Wow
Amazing course! Very difficult but fun. Lots of blind shots and green elevation changes. Course was in amazing condition. Lost a ball or two in the rough due to long grass and leaves. My ball must of been right off the fairway but gone forever. Putting was a real challenge but fun. Didn't really care for #5, it was a bit too long for my par 4 tastes. I'll be back to try this one again.
Challenge
The course is always a challenge. Had several slow players in front of us never saw a Marshall but overall wasn't to bad. Course was not in great shape like I'm accustomed to there but always enjoyable
Played 9/2/2014
Course was in IMMACULATE condition and VERY challenging. My only complaint is the gnats. Love the course!
Single
I had a wonderful time with my friends.
My score was 80.
Isn't it wonderful?
These Greens Are Insane
This is a multifaceted review to explain my 2/5 rating, which I normally reserve for courses barely above the dog track level.
For starters, the course is pretty beat up. All the tees are very rough and chewed up. Some of the fairways are patchy, and the fairways are ok for the most part. The rough is super high on some holes, and hardly there on others. So the condition is inconsistent.
Then there are the greens. You cannot fire at the flags here. You must fire to the right slope or level or section of the green. Quite often this does not involve the flag at all. Then putting on them? Let's put it this way, PB Dye has a reputation of being a bit loose, but he had to be on something quite strong to create these greens and thick they are playable. They are really unfair in a lot of places, especially hitting from high rough. Oh, and being a Dye, all the greens are slightly elevated above chipping areas and sand traps with railroad ties. They look pretty, but are a bear to deal with.
Then there is the other big problem of the course... the blind shots. You need a batting helmet to play it when it's busy. Not from stray side to side shots, but as we found out today from ignorant idiots who call themselves "members" that just hit into you. I caught a ball on 1 hop I was lucky enough to see at the last minute on #12, only to have another come right to my feet just after. This led to quite a confrontation and a 25 year old ranger who was clueless what to do about it. Fortunately the idiots disappeared after quite the yelling match between us.
So all in all I'd say give it a whirl once. Don't pay full freight for it, it's no where near worth it. Be prepared for ignorant idiots hitting at you, and accept the fact that 2 putts on all the greens are pretty good.
Great Course when you get Golfnow deal
Second time I have played the course, this was the first time during this season. I thought the course was in good shape with the rain the day before. I do not think I would pay full price but for $55 bucks before 12 on a Sunday it is a great course. And shooting a 76 doesn't hurt either, greens were rolling very true. I Will come back
Great Day on the Course!
Having only played PB Dye once ... several years ago ... I was reminded on this second outing just how terrific a course it is to play. Greens are in fabulous shape ... not a FLAT one in the bunch ... and fast. Lots of Dog Legs to keep you on your toes from Tee to Green ... and speed of play was as good as it gets. Worth driving 30 to 40 minutes for a wonderful golf experience for golfers of all levels!
Good Course
Interesting Course worth playing, if not quite worth a long drive and the price.
ok but won't go out of the way to play frequently
I have found courses that are managed by Billy Casper Golf tend to not have the best upkeep. The fairways and greens were in fine shape as well as most tee boxes. However the surrounding areas could use some work - a lot of scrubby grass and overall aesthetic not worth the greens fee. There are bunkers they have let grow in and look bad - leads me to think they didn't feel like tending to them so just let spotty grass grow in. Food at the clubhouse was good and prices were reasonable. Coming from Baltimore I would bypass this course in the future in favor of others in the area.
Pretty Challenging!
The course was in condition and the greens were fast. The fairways were pretty open but don't let that fool you. It's very challenging. The greens are pretty large and very undulating. If its not missed in the right spot be prepared for a three putt. I will be back again!
Too Many Blind Tee Shots
Good course but you need to play it many times to know where to hit the ball. I don't think you can actually see your landing area off the tee until you get to hole #16. Making a course difficult by not letting you see where to hit the ball is just unfair and a poor design.
The course is in great shape and the staff is great, but for the money I am not sure I would want to invest the rounds or the money necessary to be able to play it well.
Great Course. Great Staff. Great Time
Had some friends drive down for the weekend so we decided to give this course a try. Very glad we did. The reviews ranged from awful to great so i didn't know what to expect. But from the moment we walked in to the moment we left we had a great time. The Pro was super nice, was happy that golf now drove play, and went out of his way to make sure we had a good experience. The course was in great shape - both fun and challenging.
We had a foursome with two couples and the pace of play was good. We finished in 4 and a half hours but never felt rushed or that we were pushing the group ahead of us. The ranger drove around, which was nice, but we never saw the cart girl. That was a let down, so plan accordingly. The better deal you get on greens fees, the better value for sure, but i'm glad we played. Will absolutely go back again.
A very-good, but not great, course...but a good experience
I think that I have to lead off here by looking at the negatives of the course. The difficulty of getting on it as a single, the fact that certain traps were under repair...it's somewhat of a round course, overall, with fairways adjacent to one another, traffic passing by on a few holes...condition-wise it was just in "good" condition, with a few exceptions. The amenities were nice, a nice clubhouse, great view of the course from the clubhouse, and the cart-girls were happily driving round and round. But this is much more of a players' course than a "golf outing". It's legitimately hard, first of all, with several blind tee-shots, some borderline-crazy tee-shots and some tight approach shots, that put this course a bit beyond the amateur-casual golfer. Intermediate-length even from the back tees, it's really a shotmakers course and carries a shotmakers' attitude and you will find a lot of "shotmakers" playing the course. You know, kind of like the Red Bull Golf League. The thing about it is that it's a beautiful course. It reminds me of Olivia Newton John in Grease. It exists as a golf-course, sure, but clearly it's a cut above most courses in both difficulty and in beauty. It truly is a beautiful course and if you're a jaded player you'll enjoy the round for that reason alone. And when you get through admiring the course for its beauty, you can get back to admiring it for the challenging shots that you have to make to play it well, and admire yourself for shooting 100 on it from the back tees the first time that you played it. Or something like that. No bragging intended. I know harder courses in the DC area, I don't know many better-looking courses, and none that I'd say are tough yet fair and simply gorgeous on top of that. In that regard, it stands alone. Undoubtedly the best public course that I've played within an hour's' drive of downtown DC. But still, given the condition of the course at least when I played it, I can only give it a 4 out of 5.
Course in great shape and challenging
Just played 18 on June 26th in the afternoon. Course is in great shape and completed 18 after around 4 hours. That even included a 10 minute delay due to an impromptu rain shower. Will be back again.
Must play course
Great course to play staff is very friendly prompt tee time start
Tough but fair
Beautiful course! First time playing here but certainly not the last. Challenging layout that makes you think about every single shot and use every club/shot type from the tips. Perfect example of course challenges vs. fairness; my friend and scratch golfer shot a 72 yesterday with 6 birdies, 6 pars & 6 bogeys. He easily could have shot a 69 but could have also just as easily shot a 77, 78. See you again soon PB Dye!
PB Dye: Great if <$60
Fairways, tee boxes, rough all in great shape--as good as its ever been. Greens were a bit soft and a bit bumpier than I had expected--folks do a bad job of replacing divots. Bunkers were being repaired and in tough shape, but that will be temporary.
In general, this is one of my favorites in D.C., and a great deal if you can get on for between $40 and $55. Lots of holes require you to make thoughtful choices. Not much water, but good use of waste bunkers on several holes. Greens keep you guessing, and varied pin placements make it a good course to come back to over and over.
poor green conditions
Course has a nice and challenging layout but green conditions were sub par. Slow and grainy with some disease spots on some of them. I expected better conditions for a well respected course. If it weren't for the greens i would give the course a higher overall, but they were so slow it was very difficult to score. Course is already challenging by design, they need to fix these greens.
4 hour round on Sunday afternoon .. Fantastic!
Played in 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon. The conditions were pretty good and the pace of play was fantastic. I know this place has a history of slow play but we got lucky playing in exactly 4 hours on Sunday afternoon.
Terrible
A step regarding course managing pushed up our team, we played at gold tee, but back up team's was white one. We didn't play late, but he chased us to play fast. So we had terrible time to play golf. more over he never give us apologize.
