Great Course, Great Staff, Great Value
We arrived at 7am for our 7:33am tee time and were immediately greeted by members of their friendly staff, went inside to check in and once again was greeted by the almost over the top friendly Pro Shop Employee, I have to say in 25+ years of playing golf around the world this was by far the best clubhouse staff I've encountered, the course was in immaculate condition , greens were slow at first but speed up during the day, if you want to score well then make sure you're in the fairway off the tee! I'll be back!
Nice layout, little rough around the edges!
Love the layout but the condition left a little to be desired! Rough looked like it hadn't been cut in a while and the greens had some bald spots. I would play again but not for $50!
Not a course for the average duffer
I played with a buddy of mine and we went out as a 2 some. On the 3rd tee was a single with a 4-some ahead of him. Instead of playing with my friend and I, this single thought it was a good idea to join the 4-some ahead of him, complaining to them that the 2-some behind him kept hitting up on him. What he should have done was played with my friend and I to make a 3-some.
This slowed the pace of play to a grinding halt. a 3-some behind my friend and I started to hit into us, which accomplished nothing. After informing PB Dye's clubhouse that a marshal was needed, we were told one would come and break up the 5-some in hopes that would speed up play. However, no marshal showed up.....
My friend and I called it a day after 13 holes, that took 4.5 hours to play.....
Will definitely play the course again as it is a challenging track but better management is needed in maintaining a good pace of play.
Nice course
A very challenging course. Alot of blind shots having not played before. Get a course map. Accuracy counts here. Not a flat spot on any green. Tall rough. a long day for slicers. Will definitely play again now that I have a little course knowledge.
Great course, repair the ball marks!
This course is a good track! We were traveling to the DC area and were recommended this course. The conditions of the fairway and rough were great! The rough was a little too thick in fact and ended up losing a couple of balls in the rough. Our main complaint was the regulars that played there obviously had no clue was a divot repair tool was! The greens were in good shape, unfortunately we each would have to repair approx 5-10 ball marks on each green because it seemed no one repaired there ball marks. We enjoyed the day otherwise! The staff was great! Got a great deal for $35 after 4:30. I would not pay the $95 during the middle of the day for this course! Still a good course if you can play for less than $45.
this course has great view
the course is in some what not so good conditions
green are not as fast like the past.
Got to Play Course
It had been years since I played PB Dye last, and now I don't know why I haven't been back.
The view of the course when you arrive is spectacular, yet very deceptive. It gives you the impression of being wide open and very forgiving. This couldn't be further from the truth. Make no mistake, this is a very tough course. Errant shots off the fairway will have most scrambling to make bogey.
The condition on the course was well manicured. Greens were slightly faster than average, and relatively blemish free. There are a lot of elevation changes on these greens. Leaving a shot above the hole on some of these greens almost guarantees you a 3 putt. The rough was fairly deep, not sure if this was by design or because of all the rain we've had. Bunkers were well taken care of as well.
This course is one you'll need to play a few times in order to really figure it out. Blind tee shots and trouble zones abound.
I highly recommend this as a must play course for all.
PB DYE - very nice
this was the second time i have played this course, the first time i did not fair that well. it is a tough course your first go around. the second time i knew what i was in for. a very nice course, on a big property, great views, and a nice layout. water, hills, blind tee shots, make for an exciting round, make sure your tee shots are in play.
the only beef i had with the course was on that particular monday, the weather was perfect for golf, but it was cart path only. when i ask the guy at the pro shop why, he said every monday they treat the fairways. which i suppose is an acceptable answer, but when i carry 3 clubs to my ball, drop 2, hit the ball and then pick up my clubs, they were covered in slippery goup, which i did not like. oh yeah, the waterfall was also turned off, which was a disappointment. other than that, great course, great views, good staff, and a good time.
Good for this time of year
It was 37 degrees when we teed off after receiving an inch of rain the day before (4/14). So with that, I was frankly expecting a mess on the course. Actually wasn't so! Greens were punched about two weeks prior; grounds crew was ahead of us rolling and cleaning. Sand traps were a mess, but I've yet to find a place this year after this brutal winter that have their traps ready so early in the year. Fairways were in good shape and greens, even though sandy, were true. Overall good experience and really enjoyed it. Will be back in the summer.
Great track...
Beautiful course with a challenging layout. Many tiered, undulating greens coupled with all being aerated made first time play difficult on the greens and approach shots. Definitely a course I would look forward to playing again having a better understanding of knowing ball placement. I understand why the course gets such positive reviews with the surrounding views of the Western Maryland hills. The staff were very cordial. Chad in the pro shop sent us out with friendly conversation and Brittany on the snack cart was adorable and always driving away requesting us to "come back and see us again!" I think the starter can tone it down a little delivering his "canned" speech with more emphasis on having an enjoyable round rather than approaching our foursome twice on the tee box regarding rules. A final sendoff of "keep them down the middle" with a smile on his face wouldn't hurt...
Bring the "A" game putter
P.B.Dye is a beautiful and fun course. The greens were extremely fast and with PLENTY of twists and turns. Bring the "A" game on the putter. This course should be on all "must play" lists.
Great Greens, Course knowledge is a plus
The course has several blind tee shots and the greens are tricky. You need to play this course a few times to truly appreciate and play it well.
Great
Course in great shape I highly recommend.due to all the rain back in June didn't damage course like some of the other courses I have played.
Great shotmaking course
Nice course with interesting layout. Definitely emphasizes quality shots into the tiered, undulating greens. Went when the greens were aerated, but I can see why the course gets such positive reviews. Will def go back.
Terrible Conditions, No marshall
It looks like they are letting the course die out a slow death, just like the pace of play with no marshal anywhere to be seen..
Good track
Played this for the second time. Course was in solid shape and I enjoyed the round very much. Only issue is that is was VERY slow. First time I played there were not many people on the course and we flew. This time it took just over 5 hours - which is not fun when you are waiting for the group in front of you on every hole. Clean up the pace of play and this is a go-to type of layout.
Fun - but beat up
Just played PB Dye over the weekend and I can see why people like this course so much. It is definitely fun to play, and the greens are like a Putt Putt course. Unfortunately it is need of serious maintanence. There were weeds on the Tee boxes, weeds around the greens, bare spots, and some fairways look like a war zone. A divots paradise. I think I would play this course in the spring, after she has had a long winters nap!
Great, great course
Outstanding layout - some very challenging holes, and overall a fair test.
Varied greens - some are huge, some have a ton of undulations, and some have both. Although, they were pretty beat up when we played - fix your ball marks golfers!!
Great views - Every other hole or so offers a great view of either the course or the mountainous backdrop.
Great staff - everyone was very cordial and professional (except maybe the girl working the bar/grill - she was rather dour, and quite slow - get her some help).
Playing here with a golfnow deal is about as good as it gets in the DC area. Worth the drive.
Disappointing
Greens in horrible shape. Worst bare spots I have seen in a long time.WAY WAY OVERBOOKED. Four group stacked up. We played only six holes in two hours. The course then sounded the lightning warning and only wanted to give us a 9 hole replay. Finally talked them into an 18. Which I have to use within a few months.
I won't be back there!!! We expected MUCH MUCH more from thePB Dye name.
Gnats + Dead Greens
I have a few issues with this course, which is unfortunate, since it is a really great layout.
The staff was very friendly and the track has a very interesting routing. Great seeing Pete Dye's influence on his son, with railway ties throughout the course.
The greens on this course were in horrible condition. They were far too dry and fast, and some of the greens were nearly half dead (brown and black spots were rampant). Often the ball would not roll true, because it had to roll through a dead patch of grass. Also, the greens were enormous and undulating. Pin placements were made far too difficult as a result. Some greens could stand to be shrunk, even turned into fairway in some spots (especially the 12th hole.. a 4 tier green).
The gnats were also an issue the entire round. It was about 95 degrees when we played, and it didn't help to have bugs flying in your face the entire time. They didn't bite, but they were quite annoying.
Holes 11, 16 and 18 are spectacular. Some maintenance is necessary to turn this course around. The layout is great, but I wouldn't return until they fix some of these issues.
That is Billy Casper Golf Management for you....
