Trying to get back to the glory days.
I first want to state that I and my group of golf buddies were one of the first to play this course when it opened. No massive clubhouse, just a double wide trailer on a stone parking lot. Cost: $38 with a cart. The course was pristine and the greens were already fast and true. From that opening in 1996 to about six years ago the course stayed that way. For whatever reason things started going south quickly. You can read all the other comments on how bad it got. I just played this weekend and the course is far from pristine, but is on the road to recovery. Progress is being made but is taking time as new management has to deal with the O’Brien family. Greens are slower than normal but run true. I hope the mission statement from the new management stating they will bring it back to its glory days is true. Only time will tell.
Pace was very slow. 5.5 hours
Greens very slow.
Great layout.
Woodlands Course
This course has definitely gone downhill the last few years! I hadnt played the course in about 6 years, and back then it was in fantastic shape to go with the fantastic scenery.
The staff was still very friendly, the clubhouse and golf shop were very nice, and everything went very smooth. Unfortunately the tee boxes look like they havent been seeded in a couple years, the fairways were missing large patches of grass, and the greens were incredibly long and slow. Im glad I did not pay full price, as $80 seems pretty steep for tue course conditions.
not what it could be
This tough layout has always been a challenge, and the ever-present woods ate a half dozen (or so) of my golfballs, but that's to be expected. However, the tee boxes are in very poor condition and the cart paths are falling apart. Taking down some trees might help provide some sun to the tee boxes.
Tough course
The course is coming back. Conditions were much better than last year.
Beautiful course but poor conditions
Let me say this course has soooo much potential. The clubhouse is really cool, putting green was good, I didn’t hit the range but my buddy said it was good, and the greens on the course were true but a little slow. However the tee boxes and fairways… they need some real work. The tee boxes on maybe half the holes were super dead and had some weeds, others were ok. Some of the par 3 boxes were very divot filled. The fairways weren’t super divot filled, but they were dead or had weeds in a lot of areas which I was really disappointed with. If I wouldn’t have used a hot deal I would have been quite upset with paying the full $95 weekend fee. The course has such a cool layout, it was really challenging, and the views were awesome. Very unique course. Just poorly maintained in my opinion. I might come back if I get another hot deal but I’m not going for the full fee.
Returning to Glory
A lot of bad reviews due to recent course conditions in the past years, but the course is getting back to its great conditions.
One of the toughest layouts around and abdundant wildlife. Great staff. Nice to see the course becoming what it’s meant to be.
Hopefully ownership pours more resources into it, could be one of the best in the area.
Prices a little steep depending on the day. Only negative is the green speed, which is getting better now that the grass is back to being pristine.
Very enjoyable.
Staff excellent. Grreter/cart guy. Very nice and helpful.
Everyone in shop, maintenece folks that stopped when
We were ready to hit
Bar restaurant not open was only down point. Going back tomorrow. Thanks again
Great Course
The front side may be one of the toughest around, bring plenty of “water balls”.
Strike from the list
I have avoided playing this course for two year, but made the mistake of playing it this past weekend. In that time between rounds, the course maintenance has gone to pot. A large number of sand traps are filled with tall weeds, the tee boxes, fairways and greens are eaten alive. Greens roll like shag carpeting and are riddled with dead areas with no grass and the ball hops and bounces and every putt. I highly recommend that you not spend the fortune they're asking for greens fees and find another course in the area. I have taken this place permanently off the ;list, and I hope after reading my review that you will do the same. Ownership needs to bring this course back to what it used to be. My score for this course in its present condition is F.
Bad shape- needs a lot of work.
The course was in horrible shape overall. Tee boxes super thick and clumpy. Even the couple boxes they had mowed were still in bad shape. Worst I have seen at this course. Fairways were thick and clumpy and even the ones that were mowed had dried grass clippings and the fairway had grass clumps randomly. Only a few fairways were even in what I would call decent shape.
The rough was spotty and non existent in a few spots as it was dirt in a few spots. The greens were the only thing that wasn’t bad, but they still needed to be cut and playing super slow. They also were not in the shape they have been in the past. Even if they cut those greens I don’t think they will be considered “good shape”.
There was dandelions everywhere in the rough and light rough that had been killed but still were dead and everywhere. Not enough good grass to grow up and choose them out. Really looked bad and I get it this was early April but by mid May there shouldn’t be this many issues with the a course.
Overall this is a great layout and could be a fun course like it always has been but it really needs a LOT of work. I would not pay full price to play it. Currently it is playing like any other $35-40 municipal course you can find all over NW Indiana. Those are in much better shape and cost half that money to play. Sad as it is a great track but really gone downhill.
Whittacre Review
Whittacre used to be a very nice well appointed course. Challenging such that all dog-leg lefts. Although the course charges a stiff price still, the conditions have steadily deteriorated each year. Granted, this was first week opened and some extreme weather conditions occurred recently. Got a fair price on golfnow and was happy to be out playing but the carts were programmed to not let you off cart-paths and on some holes the GPS did not work and we could not move until calling staff to cut the GPS. We obeyed and did not stray from path but the glitch was frustrating.
Thank you are your comment.
GPS malfunction has been fixed with your help! The goal for this season is to bring the course condition back!
We look forward to you playing here again
Whittaker
Course was in pretty good shape for mid November. Leaves were not too bad. Great layout. Looking forward to playing again in the future.
Run down!
Still struck with the disease greens, fairways tee boxes, better than earlier this summer but not good. Make matters worse the aerated the greens the day before. Would have been nice to know that. Sand traps in rough shape due to neglect and for some reason most filled up with the cores from the greens, would have been nice to know. I have played this course over 100 times in the 3 decades, never been in this condition. Love the layout!
Great Layout
This course has an awesome layout that challenges all levels. It was generally in good shape but a few rough spots throughout. The staff was great to work with. I do recommend playing here!
Thank you for your comments
We have been working hard on bringing the course back from the conditions last year. We are currently working on bunkers, greens and tees. We will posting current pictures on social media of the course
