Great layout...fair condition but better
Found on GolfNow for $22 at 3:15 with cart. Actually walked 18 (there are hills but it's very walkable due to no long walks between tees) as a single and finished in user 3 hours. It was very uncrowded but a part of this may have been the US World Cup game.
The condition of this course has never been known to be good and it still is not but I find it playable other than the bunkers. The fairways are in decent shape and overall the greens run well and only noticed a rough spot or 2.
The layout is really very good and is a stout test from the rear blue tees. I'm not a fan of OB being so close on some holes (and think hole 11 is a poor hole) but nothing seems gimmicky. There is a nice mix of par 5's, long and short par 4's (must start with a good drive on 1 or 10) and all the Par 3's play downhill.
Good deal
Its a good course. Staff is always nice and helpful. I always have a good time when I play at Normandie
Historic course shows maturity
Normandie lived up to my expectations as a course built accorind to the natural terrain and fully utilizing mature trees, varying topography, etc. The greens were in excellent shape. The only disappointment was the sand traps were not well maintained.
Great greens.....free soda refills!
Always a fast round here for me but I usually play at weird hours when most are at work or have just finished their morning round.
The design is great. Challenging and very rewarding when you pull off a great shot or two.
Tee boxes are hard and sparse
Fairways are so so with a lot of sparse areas but you can still tell it's fairway
Greens are awesome....not one flat putt to be found, they're consistent, and in great shape
Lots of bunkers but 95% are horrible. Bad drainage an they're essentially mud/dirt/gravel.
Overall it's a little rough but super playable. You get more than your money's worth. If it cost twice as much and the conditions were better it would be worth it but I wouldn't play it as often as I do because I'm cheap...lol!
Staff are friendly in my opinion, they stay out I my way and I stay out I theirs. Don't expect to be brown nosed but do expect to be treated with the same respect given.
don't waste your time.
Tee boxes had bare spots and long shoots of tall grass in other places. Many greens looked like they were mowed with a fairway tractor. Mowed in a circle pattern with tire tracks running all around the green.
Price made to pay was more than price indicated when booked on golfnow.com.
Not a good day, many other nicer courses in Stl area. Go play them!!!!
Normandie 6-11-2014
Greens were the best I have ever seen at this course. Conditions were very wet because of all of the recent rain which made the course play very long. The hole yardage on the card is not very accurate and there are no yardage makers on the par 3's. Overall a great experience. Enjoyed our round of golf.
Normandie needs attention
Two five-somes in front of us. Very slow. For June, the course is in horrid condition. Never see course Marshall's, really needed. Guys in front of us regularly hitting two balls off many tees.
Best I have ever seen
I played a few years ago and said I would never come back, the course was in horrible shape. A friend wanted to play there last year and I could see a major improvement, so I played there a few more times. Went for the first time this year and was really impressed with the improvement. Greens were stable and in good shape. I can't think of a better value close to me
My return to Normandie
Last time I played Normandie was in the bad old days when previous management let the place go to heck. I couldn't even find my way around because there were no tee signs.
This time the experience was different. Fairways and greens were in nice shape. Some approaches and fringes need evening and filling in since you will be using your wedge a lot. Long par fours were tough and greens were rolling and quick. I was in over my head but had a great time and look forward to revenge.
Historic Course / Poorly Maintained
Normandie has tremendous significance in St. Louis golf history, since it was designed by the Foulis brothers, who were understudies to Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews. It's a very challenging track, especially from the back tees, and it is one of the few remaining courses that retains almost all of its original charm and character. Its design is a marriage of original site and topography to shot makers' imaginations, not an abstract dream wrought by an architect's ego.
That said, it appears Walters Golf Management has decided to spend less than the minimum maintenance dollars on this old jewel. It's in very poor condition, especially considering I played it a day after its biggest amateur event of the year. I was hoping my timing would present Normandie's best maintenance, but no such luck. The fairways were splotchy and had not been mown (lots of grass clumps popping up amidst the zoysia); everything was littered with branches and natural debris remaining from a rough winter; and what budget there is must have been used on white paint to mark "g.u.r." for the tournament.
Amazingly, the greens are quite decent -- by far the best feature, in terms of condition. That gives me hope that the rest of the course could be groomed, cleaned, and made more playable.
Must mention that the gentleman who runs the weary, old pro shop is terrific. He does all he can to cater to die hard golf addicts like me.
Walters needs to spend a little money to make this a viable venue, not just a stroll down memory lane.
Slow play and not very good condition
It was disappointing when we got to the course and discovered there was a tournament teeing off right in front of us. It took 5 1/2 to play 18 holes. We had to wait to hit onever shot. Very poor scheduling on their part. Fairways were very thin. Greens were nice.
Bunkers were unplayable.
Average Conditions, Super Slow Play
Was only able to get in 9 holes by dark and started at 4:40. They did not let us start on the back nine, and there were 5 groups of 4 teeing off back to back. Played 9 holes in 3 hours. Payed $26 for 18, and was not offered a coupon for a free nine, which I felt I should have as I only played 9 and payed for 18. I will not be back, even if it was free. I am not trying to spend 6 hours on a fair golf course and only play 18 holes. I would not recommend this course to anyone, unless you have a whole day free to just golf.
The Greens are in very good condition
I will definitely play this course in. The fairway grass is beginning to come in.
The course has tricky green.
Overall this course is in good condition. It has great long par five. It worth for the trip and the money.
Value ?
I booked the 6:33am tee time ( 2 some) in order to be 1st on course and play a fast rd. That was working until we hit back 9 and a older gentleman with a push car playing the front tee boxes wouldn't let us thru and maintained a pace to be in the fairway on each hole or on the green on par 3's to prevent us from hitting. Once we finished on 18 I went and asked if she sent anyone off the back 9 and she said "no". I explained the gentleman ahead of use and she said "that must be the owner" with no apologies . I don't believe that was the owner sense Walters owns Normandie. Overall it was a frustrating rd of golf for the back 9. Greens were in very good shape. Will play again however I hope the desire for professionalism increases or I will take business elsewhere.
Good course with great Staff!!!
Could do some improvement on the pace of play. Almost 3 hours to play 9 holes was not what I planned.
Great experience.
The staff was very courteous and friendly.
It was a pleasant experience for a first timer.
Wish you all the Lu ck.

Honor the Heritage of Robert Foulis
The oldest public golf course west of the Mississippi. I am honored to play at this course that also happens to be a great bargain. You owe it to yourself to play Normandie Golf Club at least once.
Needs some TLC
The fairways are zoysia that is still dormant. You were better off in the rough then the fairway. May will bring the grass back and make it better. Tee boxes were rough and un kept. The sand pits were awful, they all need new sand. The greens were in decent shape and rolled good. Many were extremely challenging.
Its better in summer months when the zoysia takes over but they skimp hard on grounds keeping. You can catch some good deals on Golfnow so we use it as a fall back course because of the convenient location. I will wait till May to try it again.
