Bruce Hills Golf Club
About
Bruce Hills Golf Course is located in the north metro Detroit area near Romeo. Mature trees are scattered throughout the course, providing shade and a peacefully secluded feel. The par-70 layout is relatively short at only 5,630 yards form the back tees, making it an ideal round for beginners but it still provides good practice and a quick round for more advanced players. The golf course sprawls across a diverse terrain that allows for downhill and uphill approaches to the small, round greens, which are often sloped from back to front. Keeping the ball below the hole is the key to scoring well on this golf course. Bruce Hills' player-friendly layout only has four bunkers but water comes into play on 12 holes, providing the bulk of the course's challenges.

Nice course, good value
Nice course. Good value. Interesting layout.
Course design has water or bunkers that require you to underclub to stay out of trouble. Not an issue. Adds to the challenge. Fairways and tee boxes in good shape. Greens were consistent in speed.
I’ll go back.
Good value
Other reviews of this course seem quite accurate to me. Short course (only 2 sets of tees), but the layout is challenging. Water plays into most holes and very few holes are straight. Greens are small with some tricky pin placements on the day we played. For the time of year, I was pleased with the overall conditions. One other review that I saw mentioned the poor cart path conditions, which was absolutely true. The asphalt path in many spots felt a lot like our current Michigan roads!! Eventually I just started driving on the side of them because it was so bumpy.
Pace of play was pretty slow, but the frost delay to start was a factor in that.
Cart paths aside, still avoid value for the price we paid (which wasn’t even a hot deal).
Great for the price
Got on for a hot deal and was very pleased. The course is in great condition considering it's still early spring, especially considering the weather we've been having. In years past there has been major drainage issues on a few holes but it looks like they're getting that figured out. Overall very pleased with the course
Bruce hills
Short tough course. Small greens. Well maintained and great people
great value for the money
play this course at least a few times a year. Fair amount of challenge with varying hole length and locations. Important to keep the ball below the hole, as some holes are cut right against a slope. Theres also hazards all around that test all aspects of ball striking. Course is always well maintained and staff is friendly enough.
Shhhh... Don't Tell Anyone About Bruce Hills
I'm hesitant to leave a good review for Bruce Hills, not because they don't deserve it, but simply because I don't want to it to become too crowded. Such an awesome course for the money... not terribly difficult, but lots of challenges throughout... the greens can be particularly brutal, depending on the pin placement and speeds. And being a little "off the beaten path" makes it easy to get a tee-time or even just walk-on. So definitely add Bruce Hills to your list of great local courses... just don't tell anyone else. ;-)
Disappointed
First off, I was hoping for a "hidden gem" tucked away in the woods like nearby Heather Hills.
This place was not that. I am a bit disappointed in you guys, these reviews made it sound like decent place. The quirky layout felt cramped and weird. The first hole is a 3 wood to reach the par 4 so already there is unease at the tee box with groups of T-shirt and Jorts types telling me to hit. Most of the front 9 is blind tee shots to layup to water, followed by blind approach shots. You can usually tell where to hit, but can't see the ball land. This is okay on a few holes...but it becomes excessive here. It's especially frustrating to find collection areas in low spots where 2 or 3 holes converge and there's carts everywhere with people looking for their ball which they couldn't see land from the tee.
But some people like that type of tricky layout and with only ~5,700 yards to work with, I guess they needed to make it more challenging. It's not easy despite the low slope/yardage.
The conditions were terrible. Greens were bumpy and soft, "fairways" were worn and inconsistent. Lots of overgrown and unkept areas that make the course look messy. I'll never understand that. Why? Just get a wee whacked and tidy up a bit.
Every bridge or railing was falling apart, every cart path was basically just a collection of broken concrete.
But by far the worst thing is the tee boxes. They all looked like the morning after at a college frat house. Just divots, broken tees, unkept grass and very uneven.
I guess for $35 on a Saturday morning I shouldn't have expected much, but all the reviews on here make it sound like a nice course. It's not. It's a place to play your golf league and drink beers.
Hamburger at the turn was great! Also, the beverage cart came to us every 3rd hole which was awesome!
Bumpy course & not so great of a staff...
Our foursome (consisting of men and women) are all avid golfers and have played many high end courses as well as bottom of the barrel courses for many years. This course looks nice upon first glance and was groomed alright (especially after the rain we had the entire week before). The layout was set up nicely, but we did encounter many issues with the staff. They were unfriendly, not very helpful, acting as if we were in their way the entire day, starting with them being annoyed as we walked in to register for our tee-time, again when picking up carts & loading clubs onto carts. Very impatient, sighing loudly as the path for getting the carts and loading clubs was very narrow & congested and they had to wait a second while we pulled our carts out and around They all were unfriendly, never a smile or friendly gesture from anyone there. Lawn cutting slowed down our play as we had to wait for them to finish cutting. The guy actually made us wait to finish out the hole as we were in the middle of play and he ran over my ball with the mower! Another worker rode up on us and sat directly in front of where we were hitting for awhile just watching us smoking a cigarette, then when we asked what he was doing, stated he had to turn on the sprinklers, again acting annoyed that we were in his way. It had just rained for several days in a row so running sprinklers at that time was not necessary. The course was 'extremely bumpy' riding along!!! All of the carts screeched very loudly when starting up each time and was loudly heard from all over the course, & some of the other players on the course (grown men) drove around with music playing loudly from their cart. When asking for coffee or a caffeine drink, the counter staff looked at the 3 empty pots and said no that she had just got there & offered a monster energy drink instead. There were hardly any bathrooms on the course & the placement of the ones they did have were in terrible locations. We definitely will not be coming back here as it was not an enjoyable experience at all. We would rather pay more money at a better course with friendlier staff than deal with this.
A good short course, for a great price!
I've played here many, many times. Its a great course with an up north feel. Staff is always nice and course is kept up. Usually pretty busy but like I said, I usually find a great price, so it's understandable. It is a pretty short course. You think you can drive the 1st and 10th holes but there is always trouble to add a nice challenge. Will be back!
Poor way to run a course
Started with rude cashier second hole ran into a 5 some later to see a 6 some holes 5-7 had sprinklers on the green put a outing out back in front of us 5 hour round if this is how vargo runs all there courses we won't be back
Water????
I've golfed here for years. They have improved the whole course. The fairways are watered and cut every morning. The rough is fair. The only problem is a very very big problem. They provide NO WATER on the course. Yes, we brought our own bottles but due to the fact it was very hot and humid that day-we had planned on refilling them on the course.
To our surprise-there was no water available. The little house holders for the containers were there but there was no containers. I just don't understand this! What happened?
Due to that oversight on the owners part, I would NOT recommend Bruce Hills during this summer. No way unless you are willing to succumb to heat stroke or a heart attack.
This is a serious concern!
Not
Big tree in middle of fairway , scramble heading out on same nine I'm teeing off on ?? Did not complete round another group started on hole 7 then jumped around waited on them twice and this is before 8 a.m Cart path needs work to say the least . Would not recommend will not be back
Again David like i stated in your previous comment, You teed off at 648 on #1 made the turn around 745-800am . My league shotguns(forward) 15, 16, 17, 18 and 1 at 815am. So there is no way that you waited for them on every hole on your back 9. Again the group starting on #15 early in morning are members and know if they want to play 18 holes on Thursday Mornings they will have to start there. The tree adds character to hole #1 with it being so short in my opinion. Yes we know that the cart paths need work and is on our hit list before next spring. Hope you enjoy your summer
Decent course, good for money
Good course, short by challenging
Very uneven tee boxes, overall decent condition
No cart girl, never understand that. Pace was tight but overall not bad, finished in 4.5 hours
Waste of time
Early a.m tee time / allowed first group to skip through corse or play several holes a few times not in any order . making the turn scramble going out on back first while other foursomes were already out .left course without completing the round back up beyond ridiculous (especially after noticing the front nine was completely open. Won't return and do not recommend
David We are sorry you experienced your time at Bruce Hills. We did not have a scramble out there on the day you are speaking. We do have a league that shotguns at 815 starting holes 15-1 which shouldn't affect you at all teeing off at 700am. The group that played first starting out on hole #15 were members of ours and know of our league start time and shotgunning. So they every Thursday morning do this. Sorry for your experience here at Bruce Hills and would recommend not playing on Thursday mornings here as a single. Enjoy your summer
In response to management's response to my comments regarding lack of water on the course. The "scares" re: water issues ...MI"
I've heard this from 1 other course. One! Every course I have played has their water jugs locked and chained down. No problem. Only course management with a key can access it. Seems like an easy approach to water safety.
Well sir we do appreciate the kind words about the course. Though with all recent water scares in and around Michigan we have decided not to put jugs of water out at BH anymore. We do apologize for the Inconvenience for you. We hope to see you soon
