5.5 hour round
Seems like the tee times are too close together for the course difficulty. 3 hours to play the front nine. Waited on every shot. Fairways and greens in great shape. A lot of ballmarks on the greens that were not fixed (not course's fault really). Pretty funny... there was a big focus from staff on ordering your food on the 9th tee so it is ready when you finish the 9th hole. This was where they focused their efforts for a timely round. When we got to the bar to pick up our ham sandwiches, they weren't ready for us and we still waited 5-7 minutes at bar. Some tees were on uneven ground, but that was one of the few reminders we were on a public course. Overall the course was a bargain for $62 on a holiday morning. Staff was cordial. Some holes will discourage beginner golfers due to some forced carries/water. Definitely would play again when there is another GolfNow deal for this course.
Shotmakers Paradise
The day got started a bit rough...The guy working the register for check-in was incredibly slow and a bit grumpy as well. I almost missed my tee time and was there 15 minutes early. The golf course, however, is exceptional. Here are some notes:
Plays a lot longer than the scorecard lists. There is a lot of space of the tees but they are generally blind shots (12 tee shots are blind). The true challenge of this course lies on and around the greens, which are severely slopped. Most greens are multi-tiered and surrounded by trouble, whether it be water (literally right off the green in the case of the 9th hole) or bunkers.
I still found this course very score-able. If you can putt well there are certainly opportunities out there. Some short par 5's and par 4s really balance out a couple of the beastly par 4s.
All in all, this is a must-play golf course and the quality you would expect from pb dye.
The layout of this course is great
First time at this course and won't be my last. The staff was great from the pro shop to the cart girl. Some of the fastest greens that I have played. The course is very fair just make sure you play the right tee boxes.
Bring your "A" game to play P.b. Dye
This course gives new meaning to the saying that golf is a game of recovery. Most of the par 4 and 5 holes start with a blind tee shot. Misplaced drives are a challenge to overcome. Extremely firm greens favor the run-up approach shot. Bring plenty of balls or this will be a truly humbling experience. The staff is great. They understand what you are going through.
Challenging but fair course.
Great course in a beautiful area of western Maryland, just outside of Frederick. Challenging course with many dog legs, rolling fairways and greens, but fair enough due to open fairways, minimal sand and water. I would absolutely recommend the course and look forward to playing again.
Great Course
As always, PB Dye is fun to play and relatively challenging. If your approach shots are on, pars can be had. If they're not, you'll be on the wrong part of the green and it's three-putt-city
Love the quiet
I went from birdie put to triple bogey three times. I can't wait to play it again. Beautiful course. I appreciated the fore caddies.
Blind Shots
Played this tough course for the first time on a windy day. The course was in pretty good shape. The starters were nice and helpful. The only problem with the course is that it seemed like all but 2 or 3 of the holes (besides Par 3s) were blind tee shots. Since no one in our group had played this course before and there was no GPS or real maps of the layout, a lot of times what we thought would be a good tee shot would wind up out of play or lost because you couldn't see the landing area. Also ran into a little issue with a ranger telling us on the 10th that we needed to pick up our pace of play even though we played the front 9 in 2:03 and 18 in about 4:10. Won't be returning because of that issue and the blind layout.
Pleasant surprise!
This course is very close to my home but is very expensive. I play it for the challenge after playing this course I find most courses rather easy. its like training in Colorado and running down near the ocean you know the altitude thing! Its a fun course!
Very challenging greens, nice setting, and some interesting features.
The course is fairly well maintained, the staff was friendly, and the setting is very nice. The greens had been aerated earlier this spring but due to the delayed spring warming, the putting surface was still pretty bumpy. There is lots of undulation and elevation change within each green, so consistent two putting is a challenge for sure.
Great course - greens aerated -slow day
I have played PB Dye many times, and love the layout. The course is always a challenge. It is not overly long from the bue tee's but the slopes on the greens make up for what it does not have in length. The website said that they had aerated the greens in Mid-March ...and we played 4/20...and there were a lot of sand filled aeration holes on all the greens, not allow them to roll smoothly(which was disappointing). the round took over 5 hours. Tee times got pushed back due to some traffic in the area that did not allow players to get to the course for earlier tee times, and rain the night before making it cart path only ...made for a real long day at the course. It appears they are letting some of the fairway bunkers grow in to Grass bunkers, perhaps just to save on maintenance. Will be going back this summer for another couple o f greens and hopefully be the regular fast greens and course maintenance.
Great for the money
Staff were all very friendly, course was in really good condition, a couple more holes could use a bell, I will definitely go again!
Challenging Course at a Great Value
Loved my round at PB Dye yesterday. The course was in very good shape despite recent storms, the greens were quick and the course was a great challenge. Got to play it for $52 on a Sunday through Golfnow which was great, and my buddy and I were impressed by the course design, views and challenging holes. It's definitely one of the "best values" in the DC metro area if you can get on at the discounted rate.
This course has many challenging holes
The course conditions were very good, though the greens would not hold the ball ( lack of rain ), they were fast and challenging. I will definitely play this course again.
