Black Rock Golf Course
About
Black Rock Golf Course may be one of western Maryland's newest courses but it's located near some of the country's most historic sites. Antietam Battlefield and Harper's Ferry are just a few minutes away from this scenic course. The opening holes of the layout are tucked into the Shenandoah Valley while the back nine climbs uphill, offering views that stretch across the Appalachian Mountains. The golf course has plenty of holes that will please long hitters, but mature trees and thick rough frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy. Traps protect the front of most of the greens and you'll come across dramatic undulations on some. The par-4 13th is arguably Black Rock's toughest hole. This sharp dogleg right has a massive tree to the right as well as a pond right in front of the green.

very good onditioned golf course
Have not played this course for 8 or 9 years and found it to be as enjoyable as on previous trips
A decent public course in western MD
We were a twosome, paying online the night before. The course is in good shape, although the course had people in carts (marshalls?) kinda just hanging with us in the background for several holes. Not sure why.
We paired ourselves up with a twosome ahead of us and enjoyed the round. The heat and humidity were very high, not anyone's fault of course.
Overall, a very good experience well worth the online discounted price!
Great Course, Great Value
This was my golf partner and my first time at this course. We have heard of the course before but never thought to play here. It was a great day the pace of play was long because of what seemed as a Sunday morning tournament but aside from time was in great condition and a nice course.
great course
Course played very fair. Plenty of challenging holes. Staff very friendly
B+ course
Pro shop let us t-off half hour earlier than we were scheduled. Course was in great condition though quite a few ball marks on greens were not repaired. At first we were behind a slow moving 4-some but they let us play through on the 5th hole; then the pace of play was great. Greens, in good shape (except for the ball marks), putted true with slightly fast pace, and not difficult to reach in regulation from the white tees. Bunkers could use work; needs more sand. Staff was friendly, helpful. Great scenery. perfect weather.
Standard muni-level track
Put plainly, the course is decent but is definitely what you would expect for a standard muni track. I gave it a shot, driving up from DC. Definitely not worth the drive.
Managed to put together a low score, but was unimpressed. Bunkers were sloppily delineated and the sand was wet and rocky. Lots of waiting too. Slow round.
If you're a local, I would recommend it, but if you need any sort of commute, there are other, better options available.
Staff not terribly friendly either. Seemed like a place that caters service to locals.
A great day with my son
awesome day saw a few deer rate of play was good just over 4 hours
The course is Great!
Great layout well maintained you can't beat the price!!
Fun course. Great value.
This was the 4th time playing this course. Fun lay out , in my opinion. From easy to challenging , to difficult. Good over all golf experience each time that I have been there. Great value for your dollar ,also.
The Rock
Playing Black Rock is fun and exciting, my 3 brothers an I play thier twice a week when possible. We have a yearly tournanment best man get the prize.
Cool course. Greens still aerated.
Great hidden gem in Hagerstown, Md. just a short drive north of Frederick. Lots of fun holes that are very tough if you're not in the fairways. If you manage to find fairways, you can definitely go low here with 3 short par 5's and a few short par 4's. I will be back for sure!!
enjoyable and challenging course
Back nine was very challenging compared to front nine (average).
Muni Course Getting Expensive & W/Less Maint.
This muni course has been rated highly in the past (2009) but local board control has pushed rates to a level where one can play on much better maintained courses for less. If current course quality continues to decline and rates continue to rise, this course will be less and less recommended. There are better choices in the same area.
Black Rock
What a great course, especially for the value which golf now provided
Great course
The course was in great condition even after all the rain we had the past few days
Nice intermediate course
The course has enough difficult holes/shots to challenge any golfer, but isn't too long or hard for beginners.
Great Municipal Course
The course layout is moderate and maintanance is perfect. The green is well maintained and rolled up, but some of the holes are not in good condition. The sand trap is needed to have more sand, technically and well allocated, then this will be the key hasard to hit good score. The front nice is in good shape and easy to warm-up, the back nine is more challenging. I love the cocept of the holes and facility (and reasonable price). For DC residents, this course might be one of the good experience, if you have different golf experience at the hilly circumstances.
Take advantage of the front 9
This is a challenging golf course but you would not know it until you play the back 9. The course is in very good condition and the greens are in excellent shape. The front 9 play short and there is no water so it is easy to get a low score. However, the fun starts in the back 9 with ups and downs and water all over.
Good round of golf.
When I go up and visit a friend in Hagerstown we go to black rock. Been playing there for years. This time, another good round. Walked in, gave name, started pretty quickly. Perfect day, alittle chilly, grounds crew was cutting grass and fertilizing throughout the course. Course looked and played good. Pace of play was good, overall another good day at black rock.
