The New England Country Club

I have nothing bad to say about the course. Good 18 hole layout with enough contours and changes to consider club options in every hole. You should use your entire bag and not just bomb it away on every hole. Pace of play was an issue. Foursomes knew it was busy but did not keep the round moving. Did not see anyone monitoring to keep things going. Not a big deal but something that would have cut down on the waiting. That aside, this Hal Irwin design is a solid track for an afternoon round.

Challenging and enjoyable course. Fairways and greens were in very good shape, especially compared to some of the local courses that remain soggy.

A couple of the par threes play a bit short, but otherwise a very nice course with a challenging layout. Half Irwin did himself proud!

Overall layout is a fun, challenging course to play. Not particularly long, even from the tips. But there are a lot of holes where missing the fairway / green by just a couple of yards means you aren’t going to get your ball back - tight layout with many hazards, and rarely a flat lie (lots of slopes). Terrain often feeds into hazards and cart paths can come into play on multiple holes. This is the type of course where a little course knowledge goes a long way, and a small miss can be severely punished. Don’t get me wrong - it is fair - but if you aren’t having a good day off the tee, it can get ugly; knowing where to miss is huge. This does contribute to some slow play on some holes due to people looking for golf balls. Also important on select holes with blind shots to drive up to make sure you don’t hit up on the group ahead.

As far as course conditions, the golf course has grown in nicely over the last month with all the rain we have had. Fairways and tees are in great shape and lush. Rough coming in thick and starting to seed. Greens were air rated about one month ago and are definitely looking better. However, they are running a little slow, and putts are not consistently rolling “true” inside of 10 feet (still a bit bumpy). Greens would be awesome if they just cut them lower / rolled them. Usually this course is known for quick, true putting surfaces, especially for a public layout. Hopefully they speed them up a little over the coming weeks. One thing to note - the 11th green is running VERY firm and fast versus the other holes - it was not punched like the rest of the greens were a month ago because they did it late last season - be aware of this when you putt or you will knock it right off the green! Yes, really. Would be nice if all the greens putted consistently like #11, but that might be too fast for some people’s tastes.

Service at NECC is always exceptional. The staff goes out of their way to call you by name and is always courteous and friendly. Food in the pub is consistently good. The chefs offer nice specials weekly. The beverage cart service on the course is also friendly and come around often.

I would strongly recommend a round here.

After booking a tee time thru Golfnow, and arriving a DAY early, ( a story in and of itself lol) in the middle of an alumni tournament no less, Joe and Jim in the pro shop still managed to get me a tee time about an hour and 45 min after what I had scheduled. After a leisurely time at the range and practice green, I (playing as a single), was matched up with a former member and his young friend. A good thing as this was my 1st time here. The Hale Irwin design features some challenging greens, with a tough but fair course layout even for a high handicapper such as myself. The course was in great shape after a very wet spring, and I am looking forward to playing multiple times here this season.

Course is very wet and in repair...back nine was disappointing.

It is a rite of passage that we start the golf season here. We were so happy to hear that nothing had changed as there was talk of houses being built in place of the driving range but we got through another year. The course is a great layout by Hale Irwin, with elevation changes, forced carries and several blind shots, this is a true test of golf. I would recommend this course to anyone playing in the area. The most fun thing about the course is the par 3's, from boulders hiding the pin to double greens to forced carries, every tee shot is an adventure.

Fantastic Staff from cart guy to pro shop to starter very nice and accommodating. Course is in great shape considering we are still in March. Layout is fun and 17/18 are too of the best finishing holes I have played...If ypu haven’t played you will nit be dissapointed.

This is one of the top golf courses in massachusetts and it is well cared for and greens are in great shape. Great layout and a lot of chalenging holes.

Never played before and I can tell you, you need to know the course! This is not a bad thing, sharp doglegs and up and down fairways to greens require it. Yes, the greens are fast, but put true. They were in good shape. To other players not the course "Fix your ball marks you dummies"! Play was slow some times, but wasn't the end of the world. There were wet areas on the fairway, that's why the good not excellent rating. Nothing you can do about Mother Nature. The layout was alot of fun, you can't just "Grip it & Rip it". Shot placement is premium here. Ate at Egans' Pub and the food was very good. Best of all everyone at New England Country Club, were very friendly and helpful! will definitley play this course again.

So, I hadn’t played this course since 2007. A lot of courses that used to impress me back in the day no longer do now that I’ve played a lot of golf in numerous places. New England country club definitely did today. They make the best possible use out of the existing landscape. The holes are challenging but fair. The greens are amazingly fast even at the end of the season after heavy amounts of rain. I was Thorley impressed today and definitely plan on making this a monthly stop during golf season. Two thumbs up and five stars.

Challenging but forgiving. Very good condition and friendly staff. Played with 3 members and they made it very enjoyable and memorable.

Very pretty course. Up and down fairways , requires shot making. Greens were firm and fast. A good course.
