In addition, he told us that if we played, we needed to sign a release absolving the club of blame in case we got sick. There is a lot going on at Clustered Spires, probably too much for me to go back any time soon.
It was the most disappointing exchange with golf course staff I’ve had in 40 years of playing golf. For me, it was not about the policy as much as the negative tone of the starter. He did appear to be extremely comfortable in his position and explanation. I love the course and frequently travel to play it. It will be helpful in the future to know at booking which clubs allow individual carts. For that matter, GolfNow should start posting course phone numbers on the site to provide easy access to get the information.
Course in decent shape; amenities a little rough
Greens and fairways were really pretty good. Rough is weedy and thick. The foam blocking off the ENTIRE cup was a bit much. No other course around here does that - they all leave an inch or two of cup so you can tell if the ball would actually have goMe in the hole. As usual, the food service here was poor. Staff was friendly, though.
Diamond in the Rough for the Frederick Area
If you are in the Frederick area you have your choice of a lot of courses (Whiskey Creek, PB Dye, Worthington Manor, Maryland National, Musket Ridge, Richland) but don't forget about Clustered Spires. It's in great shape, two cuts of fringe around the greens. Wish Leesburg, VA would take a page out of Frederick's book and do the same with Westpark - fat chance of that happening due to the town council's tunnel vision. My only drawback was the marshal. We finished in 3hr 50 min as a 4some and he kept pestering us to keep pace with a 3some in front of us. Group behind us never had to wait.
